I'm gonna try the cake stand idea too. I saw one in the store, was looking at buying it and then remembered I've seen the instructions on DIY and they don't look that hard to do. I've decorated glass plates before, with decoupage and napkins, maybe I'll try that for the stand (or find wooden ones at Mike's). Thanks for the etsy site on ideas and good luck on the surgery.
WOW, I've made it to pg 75. At the rate I'm going, another week and I will have read the whole thread.
Hobby Lobby has a lot of scrap booking stuff on sale for 50% Off. I spent a fortune. I got a 1" circle scallop punch, a 3/4 in circle punch, a rectangular punch and one that punches two holes so I could put a paper clip bookmark on a cute little card. I got a few colors of card stock and a bunch of patterned paper
For tile coasters I got two background stamps (words and music) a cowboy boot stamp and a fish stamp. I ordered some stazon pads on ebay but they didn't have black so got one at Hobby Lobby. Might have been for nothing though because I went to Home Depot and the tiles were all packaged in plastic and most of them looked pitted.
I ended up getting a lot of stuff but all I really started with was a few stamps (one can only sell so much butterfly, cat and frog stuff) and part of a pack of scrap book paper. I wish I had $ to get more stamps. I am going to get a sunflower (KS state flower) if I can find decent tiles If I can figure out how to make dog treats into fry shapes I'm going to put them in fry boxes and call them Puppy fries. While I was looking for chip board at Home Depot I picked up a few paint chips. I thought I could punch shapes out of them.
I found out I'm having another surgery in two weeks. making my self pretend I feel well enough to craft is going to be a challenge.
I have an idea for something that could be used for desplay. take a vintage plate and use it to make a cake stand. A glass candle holder, vase, glass or desert dish could be used as the base. Some examples:
You have lots of great ideas girl... I think the puppy fries would be a great seller~ get busy and keep your mind off surgery. I want to see these when you put them together!

Bronzfrog, sounds like you found some great deals at Hobby Lobby. The closest Hobby Lobby, Michael's and Joanns stores are about 40 minutes away from me, which is the only thing that saves our budget because I love those stores. Cute idea with the puppy fries - can't wait to see what you come up with for those! Good luck with your surgery, I'm sure everything will go fine.
I'm about the same distance from the craft stores. We can't even get fabric here now.
I'm beginning to wonder if I got a big enough scallop punch. What size is everyone using for their paperclip bookmarks?

you can place a plate on top of a wine glass. or a dessert cup.
hi everyone - this thread is starting to get busy again - gearing up for the summer shows on Cape Cod - need the best glue to fix paper to metal (not E6000) - it's not a big area to cover, but it needs to stick well - looking for maybe a glue stick or liquid glue as the whole (small) surface needs coverage
thanks in advance, carole

Would ModPodge do it for you?
Congrats on your impending retirement. I retired last January; it's been great!

Can you use a spray adhesive? I like using that stuff (although its stinky) because it just covers so well, no bubbles and it sticks.

My absolute favorite glue that I use for most everything because it holds awesome is Zip Dry. You can get it at Michaels. It dries clear and fast. It really works on everything. I use it a lot for my altered address books for adhering the embellishments. I hope that helps
thank you all - a couple of those I've never heard of - need to buy the 'zip dry' and 'tombow' - best of all, one of the stamp/paper shows is this weekend in west springfield MA, so I'm sure I'll be able to find those glues (plus about 100 other items I need!!) - if you live in new england, you might want to consider going to this show...
again, thanks - carole

Hey crafty friends, I need some advice, please!! I am making marble and travertine tile coasters for upcoming craft fairs and I am wondering if I should color in the images or leave them black and white? Two sets are the Gem Stone Birds by Inkadinkado and would involve quite a bit of coloring, unless I just did the large spaces and not every dot/white space. I don't want to ruin them by doing too much, but I don't want them to look too plain either... dilemma! Anyway, if you get a chance to look at them, here are the links to the coasters.

Please feel free to give your honest opinion because I want my things to SELL!
Thanks!
Katie
Hi Katie
From experience- I colored a few of my tile sets it took A LONG TIME and no one bought them. The images that were only stamped with ink (black stazon) flew off the table. I am not saying that yours wouldnt sell because every area is different. I love your tiles they are very cool!

I sold quite a few of the "plain" (black or brown) ones, too. I had just a few colored ones (some pumpkins and a nativity lamb where I just colored the star yellow), but the plain ones sold the best.

Your coasters are lovely, where did you get them? The ones I have always gotten are tumbled tiles and have a more worn look. Had left very few that were not colored and these were all a big seller, depending on the year what sold most. Always my football and nature theme ones sold well.
WOW! I have been using my ATG tape gun for these for months now and have had no issues....and I have probably made about 150 of these! I do make kind of a small grid pattern all over it though.....maybe I am using too much adhesive, but I wanted to be safe.
My daughter still has the first one I made (she is always my "guinea pig") and it's still fine!
Maybe the weather where you are? Or the type of tape gun?
Yeah it's been really humid here :( Yeah I'm thinking I need to finally invest in the ATG tape gun. My heavier PP is fine. It's just the thinner PP that is doing this :(

Thanks so much for the input everyone. I am glad that the uncolored tile coasters sold the best so I do not have to worry about coloring them! I have a few flower sets that I will color, but the large images I will leave plain. Maybe the plain sell better because they match all decor and you don't have to worry about the red clashing with a red couch, especially if it is a gift, KWIM?
What stamps did you use on the tile coasters that sold the best?
The last craft show I did (which was in November of 2006) the coasters that sold the best were SU Frosty, SU Paint Prints, also tiles stamped with misc scripture verse stamps from Hobby Lobby, and friend, teacher, coffee themed coasters sold well too. HTH!

Hi Barbiejo, I get my tiles at Lowes and Home Depot. In my pics, the Bliss Bird is stamped on a Chiaro tumbled marble tile from Home Depot and the Faith Hope Love Bird and Lighthouse are stamped on travertine tiles from Lowes. I think I lucked up on a good batch of marble tiles a couple months ago because I just looked for more marble tiles at Lowes last week and they were all gnarly and pitted and there is no way I could get a clean stamped image on them. I guess the remaining coasters I make I will have to use the travertine or hope that Home Depot still has some non-gnarly marble ones! lol
Oh, sorry, I forgot to mention that I usually have to search through about 10 boxes of tiles in order to buy 3 boxes of tiles that are suitable for stamping. The clerks sometimes give me the stink eye, but I make sure I put them all back neatly in boxes of nine so I do not see what the big deal is. I am the customer and I am picky and can't afford to waste $$$ on tiles I can't use!
I am thinking on getting back into a show or two, I know this thread is about "what sells best" but is there a dated list so it is easy to find at a glance what has been selling and where. Example:
5/10 Houston, TX - 6pk note cards, note holders, things priced between x and x.
And then the next person would add to this list/post. How do you start a list like this?
Thanks, I was thinking on the lines of an updated post with a list in one post, but, not thingking about doing that way. I will start one. Thanks again.
@sea777 - you also might suggest that crafters write down their opinion of the show...good location w/parking, helpful and available show workers/volunteers, good advertising (very important) and whether you would do show again...this would be very helpful to all of us considering doing a show near us or traveling a distance...just a thought

Great idea! And be sure to list the link here when you get it started.
Hi all, I started a new thread for a list format of craft show best sellers. You can find it here: Forums at Splitcoaststampers
All the info on the list is there. It has been suggested to also list if you like the venue and would you do that show again. So if you would like to include that also, it would be helpful. Looking forward to seeing what's hot this year!

Sonya,
I added my experience. I can't wait to hear from everyone else!
Thanks, everyone, for the nice compliments! I have been gathering supplies for a long time and planning what to make, but I am starting to freak out a little bit because the other day I realized that my first show will be here before I know it and I do not have much stock made yet. The trouble is, I have no idea what is going to sell and the first show is on August 28, so I don't know if people will be thinking about buying Christmas gifts yet or should I mainly bring non-Christmas stuff???
Those are awesome! You have been very busy! Would love to know how you made the Jr. Legal Pads with the RSVP pens!
Hi Beth,
Thanks, yes, I have been busy lately...mainly when the baby is asleep! For the Jr. legal pad with RSVP pen holder, I sort of combined the concept of the mini gel pen post-it note holder with the Jr. legal pad with inside flap. I thought the pen holder might be a better seller. It is still sort of a work in progress, but I will try to get the dimensions together and post them for you when I can.
I have figured up my approximate cost to make my items and below is what I was thinking about charging. Please let me know if you think any prices are unreasonable. Thanks!
Marble Tile Coasters $4.00 each or 4 for $15.00 6x6 Marble Tile Trivet $5.00 Composition Book Journals $5.00 Jr. Legal Pad w/RSVP Pen Holder $5.00 Magnetic Frame with Post-It & Mini Gel Pel $5.00 Top-Note Style Gift Card Holder $2.00 Tic Tac Box $2.00
