I was thinking that the taping off the edge was a great, idea not one I'd thought to do but then I thought, hey not as big ................. questions are a good thing! LOL
Hmmmm maybe it it just depends on where the roller is situated on the machine for the mat to go through, but still saying that you'd have to watch the size of your actual letters shapes etc of that extra half inch?
A while back I cleaned my four mats (also bought the 12 x 24 and cut them in half), then sprayed on adhesive (3M Repositionable Adhesive). The first time I did this I didn't think about the edges and it really gunked up the rollers. But I do learn from my mistakes. The next time resprayed my mats, I used a repositionalble double sided tape runner (like on a post-it note) and attached a strip of paper on the sides before I sprayed. That was easy enough to take off once the adhesive dried on the mat. I guess masking tape would work too - so long as you took it off right away.

SCAL (and the other option, Make the Cut) is a program that works with your computer and Cricut to cut. You must have a cartridge (ANY cartridge) in the Cricut for the Cricut to cut.
You can search for Sure Cuts A Lot or Make the Cut to get more information on these programs.
Oh, I see, so you really are not cutting from THAT cartridge? I've heard of Sure Cuts A Lot but not Make the Cut, thanks.
Exactly. You can ONLY use Cricut Design Studio on the computer to cut using cartridges, but you can use SCAL or MTC to cut WITHOUT a specific cartridge. You cannot cut the cartridge images, though.
Just bought a Cricut and SCAL and am wondering if anyone can point me to a website that has downloadable versions Sizzix, etc.? I'd like to start building my library of cut files with some of the basics like scallop circles, and other shapes.

Sorry. I have no idea ....I just make my own by using pictures off of the internet or that I make myself. I don't know a site to find these.
I have - and LOVE - SCAL. I haven't tried MTC. My suggestion is to download the trial versions of both and determine which one you prefer to work with. I've had SCAL for almost 2 years and rarely use my Cricut without it.

You can find TONS of free cut files and fonts online. Craftedge.com is the usually the first place I look, but if you just google SCAL FREE cuts you will find many more. My son recently had to do a science fair project and I didn't have the cart for an image he needed. I just went to craftedge.com and did a search for it and fond it for FREE!! Some images are for a small fee. I still love my carts espicially for copyrighted images but I LOVE SCAL and will never buy another font cartridge!
Thanks, Laurie. I have found a ton of free sites, that hasn't been a problem! ;) But I am wanting to use my Cricut to make some of the shapes from Sizzix without having to buy the dies.

Thanks, think I will take your suggestion and try the trial version first. thanks again.
PS: Do you like to write/journal? I was put on to this site by a fellow crafter, Angela/Griperang in another swap.

Love the SCAL version, will buy it! Thanks again, now just have to learn the ins and outs of the program!

Shell - how do you use pictures from the web?
Sorry ... Missed this when you posted it. You copy the picture fromtbe web (copy, print screen, or whatever it takes for that picture), convert it to a .jpg file using a graphics program (I use paint shop pro, but gimp is a free one you can get online), and import it to SCAL. Works wonderfully!!!!
Is there a problem with SCAL when PC updates the software/firmware for Design Studio? I know in the past that it has caused problems, but I think those have been resolved. Is this correct? Thanks.
heres my first cricut project, a simple covered notebook!
the font and swirl are from Don Juan, and "Maude" is from Sentimentles
the paper is CTMH, a retired pack

PC has blocked SCAL various times in the past, but not lately. At the moment, I simply update the font packs on the CDS and NOT the software itself. The font packs don't affect SCAL at all. When PC does block SCAL, the creator of SCAL does a work-around for us.

Thanks, Shell. That's what I thought. So if I'm current on all the software/hardware, I'll still be OK with SCAL, right?
