Altered Pop Top Can

by Julie Buhler

Alter a pop top can container and fill it with goodies. It makes a great gift container for small gifts or candy.

Supplies

  • Pop Top Can
  • Safety Can Opener
  • Coluzzle™
  • Patterned Paper
  • Scissors
  • Sticky Strip™
  • Candy or other filling
  • Crystal Effects or other STRONG glue

Step-by-Step

  1. Step 1

Open the can AT THE BOTTOM with a safety can opener. Drain contents and wash container.

  2. Step 2

Apply Sticky Strip™ at the seam of the can.

  3. Step 3

Cut patterned paper tall enough to cover the area between the top and bottom of the tin, and long enough to wrap around the can, leaving a slight overlap.

Adhere over the Sticky Strip™ and add more Sticky Strip™ to the end of the paper. Remove the red liner, then wrap the paper around the and adhere.

  4. Step 4

Measure the top of the can with a Coluzzle™ template. Only measure the metal area that is going to pop out when the can is opened.

  5. Step 5

    Cut circle to fit.

  6. Step 6

Slide paper under the tab to get an idea of how much will need to be cut off.

  7. Step 7

Use your scissor to cut off a side of the circle. There is no set amount, but start with a little and keep trimming until it fits.

  8. Step 8

Using Sticky Strip™, adhere paper circle to the lid of the can.

  9. Step 9

Now, fill the can. Turn it upside down and add desired contents. If adding food items, put them in a baggie. This way, the glue used to close the container will not touch the food.

  10. Step 10

Apply a thin strip of Crystal Effects™ (or other STONG glue) all the way around the outer rim of the cut out bottom.

  11. Step 11

Press the bottom back on, wiping away excess glue with a tissue.

Leave can upside down and weigh down a heavy object on top until the glue has dried for a few hours or overnight.

    When dry, embellish as desired!!

  12. Step 12

    Finish decorating your can.

Variations

Use a can without the pop top.

Great idea! and SOOO cute, too. I think it is so neat to have another way (and reason) to use my safety can-opener and my used cans. Now I need to make something today that will use the contents of one of my pop-top cans. smile

Wow!! My mind is racing with possibilities. Here is one that I got while reading the previous feedbacks... Someone mentioned this would be a great way to give a $$ gift. I thought it would be cute if you decorate the can as if it was "Play Dough" inside ... wouldn't they be surprised when they saw money?? lol I want to try cutting off the top of my Fancy Feast cat food tins and gluing them back on an empty can first. If this works, it will be a great way to package up non-food gift items. Someone posted about golf tees and a golf ball. That wouldn't fit in the cat food tin, but other small toys would for kids. As I said, my mind is racing! LOL

I love making these!!! They are real hit at Christmas time. I also made some for Halloween. And...for football season. My daughter had 2 players she adopted every week and gave them goodies. We made them these cans with a note attached that read..."Go Mavs...you CAN do it!" They loved them!

Julie: I think this will be a good project for my clients to do for valentine's day. Is there anything I can use to reattach can bottom that is less costly than crystal effects? Thanks for the tutorial. Is is very clear.

I have tried this...but could not get the "smell" out of the can even after washing it 2 or 3 times...what is the trick for a "non-smelling" can?
Monianne  |  Wed Feb 18, 2009 at 1:52 PM
Have you tried just letting it air out for a few days? Or maybe washing it with a little bit of bleach in the water?
L. Ann  |  Wed Feb 18, 2009 at 2:16 PM
Tried the airing out..but not the bleach; I'll give that go and see what happens..thanks for the suggestion L. Ann ( :

Not sure what was in your can but I have made several of these and no smell at all. I wahed mine in the dishwasher first and let dry over night. I use hot glue to glue the bottom back on instead of the crystal effects and it works just fine. Can be a little messy if not careful though.

Julie, I uploaded a photo of my pop-top cans, but I'm not sure where they went in our cyber space folder. It was of two cans, one wrapped in blue Christmas paper with a clear blue ornament attached & the other was in wrapped in cream/red Christmas paper and an ornament attached. Would you please reassure me that they arrived in this gallery? Thank you in advance

This is such an awesome idea! I am amazed at the things people come up with that put my hands on, on a daily basis and would never have thought "geez I can alter this". Thanks for the great ideas!!!
