I have a bunch of loose ribbon (not on and spools or whatever those things are called).
Any ideas for storing it? I've seen something that looked like the old fashioned clothes pins that someone wrapped their ribbon around (do they then secure it with a pin?). Other than that - I've only seen people wrap it around embroidery floss holders.
Any other idea?

If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.
I put mine in a BIG OLD jar that my mom gave me! It used to be a cookie jar, I think - it's clear so I just throw my scraps in and pick thru when I need something!
I also saw the large ribbon cards (~5x7?) that Cropper Hopper sells for people to wind their ribbon around. Myself, I'd rather have stamps than storage supplies when possible, and was too lazy to cut into my sheet of foam core board, so I am using the stronger chipboard that comes on some of my groceries. I've just started winding ribbon on the cards by colour today, and holy COW do I have a LOT of red ribbon!!!!
You can use a round container from bread crumbs or oatmeal. Punch holes in the cover. Thread your ribbons through the holes and put the rest inside the container. You can decorate it.
I've given a crafting friend a gift of one I made with pieces of ribbon from my spools.
I have mine stuffed into a large glass appocathery jar.
Someday I will go through all that ribbon and organize it and someday hubby will pick up after himself to lol

This is what I did too (great minds think a like). Just took some odd chipboard that came with paper I bought, cut it into strips, wrapped the ribbon/fibers, and pinned with a straight pin. I do worry about it getting permanent creases so I tried to wrap loose but that caused some of it to want to fall off the chipboard.
And I see the blogger on that site is also looking for ideas to use up her stash! I just posted that question yesterday. Whew, not the only one.

Ditto..I actually got my jars from Michaels for $1 the large mason jars works perfectly for me too beause I can see it. I have my ribbon sorted in the jars by solid or patterned and then grosgrain or organdy and then anything over 1" wide in it's own jar!! HTH good luck!
Forgot to mention this. Before I wound it all onto the chipboard I had it still on the spool and in plastic containers that are meant to put Christmas ribbon in. The spool sits on a rod and you stick the tail through an opening to pull it out. Got annoying because the ribbon would not always pull out smoothly plus since it was made for ribbon about 1.5" wide the smaller ones would tangle up when i tried to put to many tails through the opening.
Before this I tried to make my own using those photo boxes that look like shoe boxes. Same concept as the plastic ones just a lot of work and then I had the same problems of not pulling smoothly & tangles.
My first storage "system" (I'm always looking for a better way ) was embroidery floss holders and then I put them onto key rings and hung them on the wall. Made my own out of chipboard for the larger stuff. This worked great until my stash grew and I realized some of it was fading from light exposure.

Kinda relieved to find others here doing the bargain method of storage; there are so many appealing ways to store things sometimes I feel a little cheap using my bright orange Silk duo pack boxes. The foam core board storage on the blog link is pretty, but I thought the board would take up way more space than chipboard. Me and pins don't get along (I'm forever dropping stuff on the floor, and can't see very well to be sure to pick everything back up again) so I just cut slits about 1 cm long in my chipboard for each end to tuck into.
I always kept my ribbon on the rolls stored in drawers before because I was worried about creases and did NOT want to dig out my iron to make cards. But, I picked up a Pebbles ribbon iron for nine bucks and now don't tremble in fear at creased ribbon or water-distressing my papers.
(Thought I should mention that some ingenious folks use their curling irons to get the creases out of the ribbon. I have a curling iron but have been burned about a thousand times too many with them to be comfortable having one out on my craft table.)
I got "cracker jars" from Target. I color code the different jars, and I can see inside them so easily! See my gallery, behind some of my cards to see what I mean...
im a total ribbon addict i just can not get enough of it.
Even if i buy a spool of it i cut 3 yards off and wind it around my fingers then secure it with one of thoose tiny rubber pony tail holders. They were like $4 for 500 at walmart.
i then place them in giant cracker jars. I found mine at the dollar store but ikea, Target and HL all carry similar ones.
I originally put them on clothes pins but that wasted too much space. Then I just put them in the jars loose but they kept getting tangled.
This way when i go to crops i just dump the whole jar into a 2 gallon ziplock bag and take it with me
I have 8 jars from Target and just stick ribbon in them by color. It's easy to see what I have and just dig through to get what I need. Plus, it's just so darn pretty sitting on the shelf over my desk!
I have tried several ways to store my ribbon and finally found something I like. I have wire shelving in my craft area so I bought S hooks and hung them along the side of the top wire shelf. Then I grouped like colors together and clipped them into a bulldog clip and hung the bulldog clip from the S hook. Not only do they look pretty, they are easy to take down and use with removing the ribbon from the bulldog clip.

I've been using The insert for the CD cases to wrap my loose ribbon around.
And those cute little bobbin ribbons I store in a Plastic jar from Wally world.
this is an old thread! I'll share my quirky way -- I wrap ribbons around the empty toilet-paper rolls. Depending on how wide the ribbon is, sometimes I can get 4 different ribbons on one roll. Usually 3 though. I tape the ends together. And then I throw all the rolls into a plastic bag.
And of course this is a great way to recycle!
