Would it be so hard to make a paper cutter that measures to 5.5 inches wide without having to extend the arm of the base? I don't know who uses cutters besides paper crafters, so I think they could make this little change for those of who make cards.
Tonic makes a slider cutter that has a 6 inch base!
IMO, it's far better than any of the slider cutters I've had from Fiskars. In fact I'll go so far as to say I HATE Fiskars slider cutters. I find the ruler warps when you push down thus making it hard to get a straight line.
I'm much happier with my Tonic slider. Oh and it even has grids every 1/4" over the whole face of the cutter....no more guessing at the 1/4" marks like I used to on the Fiskars.
I agree with all the above comments. Marvy Uchida also has a paper cutter that the 5.5 mark is just at the hinge also. (I only use this paper cutter with the decorative blades) I use my Fiskar when I am not at home since it is more portable than my Tonic. Just for minor cuts like just trimming a bit off and even then it's frustrating. I have a 12" Tonic on my worktable that is my 'workhorse'.
I think I am like others here that have various paper cutters falling out of the closet - Fiskars, Carl, Cutterpede. I have a Dahle that is heavy duty but it doesn't have enough small measurement marks so it is still in the box. I know that some people can 'guesstimate' but I like my cuts to be uniform and precise.
I also agree wholheartedly! I have the CM 12" trimmer and I'm always afraid of breaking that arm off! So if I'm cutting alot of cards at once, I use my laser-guided full sized X-ACTO cutter - the only problem with it is that it is so big and takes up valuable work space on my desk.
how about the first fiskars slider cutter that had the measurement of 4 1/4 on the edge of the cutter. no numbers, no ruler, i had to tell my students "oh right, 4 1/4 is on the edge.."

I love my Fiskers cutter and think it's one of the most under used cutting tools (I remember when 4.25 was on the edge) and I'm all for extending the table to at least 6 so 5.5 won't be lost in the hinge.

Ladies, Fiskars DOES make a trimmer with a 6 inch base! I bought mine at JoAnn's when they were having a sale. Makes it really nice when I'm doing cards and the other thing I like about it is it has a cable (for want of a better word) down where the blade slides.
If I print something off on the printer with a straight line I want to cut I just line up the printed line under the cable and it's pretty much perfect.
I just got a reply from Fiskars that they can't ship to Canada. Would any members that know of a seller that carries this cutter and will ship to Canada please post a link.

Hey Fiskars .......and while you're at it how about making the plastic straight edge that holds the cutter sturdier so that it doesn't spread when you press down on the cutter which slightly throws off your measurement.....sure would love to buy that.....oh and another thing - how about making the measurements along the top easy to see. The numbers have worn off one of mine and on the other one the little ridges are really hard to see. That would be a cutter I would definitely buy.......

Hey AlbertaStamping, I've seen those in Michaels in Calgary.
i HATE this cutter. i have it upstairs and there it will sit forever... it comes with this WIRE in the cutting area that's supposed to show you where it's going to cut, but instead it got in the way of the blade and tore my paper.. i took the wire out... still tears my paper. i found a way to NOT get fuzzy edges and the only way is to pull the slider TOWARDS you, which is totally impractical in my opinion. i hate it.. because i threw the wire away i can't return it. stupid me..
i bought a Tonic guillotine and i love it. clean edges every time.

Thanks cat_woman, I don't live in a major city, but I do get to Edmonton once in a while, I'll be watching for it. And jazzytobi, I'll keep in mind the things you don't like. I'll let you know what I decide after I've had a look at it.

Yes pick me...I have so many and usually use the el cheapo guillotine I scored at a local stationers here.
i do not like the fact that the cut isn't a true straight with the fiskars...it did the warp dance...I am a tad **** about cutting just so, so it annoyed me to the max....in a corner not being used...and would not buy another.

Arg! Arg! Arg! How I *wish* the fiskars trimmer would cut cleanly, if so, I could even take 5.5 being on the arm. I just opened up my heavy-duty Carl and then put it back in the box because it was not fun trying to line up anything less than 3 1/2 inches, which is, um....yeah, pretty much all of my cuts.
Why can't they put ruler on the tonic guillotine somewhere even close to where my paper is? (And why can't they make the paper holder down thing sized for someone that does not have the hand span of Michael Jordan?)
Why can't they put 1/8 inch marks on the mini tonic?
Why can't fiskars make their mini guillotine base out of something stronger than the arm so the arm doesn't nick the base and then snag on it every time?
I mean, we put a man on the moon, right? Is it asking too much to be able to cut paper straight?
(As a side note, how does one get to be a "fiskateer"? And is there a song and/or hat involved?)
I SO agree. I do like my Fiskars triple track but it can be annoying to have to pull out that arm for every project. Especially when my desk is so cluttered that I don't have enough room to actually pull the arm out fully and I end up having to balance my cutter on my lap.
I also like it since there is a little catch for the clear guide bar so it doesn't flop around.
That looks neat but I hate the flowered design. It would be so distracting when cutting paper. Especially if the paper was a similar color to the design it was sitting on. Why can't they just make it plain grey like the old ones?
I like my Fiskars old purple rotary cutter, but it's going to be hard soon to get replacement parts for the darn thing. I wholeheartedly agree that it's SOOOO frustrating that we can't see all of the measurements!!!!!!! Nothing like having to guess at something.
I LOVE my X-Acto guillotine cutter, but it's just not practical to take anywhere, and it takes up valuable space on my table. But does it ever cut paper!

This is the one I have. I guess I didn't realize there were other Fiskars ones available. Hmmm.

This is sorta creepy. Do they just google their own name every week or so to see what we think? At least they want to help you out....

well I wonder if fiskers would trade in my old gray crooked cutter and my rotery one that is just a smidge off and I have taken to placing my paper crooked so when I cut and then score I have a perfect fold. it's so annoying to have a crooked fold:twisted:

if you don't talk to your cat about catnip who will?
It is a FULL 8 INCHES with out any fold outs... I have larger ones from when I scrapbooked a lot, but now 99% of what I do is cards so this one is wonderful. I will say that when if starts to tear or pull on your paper sometimes it just needs the cutting thingy turned to a new edge. That rubber thing in the base - you can use it 4 different times as new, then they sell replacements very inexpensive - that makes it cut like new for me most of the time.
There once was a dark and gloomy land where all the bad trimmers went to die. There were trimmers with broken paper holders, bent blades, the poor trimmers who's rulers had lost their ink markings, and oh, the sad, sad trimmers who no could buy replacement blades.
Trimmers that were banished to this land spent their days making bad cuts, and shredding paper. They were never allowed to go to another crop or workshop, their owners had given up all hope of ever finding the perfect trimmer.
But as bad as their days were, the most awful part of the nights because they were foced to watch the giant TV Screen in the sky for hours on end. The giant TV showed nothing but one shopping channel that carried only one product - THE PERFECT TRIMMER.
Oh how the bad trimmers wanted to by like THE PERFECT TRIMMER .. if only thier makers had been smarter they could have ...
A 6" platform with 1/4" grid markings
A strong arm that held the paper down
A blade that was so sharp that it could cut through light chipboard
It would be lightweight yet sturdy
The swing arm didn't have a paper stop that got in the way
And their blades would be self-sharpening
But alas, since they have none of the features of the Perfect Cutter, they will live their days in this dark and gloomy land until their owners free them to the land of goodwill, where maybe someone will take them home and use them for a little while until once again they will be banished to the land of bad cutters. The moral of the story - Once a bad cuter always a bad cutter.
As for me, I'll keep using my Tonic Trimmer as it has a 1/4" grid and let all my other 5 trimmers rest in the land of bad cutters. I guess perhaps I should send them to the land of good will....

Meg you had me ROFL!!!
I'm glad I looked at this thread; I thought it was just me and my cheap trimmer but now I know I'm not alone on this earth. Thanks to everybody my ever-extending-wishlist got a wee bit longer!
