I have finally decided to purchase the Copics. After looking at the price, I am coming to the experts, to see what the "must-have" colors are for a beginner. TIA.
Welcome to the "dark side!" LOL
My first question for you would be: what colors do you use most when you craft? Then, do you know how many markers you want to start with?
I just ordered some Copic's from The Merri Artist this morning. I went with mainly nature colors, as I have alot of stamps that are animals and flowers. I ordered colors that have the same first number and the last number is one or two numbers different from each other (hope that makes sense). I got some greens, blues, browns, yellows, reds, purples and pinks, I read alot of information on Marianne's blog I Like Markers and that is one thing that she suggested that you get markers that have the same first number and they are suppose to blend together better. Hope this helps you with your purchasing decision.
hhhhhmmmmmmmmmm.......I guess I want to stay pretty basic to begin, because I will buy a few to start and then begin to add to the collection. ROYGBP I suppose is the appropriate place to begin. ???? Sorry I don't know really the best way to answer this, what are your top 20 that you use the most?
I ordered ROYGBP in my first order and was disappointed. I could not do anything with them. I found that I needed to get 3 of a color- light, medium and dark in order to shade an object. If you like flowers, I would suggest you get 3 in a range of your favorite flower color and 3 greens for leaves/stems. Hope this helps.

I ordered ROYGBP in my first order and was disappointed. I could not do anything with them. I found that I needed to get 3 of a color- light, medium and dark in order to shade an object. I study Marianne's blog every day, picking one topic to read!! I went and printed up the color chart, and started to mark which markers I wanted and went from there...
I purchased my first markers at my LSS- and did not know or understand the color system. Now--- after reading Marianne's blog, I "think" I made an informed decision and picked up 12 more today-- specifically having the colors I thought I would use most often... blues, reds, skin colors, and the grays, because the grays are going to help me shade...
I did my first real coloring today, using some of the suggestions and was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked them!
I am a Copic beginner, and I only own THREE right now, but this is what I think you need to get you started:
A flesh tone, for example Skin White E00
A shadow tone, for outlining. I have Pale Blue Gray (not sure on the code)
A "grass" tone. I got Yellow Green, you might like something else.
Those are the three I have, but I would also suggest a "sky" tone. I've seen some great cards where there is just a little bit of a sky colored in around the image, it looks so COOL. Also a "ground" tone, like a light brown, that you could also use for hair.
Of course I'll want more, but I'm trying to restrain myself. LOL! I have all the SU markers so I also use them for coloring.
I can't live without a light tan, like Brick Beige or Chamois. Those are my faves for some reason, but I love my light pinks and my dusky greens, too. One bright one I reach for a lot is my Yellow, just called Yellow. I don't use bold colors much. Oh, also get a dusky blue.
I just started buying them and they all look like "must haves" to me...well all except for the grey toned ones. The colors are really neat and there are so darn many choices. ;)

I have over 50 of them and I am so all over the place on the colors... what is your style? do you color people most? get flesh and hair... flowers, petals and stems...birds... brown,blue and tan...hope that helps
I would make sure that you clearly understand the numbering system before ordering anything...this way you get colors that work well together and arecertain that you get colors that you can use for shading and layering color.
This list is soooo helpful to me- This is exactly what I need to get started on my copics. I did a search for copic markers in the forums and read through so many posts for hours and I just need a good list like this one so I can get started.
If you had a few more you think are must have's to add to the list above...please please add them here so I can make my master list and place my order
