Are you asking about heat embossing or dry embossing?

Are you using a special heat gun, or some other kind of heat tool? If you're damaging the paper, you must be holding the gun way too close!

One thing I did that seemed to help is to take a piece of cardboard (semi small, maybe 8 x 5 inches), and cover it with aluminum foil. I taped the foil onto the back side, so that it stays on there. Now when I emboss, I put the image on there and it heats the paper up much quicker and the embossing takes much less time. As soon as the area I am embossing is shiny and raised I move to a new area. I also tend to hold the gun tipped at a slight angle, rather then straight up and straight down, for some reason it works better for me that way. Try embossing with gold or silver first, it is the easiest color to see the change on. I tried with a clear emboss first and had *NO* idea of what I was looking for with regards to the change. Hope this helps!
