Well gals, I've been following this from the very beginning. I have knit for 40+ years and taught myself to crochet last summer. But for the life of me, I can't do it well. I probably have tried to make at least 30 flowers and have had only about 5 turn out well. I have one larger pattern (easy) and one smaller (easy). I am very slow and careful, but there is always something that goes wrong that I don't see until the very end. When I think of all the card making and scrapbooking I could have done while trying these, it really blows my mind! I keep trying though. Last night my daughter-in-law said her mother used to crochet and said maybe she'd do some for me if I asked.
Just to make you feel a little better....I crochet and have done it off and on for years. I am good with patterns, and also sew quite a bit.
I have tried I don't know how many times to knit. My dd knits and has been very patient with me. I just don't like it, or something. I can't seem to process the muscle memory to do it.
So, maybe you just aren't cut out to be a crocheter.
PS If you send me a pm with your address I will be happy to send some little flowers along to you. I've made quite a few in ivory and also white and pink.

Did anyone look at the aster directions that craftymom gave the link for? Wow!!! It is adorable and it has a really helpful chart at the bottom of the page - I'm a really visual person and that helped me immensely (to understand it - I haven't tried making one yet!) That pattern is from a book called "100 Flowers to knit and crochet" and there is a link to Amazon - holy cow they have pansies and lavendar and poppies and ALL kinds of things - I wonder if it has charts for all of them too!! It sells for $14 new, but there are probably some used ones for cheaper!!! what a nice Mother's Day gift eh??? Thanks so much for putting this link up CM!!!

Cindy, how is your edging coming along on your hankies for Mom's Day?
Slow, unfortunately, at the moment. Weekends are difficult to get fun time in, too many family obligations. But, I did manage to make a string of flowers last night. Really neat....will take a pic in the morning and post. Thanks for asking!
Cindy, Sure, that's fine with me! I'm glad that I posted the flower pattern and you have enjoyed it! You can subscripe to Lion Brands website and get news letters off and on from them. They usually send notice for some free patterns too! Have a GREAT Sunday!

Okay, as promised, here is the pic for the string of flowers I made last night. I wish the pic showed a bit more contrast but, I think you get the idea. I plan on threading a narrow ribbon through the centers.
Those are so cute Cindy. What are you planning on using them on?
I am not sure yet but, thinking that with the ribbon weaving through the flowers I do not want to cover them up much. I will play around tonight after dinner and come up with something. The color is a light cream #10 thread so, I will stay in the soft tones.
Oh, just thought that I need to make an Anniversary card for my DH's folks perhaps I will use it there.

Good Morning Friends! I worked until the early hours this moring on trying to make an edging for my Mother's Day cards. Mary (craftymomto2) sent me some directions for baby layette edgings. Well, folks if ya haven't use a #30 size thread and #13 steel hook before, trust me when I tell you they both are very small. NOT that I cannot work with them, but, I cannot at night.
So, I switched over to a #10 thread and #8 hook to make this one. After I got the pattern down (rather proud of myself for creating this one) it did not take too long. I made it a little longer because I am not sure how long I needed it to be. I figured I could tuck it around or cut it off and use an edge sealer.
Yippee - had a table at a stamping yard sale at our local art/stamping store Saturday and sold 50 crocheted flowers!!!! (plus a couple of old stamp sets, and some cards) and best of all - I sold more $$ than I spent!

Good for you!!! That must feel really good! Are you buying anything fun with your new found riches???

It looks great. I think I usually use a #10 hook with size 30 thread. I don't think I ever go smaller on a hook. But I know what you're saying about seeing at night. I can't use dark thread at night, even with a bright light over my shoulder.

Oh, I didn't look to see what size thread or hook some of those patterns used . Could you weave ribbon thru the holes?? or my first thought was crochet it in green to use for grass?? I think I like the ribbon idea better, than you can use colors that are on your card too! Very good job for so early in the morning!

yeah, that is what the directions called for but, I think I will play around with the hooks before I commit to one. I have an Ott light over my shoulder as well!

Very nice. Almost enough to do two fronts the short way depending on the card size. Inspiration for us all to try it.
I know what you mean about very small, esp at night; some days I go cross eyed. I bought a hang around the neck magnifier and it helps, but sometimes I have to get it almost up to my nose for a good look. I'll have to check out the #30 thread though as I don't know that size.

Good for you!!! It probably felt great having your flowers sell. That's always good for a person's ego. The selling more than buying is amazing in the sense that I (and probably many others) have little self control when I can spare the money, so you deserve a BIG pat on the back for that.
I could never do that thing some members do where they track money spent vs. stuff made. I doubt I would have earned $100 yet, but I've probably spent over $3,000 getting my basics (stamps, pads, paper, etc), storage for it all, Cricut (& cartridges, accessories, etc), embellishments off E-Bay (went a little crazy there), Cuttlebug embossing folders (for the rolling pin method)... I guess it will help to have more experience so I will learn what I actually need to get the job done. At least crocheting the flowers is cheap!

Thanks for the nice compliment. I think the #30 looks slightly bigger than sewing thread!

Yeah, Mary, I too was thinking about weaving ribbon through and then tying a bow or using a button with the ends of the ribbon coming through the holes in the button and tying in a knot.
If I make it a bit longer, I can run the ribbon through and gather in to form a ring....like an old-fashioned collar.

Yeah, I know, I am making a comment on my own stuff.....well, I am looking at this and thinking I want to make it lacier next time instead of so thick. Oh, could you see this in black?

This looks great Cindy. I tried working with a smaller thread yesterday. It's gonna take some practice. LOL

What cool ideas. The ring would make a neat frame on a card or scrapbook page.
I am not a "crochet-er", but my mom and I sort of stumbled through one of the easier patterns. (I used this one, but with just one color of thread: http://mycrochetstuff.blogspot.com/2...e-crochet.html) Here's my first project with one of my flowers!
