I love how they blend. They are refillable if that helps and if you need to the tips can be replaced. I have the Sketch, which cost a little more, but they hold more ink and can be used with their air brush system. I don't have that, but some day...........
Other markers......I've heard that Bic will give similar effects. I haven't tried. Bic does not have the range of colors that Copic has.
So...IMO, there isn't a replacement, but I'm lovin my Copics!
You could look at some of the other "art quality" markers on the market like Prismacolor and TriArt. They don't have the colour range and they're not refillable (thus the lower price since you have to replace the entire marker when you run out of ink). I really like my copics and have quite a selection of Sharpies and Bic Mark Its to complement the Copics. I personally use the Ciao markers (I bought 6 sketch to see if I liked them - don't like the shape myself). The Ciao are cheaper and since they can be refilled (and the amount of ink that comes in the barrel when you purchase the ink) makes them the better choice in my opinion. Have fun deciding.
I have a set of 36 Bics that I got at Sam's and a set of 24 Sharpies that I found at Target. I like them quite a bit and use them all the time.
The only problem with the inexpensive markers is that the colors are quite bright and intense, even in the shades that look lighter on the pens.
I used a coupon from Hobby Lobby and patiently got one Copic marker at a time in some of the lighter pastel colors to use with the Bics and Sharpies. This is working well for me.
My coloring style is not the artistic, blended style that uses 4 different shades of each color, though. I'm happy with some lighter highlights and darker areas for outlines.

I appreciate your post and responses here, I am new to the world of copics as well - I just bought 5 to try them out, i like them, but there is an awful lot of chatter about them that I just don't see. Maybe in time, maybe if I had 72 colors to blend...I just don't know yet. I got the ciao's as well (about $4.50 each vs $7 where I got them). I have a bunch of those bics as well, 99 cents at staples...perhaps I'll try the idea of using them together.
Thanks for sharing the cards as well.
Check out Promarkers. They are sold at carpediemstore.com and some local art stores. IMO the Promarkers color just as well as the Copics and I am a Copic owner. Promarkers I think come in 132 colors. The only reason I bought Copics was for the airbrush system, otherwise I would have purchased Promarkers.

buy several of the same color family. If you buy say a pink, blue, green, etc. you won't get the technique of how to blend. I made that mistake when I first started buying. Now if I buy say a G2, I will buy several G's. Hope that helps.

That is just what I did - bought a pink, a brown, a blue....yep, nothing to blend! So I'm going to get a few more in a couple weeks and make sure they are similar to what I bought this time so I can blend them!

they are great my name is julie, hope u dont mind me joining in they make mt samps look fab especialy my magnolia stamps:grin:
I have been stamping for over 14 years and when the copic craze first started I thought that I would never spend that much for markers - especially since I already owned tons of coloring methods - Colored Pencils, watercolor pencils and crayons, chalks, Chalk pencils, even oil pastels!
Then I made the mistake of trying out a friends markers. At first I did not like them at all, and that was simply because I had not learned how to use them. I tried again because I thought - well sheesh I must be doing something wrong if I hate them and everyone else loves them!
Ya the rest is history I guess! I have all 4 Caio sets and am working on getting the TAC Caboodles which are the sketch markers arranged in coordinating color families.
Now I find it difficult to even look at my other coloring mediums when I need to color in an image! You don't need them all - but you will WANT them!

At first the cost of copics were too much for me to wrap my tiny budget around! But with savvy online shopping and browsing, you can find them at really great prices. I don't know if linking is available any more but I get mine from Die Cuts R Us (dot com) since Claudia has great prices when she orders them. This is a great way to get them individually to 'fill' those gaps and try colors out!

Yup I order from Claudia too when she does her copic sales... and when she has left over markers in stock- good price fast shipping. I have 200+ so I only really need a few colors here and there and I like to throw them in on orders with other supplies like Claudia's paper sampler kits and Xpress It blending card... luv my copics for the vibrant colors and beautiful soft blended look you can achieve! There is a learning curve- you need to learn how to use them and practice but I would not trade them for any other marker of coloring medium.

Thanks for sharing your gallery. Just love the home is where your dog is card! The coloring is great.
I just took a class in Copics and also thought I would be patient and buy one at a time with a coupon at Hobby Lobby. That way I won't feel the bite of the cost. I may even drag my DH with me shopping so I can get 2 at a time.
