The idea is to have something that will lay flat and drain out the liquid. I think if you had a large piece of plastic canvas and placed fabric on top, even that would work. The typical method is to dip the deckle into the paper slurry (wet pulp) and lift, but I've also seen someone scoop out the slurry with a cup and gently pour it into the deckle. I think you could pour it onto any of the above items as well. I like the idea of using a rolling pin or dowel over a towel on top of the paper sheet to squeeze out the water. So many methods without spending extra money. I've seen people add food coloring, ink, even paint to make the paper colored. You can also add a sheet or two of colored paper to the pulp mix, or add plant material such as green grass or flower petals before you blend.
You can add all kinds of things to make your paper decorative after blending, but there are a few things you don't want to add before blending, because you don't want to get them wrapped around your blender blades.
Thanks for the challenge Melody. Do you have to use a blender as mine is fairly new and expensive and I really don’t want to use it for this. Any tips?

Jayne, I get that. I find it interesting that many of the videos state to keep that blender for craft only, but I've used mine for food after making paper. I mean, do they not clean the blender? But if you make a lot of paper, the process can be hard on the appliance.
Do you have a food processor? You could use that.
There are a couple of ways to mash up your paper without using an appliance. Obviously paper was made long before we had blenders. You may want to soak the paper longer.
Obviously, these are more labor intensive, and it would help to start with smaller bits of paper. But they will still work, although you may have some larger bits in the end result. I think a hammer would also work if you have something to work in to 'corral' the mushy paper while pounding.
Made some paper today. I think my frame is a half sheet of paper. I made 12 pieces. Waiting for it to dry. I poured it into my frame directly from the blender. Added some dried flowers to some and some colored paper bits to a few.
Melody thanks for the videos above. I did think that surely people clean their blenders too but my guess is maybe it’s to do with chemicals, inks…not sure but I decided I didn’t want to use my brand new blender. I haven’t even used it to blend food yet lol. Thanks for the alternative method.

Jayne, it can be hard on the motor, especially if you have too much paper in with not enough water. I think the ratio I saw recommended was about one cup of paper scraps to four cups of water. It also helps to have your paper scraps pretty small. I had some paper egg carton in mine, and even through my pieces were small, it's so thick it took longer to break down into the pulp. You also don't want to use any type of glossy or coated paper. Old newspaper, old books, tissue paper, old telephone books (I don't know what yours are like, but ours are very thin paper), old encyclopedia pages, copy paper -- all of those are good. Anything heavy, you need to soak longer, like card stock. I used some bits of card stock, but only blended it in a little after the rest was all blended. Then you get flecks of color mixed in, but you can still see them. I also used dried flower petals - lilacs and carnations, but not in the blender.
Thanks Melody. Love this challenge and I know Nancy will too. I have some papers that I coffee dyed last year after watching Cat Hand’s video. I love some of the patterns the lady did on the other video. I will add this to my list and eventually get to play. Great challenge.

ha, this thread has bumped up to the top ( so, its the one bold off to the side when you glance at the forums this morning...) so, I found you guys.
I have not made paper in years but, what I used to do was sort the "too small to use" colored scraps into paper lunch sacks by colors and when the sack got full it was "enough" to make a sheet of paper. (I have the frame thing) I have not done this in a long time as I still have sheets on hand that I made years ago but, I think the addition of the botanicals is very cool ( I never did that ) and I did use my regular house blender. but, I also have a newer one since then I wonder if that's why I didn't get as many years out of my original one as my MIL did ha ha. ( she bought it for me to make baby food with) you know, kinda like my mama bought me a sewing machine thinking I would make curtains with it... ( I actually did do that once but, for the most part, my machine see's paper)
Yay Stacy has found us. Welcome Stacy and you made me laugh about your use of your blender and sewing machine. Sounds a bit like me. Hope you join in on our challenges.
Happy messy inky day everyone...time to make stew and dumplings...not made those for a very long time. Wish me luck.

Hello everyone,
today i am really trying to get caught up on posting few projects of late. Here is one that I had in mind ever since Nancy posted for it in MARCH!!! omg, in all fairness i made this in April and this is just late in posting. THANKS NANCY for all the cardboard inspiration. I could never have gotten this far without your example! xoxo
these 18 yr old grandnephews never new what was coming when they got these cards... but as GRUNGE'y young men... they loved them. OR maybe they loved the $$.
no matter, it was a hit
thanks F L, and THANKS Nancy for the rescue of my blank idea of what to make them.
Teresa

That is amazing to me that you found eyes so close in size to her face. ( what a thing to notice hmm?) I think I notice things like this now because, we don't seem to get much print magazines anymore. And I cleared my piles of them out years ago.
Teresa, so glad to see your fab graduation card with cardboard - such a great look!
Jan, saw your beautiful card for the cardboard challenge too - so sorry I am late checking it out - I have been working so much lately that it is hard to keep up with things lately.
Stacy, glad you found us!
Melody, love your challenge - I may have to get some frames and try this!
Hugz

I combined the coffee stamping for backgrounds with a VSN challenge- My card here: Gold in the Garden
I tried quite a few of the samples, so have a stack of these. I used regular coffee and then added instant coffee as the coffee was too pale for my liking.
My last collage class done. Don’t ask me what it means. I’ve no idea. It just was fun and makes me smile. They would have looked better in a bigger journal but I’m practicing. Happy inky day.

Jayney these are Sooooo cool! I accept the challenge and will try my hand at magazine art journaling. I’ve not done any art journaling before at all and this kind of mix with collage seems like a lot of fun! I love what you are doing with your class pieces above.
Thanks Amy. I had fun with them and what do they mean? Just fun to me lol. I cover up the magazine elements but most people don’t. In my next challenge which will be on collage I will include a video on how to do this sort of collage that doesn’t affect copyright on the classes.
Jean awesome card. I must check which challenges I still need to do on here..so far behind.
Happy weekend everyone

Amy and Gracie, fun page and book cover. Gracie the inside is fantastic too. I love how you kept the monkey theme going and your Dylusions collage ladies is brilliant. Now you can fill it with junk journal pages. Thanks for playing ladies. Such fun

Here are some junk journals the poppets made out of cereal boxes with me. So proud of them to stick with it for 5 hours. They did so good. I sewed DGD’s wrong but it’s special and different lol. They did the rest. They used gesso, texture paste, stencil, spray inks and chose all of their own papers inside and their embellishments. I just let them go for it, Dagmar they thought the mini book you sent me is sooo cool so we will make one of those next time.
