I know exactly what you mean. A lady asked me to make a card for her DH's 40th birthday a few weeks ago. The only info she gave me was that he liked gardening and Formula One! I found it really hard to find anything really manly for gardening and I ordered a F1 car stamp which didn't arrive in time. So, as a back up I made one of those Flip Books and when I met her I explained the situation and showed her the alternative that I had made (telling her she was not obliged to purchase it if she didn't like it). So, there I was, prepared for this major disappointment. But when I looked at her she was almost in tears and through her watery eyes stated that "it is all I could have imagined and so much more." at which point I almost cried! LOL
So to all those people for whom we spend our time making cards - even just a little appreciation goes an extremely long way. It makes our efforts so much more worthwhile.
My favorite reaction I never saw. I found out that our neighbor cut the saying I put on his graduation card out of the card and carries it in his wallet. Makes me smile everytime I think of it.
My other favorite was the card I made for my friend's nephews commitment ceremony. The guys loved it so much they had the card with them during the ceremony.
