I use a regular pink eraser on almost every new set of stamps that I get. It is very quick and easy. Especially helps on the bold images like you were describing. You can really tell the difference...

yes I agree I think you are rubbing too much in the same area. Try to get more chalk on your pen to start wtih, then just go in one direction across the area. I think pressing too hard or scrubbing...
