I really like the SU ribbon keepers. I've tried a lot of things and it's my favorite. I can arrange them by type, color, AND size...perfect for the touch of OCD I may have:-)
ETA: AND they totally stack...I love when you can go vertical! Awesome for space saving!
I have 2 ways. 1 a ribbon keeper I found at Walmart, although SU ribbon spools (or at least the ones I bought several years ago) are too big for it. For my SU ribbon I have a basket that I keep the spools standing up with a little through the holes of the basket. I can post a picture tomorrow if needed.
Rolls take up too much room IMO. I use the Cropper Hopper embellishment boxes. I have stored my ribbon this way for many years. You can see complete details here. There is no creasing, I can store smaller pieces, etc. This is one storage option I have not changed since I started storing my ribbon this way in 2007.

I wind my ribbons on round clothespins, secure them with a straight pin and then sort them by color into candy jars.
i love the way this idea looks, in the jars. but i cannot find any of the round clothespins. only the hinged clip ones, i have looked at target, & walmart. any ideas on where else i might find them?
I buy mine at Hobby Lobby, every now and then they have their craft wood on sale for 50% off and then I just stock up on them. They have them in their craft section where they keep the popsicle sticks. Some people have had luck finding them at their dollar stores, but I've looked and looked and never found them here.
I use the Container Store's Elfa Door rack with spice baskets for punches and narrow shallow baskets for rolls of ribbon. I have this attached to one of my basement closet doors with the elfa door brackets (nothing screwed in) Not the cheapest solution, but I did not want to attach anything to the wall (I'm constantly moving stuff around) and it works great for me. Elfa goes on sale several times a year for 25-30% off.

I don't have the door rack but I do have the baskets which I organized by color so I can pull a basket over to see which shade matches what I'm doing--the problem I have is that the smaller rolls fall through the cracks. Then, I also have some that aren't on rolls...I know there's the clothespin idea but I do not have the patience to roll all billion ribbons that I have LOL. I hung some on a tie hanger, but I guess I need another one because I can't see them if I put too many on one hook.
Does anyone have any ideas that don't require rolling everything you already have, and accomodates different sized rolls??!

HTH.
thanks for the info, i will have to check out those places, i will let all know what i find.
I used to have all of my ribbons on the clothespins, but the jar thing never worked for me - I had to dump out the jar to get the one I needed - so I got little eye screws from the hardware department and screwed them into the heads of the clothespins, threaded four of those onto a large book ring, and hung them on cup hooks screwed into the bottom of a shelf. I've attached a pic of a small section so you can see what I mean.
I've moved since that pic was taken, and re-done my entire organization and storage, so now I just roll the ribbon into a little roll, put a tiny piece of low-tack masking tape (I use freezer tape) to hold the end, and put all the rolls in clamshell boxes. You can fit a TON of them in there and see exactly what you have. I've attached a pic of that, too.
I really, really like the Cropper Hopper boxes idea, but I'm too cheap to buy all those boxes, and I'm very space-conscious, so even the tiny extra space they'd take up would bug me.
I guess it's a good thing that there are options, so we can each do what works for us, right? Some great ideas on this thread!
i finally got around to trying several stores for the old fashioned wood clothespins. None at all at Big Lots or Deals. only the clip kinds at Dollar General. I did find some at Hobby Lobby in the craft section, (thanks leslierod). they weren't on sale this week, but the glass jars were 50% off this week. i bought the little mini clips, they looked less splinter-y than the reg size ones. i was afraid they would snag my sheer or satin ribbons.
thanks for sharing your ideas.
I used to store my ribbon on these home made cardstock holders similar to the plastic ones others use and then clipped together with office binder clips and then hung on to the wall. That worked for a while, but when I recently re-did my space, I decided to do away with that. I now have the ribbon rolled on chipboard that's cut to just the right size and fits in this Tim Holtz metal storage container I picked up at a garage sale.
Would you believe that all that ribbon on the wall fit into the case? I was amazed.
I try to keep my ribbon in front of me, its easy to grab what I need, I also have 2 Large drawers full of ribbon and a large jar. Im still in the process of getting all my ribbon up , its been a slow and steady process...hehhehehe.
I use these that I found in the ribbon section in Michaels - for $20 each but with a 40 or 50% off coupon it brings them down to a great price - I have 3 of them and they stack ontop of each other too for compact storage - when I go to crops I just grab em and go - and the dust stays off them too - I LOVE em
i have all of mine in shoeboxes, pretty shoeboxes thank you! lol...sorted by color. i do not have the time or patience to roll them all back up and keep them neatly set, so i just throw'em all in their color box and dig through

I like that for ribbon on the spool. I'll have to check those out. Thanks for the idea.
