Default Do you have a full-time job? If so, what is it?

It always interests me to find out stampers have some very exciting "real jobs" and "real lives" outside of stamping. You guys may know me as a stamper/blogger etc. and that's it, but I have this whole other life, and vise versa, the people in my "real life" and at my "real job" know me only as a musician and teacher, and very rarely do they ever see the fruits of my crafted labouring... I had a fellow choral conductor say to me after recieving one of my cards "Wow you must have a lot of extra time on your hands." I almost punched her in the face after that comment, but after a few deep breaths I said, "I make time for my hobby because it's important to me." But usually when people find out about what I do (usually by googling me or seeing my signature on my email) they are really surprised and excited about what I do outside of music.

On the flip side, here is my music. "Hold On" is a song I recorded for a movie soundtrack to be released soon...

Do people at your place of business know your obsession? Do they know you have a talent in another area or are you keeping it hidden? What's your full-time job??

I am a full time Social Worker for the State of Oklahoma and a mom. People at work know my talent and sometimes it is a blessing and others it is not. As a state employee we don't make the big bucks and at work I am on the employee reconition committee. We try to do fun stuff for the office and create high employee moral. Once everyone found out that I am crafty they want me to make things for other workers birthdays, plan showers, etc. Most of the time I don't mind but I do mind when I am the only one doing it and people act like they expect me to do this. ON the flip side I have coworkers pay me to make things for them personally. So I guess it all averages out in the end. Now my family (mom-dad- brothers etc) have no clue that I do as much crafts as I do and that it is my side business with a friend. But this weekend I am going home to do a craft show and this will be the 1st time they have seen my work. I am a little nervous. My mom is my best/worst critic so I am a little nervous what she will think of my work. She is very traditional and I am not.
Anyways I am loving this thread.

Wow! Tobi that is beautiful music. You have such a beautiful voice! Wow!
If your crafting is 1/2 as beautiful as your voice it must be gorgeous!
As for me, I am a SAHM to 3 girls. Everyone who knows me knows my hobby. I am also a SU! Demo. so I guess you could say that's my job too even though I don't do workshops anymore.
Keep up the beautiful singing. I need to check out your crafting now.
Thanks for sharing!

My full-time job is only part time, as it's tasting beer, and because of alcohol consumption we're limited in the hours we can work. In the past I've worked as a live-in cook (paid - still do only it's unpaid, LOL), and for a company which imported and distributed fine art supplies. In both that job and my current one people have been aware of both my papercraft and knitting/embroidery hobbies.
Thanks for the link to your song - music is another major activity in this house. No wonder we don't have time for TV!!!

Tobi, that song is beautiful and your voice is amazing. Now I'll have to make sure I see that movie!
I usually give my job title as peon, but the boss tells me that I am the office manager. I'm an EMT, biller, scheduler, orderer of supplies, etc. Not many of the people I work with know that I make cards, only the few that I have sent one to know.

Project Manager in the IT department of a major insurance company (also a PMP).
Also mother of four (ages 19 to 12) and 2 cats.

And some folks at work know of my "obsession" with stamping and scrapping, but not many...I am pretty low key about my private life.

Gorgeous song Tobi!
I'm in the Air Force, I'm basically an OSHA/EPA equivelant for the Air Force! Everyone I know knows about my obsession with crafting and so far no one has given me grief about it; however, I usually get put on the spot to make going away gifts? LOL!

I am a Teaching Assistant who runs a Nurture Group (group of up to 12 kids who have social, emotional and behavioural difficulties). I work in an area of great social deprivation and although it is only 2 miles away from where I live it seems like a world away! The kids I work with just need some TLC, some patience when working with them and a little understanding! I wouldn't change it for the world!

I'm a Federal Bureaucrat  with a litttle less than 2 years to go until I'm eligible for retirement. One of my coworkers took me to my first Stampin' Up workshop, so she's aware of my addiction, and I've contributed some cards to a charity auction we did in the office, so a few others are as well. I look forward to having more time to indulge my creative streak . . .

I'm an eye doc. Actually I got pulled into Stampin' Up by a co-worker who does workshops after work in the break room. So every time I learn a new card fold or technique one SCS I have to bring it in for the ooohs & ahhhhs. My demo has become one of my best friends, and I think I'm one of her best customers.

I don't "work" anymore - I was by turn a technical illustrator, a computer applications specialist, and a medical transcriptionist . . . all those syllables, and now I'm a Mom. We also have a bunch of pets so that counts as a ton o' work.

Some people around here know that I make cards. Now that I am a stamp illustrator for CHF, most have responded with a jaw drop to find out I can draw, too. Of course, there are others who just have a blank face when you mention stamping at all LOL!!

It's interesting but there was a community art show a couple of weeks ago here and I was also amazed to find that several people I know (this is a small town) are quite the accomplished artists! It's wonderful really.

First, great song, beautiful voice Tobi! Wowee!

I don't actually have a full time job, but I have enough part time jobs that I feel like I work full time. I teach at two universities one night a week each (one undergrad and one graduate class), I teach water aerobics and cycle at the YMCA, I'm the PTO president at my kids's school (for three more weeks and then I retire - yahoo!) and I am a full time wife and mother. The wife and mother part is my favorite!

I love the song and your voice is really beautiful. I gave up a great position in healthcare/hospital administration to take care of my two granddaughters when they were born. They now are three and almost six. The six year old Claire has had her art work published on a website called artsonia through her school. I started her very young stamping and using markers. Who knows maybe I had something to do with her talents. This is the BEST job I ever had. I hope they remember these days when they get older...

This is a fun thread!
Wonderful voice!

I just finished grad school and am studying for boards to work as a Physician Assistant. My husband says I have to get a job if I want to buy more scrapping/stamping stuff.

Also mom to two teenage boys which is more than a fulltime job.

Cool jobs, everyone! I'm an "administrative assistant" in the aviation insurance industry - if you're familiar with flying, my boss calls me his "second in command"! He doesn't know about my crafting - probably wouldn't care, either! ;)

Talking

I am a pediatric occupational therapist. I work in a public school system with children ages 3-12 with various disabilities. I am also a mother of 2 children, a dog (Weimaraner) and 2 house cats. Most people know that I love stamping, cutting and coloring (as I manage to incorporate alot of this into my therapy activities at work). I also scrapbook.

I think someone should do some research on the subject of brain anatomy (right brain/left brain etc) and it's correlation to "crafty" people. Too funny. Any researchers out there??

Do people at your place of business know your obsession? Do they know you have a talent in another area or are you keeping it hidden? What's your full-time job??
Everyone at work knows about my obsession, the stamping one and the shopping one, lol. They all seem to like it when I make them something or give them a card so that's pretty cool. I dont think they "get" it like other stampers do but I guess that's normal, right?

My full-time job is a Secretary for a large peanut business (the only peanut shelling co. in the country) and my boss lets me go on SCS as long as I dont have any other work, so I get to be here a lot.
My boss also knows I have a stamping "job" and lets me do stuff at work for that, like blog, take pics of my cards, participate in Unity's Hip Hop thing on Thursdays (he knows not to bother me too much;))...so it's pretty wonderful.

Oh yeah, I am the mom of a teenager and wife but that's not too much "work" they are pretty self sufficient at this point ;)

Your voice is beautiful

sounds like an ideal situation..

I have a fair bit of "free time" during the day because I teach all of my choirs before and after school, so i get "spares" during the day. That's when i'll edit photos/type blog entries/chat on SCS hahaha... It's nice to have a job with some freedom.

And thanx for the compliments everyone.. ;) Now you know the "other" me. haha..

I've always worked with young children. I'm an early childhood specialist at a family resource center. I've also taught preschool and kindergarten and owned a day care center. YEs, people in my small agency know my love for stamps. I've gotten our 83 yr. old volunteer hooked and she loves it. Another co-worker also stamps and scraps and comes with me to a stamp workshop each month. They all know about it because they have gotten cards from me. We even held a card workshop in Feb.at the center. They made six cards...my co-worker and I designed the cards and got them ready. IT was all free....nice snacks, hot spiced cider, chai latte...it was lovely. About 20 enrolled.

Your beautiful song helped to relax me after a particularly stress filled day at school. I'm a music teacher.

That song is lovely; you have a truly beautiful voice! This thread was a great idea- it's nice to learn about the 'other' side of my stamping friends' lives.

I am a librarian and work in a public library near my home. I love my job. I run book groups, teach computer classes and work at the adult reference desk.
I am married and have two boys ages 19 and 15. Stamping and reading are my passions.

I'm an Occupational Therapy Assistant with the public schools. I've worked in the schools for 10 years off and on and 2 years in a head injury/rehab facility. Co-workers in both places know I stamp! My head injury patients use to love to see me come into our daily group with my box of stamps. The men especially loved it. Of course it helped that we were usually making cards for soldiers stationed in Iraq or Afaganastan.

This post will probably kill this thread. I know that trying to explain my job certainly kills any live conversations I have. So all I will say is that I work for an organization based in Washington, D.C. Only one of my colleagues is aware of my hobby, but I wouldn't be surprised if she's forgotten about it. LOL!

Well, you didn't kill the thread--that's my job!

I teach middle school--health education for 7th and 8th graders. Yup, I'm one of the crazy people that teach your kids about "the birds and the bees". And heaven help me, it's spring and they are ALL in hormonal overdrive.

I do a lot of crafting (sewing/quilting/stamping) and everyone at work knows that it's what keeps me (relatively) sane. They always ask me to do something crafty with the kids on "special event" types of days.

Your song is beautiful, Tobi! This is a fun thread, I love learning what everyone's "real job" is.

I was a vocal music major in college, but now music is just a hobby for me (except during piano practice with my boys!). For the last 8 years I have been in outside sales, mostly education. We sell machines that print plastic ID cards, poster making machines, Xyron laminators (big giant ones - 44"!), vinyl cutters, and a machine that's like a Cricut on Steroids. I left in December to work full time in the craft industry, but have since gone back to work in sales. Now I'm the rep in charge of selling all the photo ID products. Since I only sell those, I get to work part time, so there's still time for crafty stuff. I teach a few classes a month at 2 of my LSS's. The people at my office know that I stamp, but they really don't care. Until it's time for a crafty project. LOL
