Default stamping on wood

I bought my sister a jewelry box for her birthday and I want to stamp on it. It's wood. Do I need to use craft ink? Should I paint if first? What about stazon?

I have found that pigment inks don't work well on wood--just don't dry. Dye inks will bleed if you leave the wood look unless you spray first with Krylon Matte Spray. This gives you the look of the wood, but not a glossy finish. Some dye inks will bleed if they're really juicy, and others will do fine. Some Staz On colors will change completely! I've found the green will change to a dark ugly color! I've ended up using Palette inks with perfect success and then heat setting (being careful not to make the finish bubble), then spray sealing again (matte or glossy) just for fingerprint and cleaning protection.

If you want to paint first, you can. I've done that too. Sand it with a fine sandpaper, paint it, then take a grocery bag to give it a final "sanding." Again, don't use pigment inks, dyes won't dry here either now with the paint so I've used Palettes with great success. Spray with either the Matte or glossy to give it a seal.

HTH! :-)

I know when I tried to stamp on the cutting boards from the Target dollar spot, they ended up looking terrible. I used classic ink from SU, and the ink was completely absorbed by the wood and came out looking very pale, no matter what the color.

It did bleed a little, so I would recommend not using un-treated wood.

I have made quite a number of wood picture frames -- sanded, painted, and stamped. I use the pigment inks and emboss. This works very nicely and I have had no complaints.
