Question Stamping on wood

Hi,

I need to make a gift to bring to my next demo meeting...we're all buying a wooden item and stamping/embellish it. It's unfinished pine. I wasn't sure how to go about doing this....do I seal it first? Don't want to ruin it!!! Any suggestions/tips would be greatly appreciated.

I stamp on wood with stazon then color with watercolor pencils/blender pens and then seal it once it is all done. Hope this helps.

What is the wood piece, and will it be painted first?

I used to do alot of decorative art painting on wood. We always sealed first, sanded then painted or stained from there.

Of course, it depends on what you are doing with the wood. Pine can be grainy if not sanded first. As well, if you seal and then sand, your ink will probably stamp on smoother.

Good Luck!!

I bought wood Christmas Trees from Michaels (unfinished pine) I painted with craft paint then stamped on them with white craft ink and Encore Gold ink let dry then added 35 bulb light set to predrilled holes. They were a big hit. I gave them out as gifts. Hope this helps.

Hi,

Yes, I've painted on wood before using acrylic paints. We sanded the rough edges and sealed first. I thought if I stamped on unfinished wood it would "bleed". It's a small box that opens to hold your keys. I was thinking of doing a white distressed finish, but then the center of the door (it's a solid piece, but has trim around it so it looks like a frame) I was thinking of stamping some flowers on CS, adding some ribbon, etc...that way the recipient could change out the picture for the seasons. The person getting it would be a demo so that's no problem. We'll see how it goes! Maybe I'll have a scanner by then and the picture will come out nice!

Unfinished wood has to be sealed somehow before applying any kind of decorative finish, or the embellishments will sink in and the edges will feather and bleed together. Either you prime the wood with the first coat of paint, or you need to apply some kind of clear coat if you want the natural look of the wood to show.

Thanks to everyone for your input on stamping on wood. I think I will get some Stazon next week for good measure, as well as seal it first.

Happy & Healthy New Year to everyone!!!
