I really like SU's background stamps but I seem to get a very 'spotty' image. I really ink the stamp up and press very hard when I stamp the image, but still I'm not getting the full image on my cardstock. I have tried to stamp on regular paper first to make sure I'm getting enough ink on the rubber. On regular paper the stamped image looks great, however when I stamp it on cardstock it's awful.
It's a handy little trick called butt stamping! And yes, it's exactly like it sounds. Ink up your BG stamp put it on the paper and then sit on the stamp. I used to have a problem with an uncrisp image too until I tried this. Works great for me! Plus, how often do you get to use your weight to your advantage??? ;0)

For background stamps I put the cs down on top of the stamp. Sometimes I add a sheet of scratch paper before I rub it to make sure I get a good impression. Good luck!

I, too, ink the BG stamp and then keep it face up. I then put the cardstock on top of the inked BG stamp, put a piece of scrap paper (usually grid paper) on top of that and then use the heel of my hand to rub over the scrap paper. Be careful not to shift the cardstock when moving your hand over the stamp area. I get a perfect image every time!!
Good luck!!!
P.S. I've never tried butt stamping, but I hear that it works great too!!!
I also put the cardstock to the stamp instead of the stamp to the cardstock. Rub it well and you should get a much better image. One thing I do also is I rub the stamp pad onto the background stamp instead of tapping it. I seem to be able to ink it better this way and don't get seems. Over time, this can make your stamp pads fray, but I haven't really had a problem with that.
I use the above mentioned method of face up...
AND another thing that really helps is to make sure you get good coverage from the ink. I usually rub the pad across first, to moisten the stamp. Then I gently pounce the pad back and forth across the whole surface to keep it from showing any lines.
Takes practice but BG stamps are da bomb!
I have one more suggestion that has changed my life.............I just learned it too from a stamping convention. You see, I was background stamping impaired, and really even any large stamp stamping impaired.
Now, I am an expert at this. You can be too! It's so easy.............
Take your stamp, ink up, put on paper. Stand up....take another medium sized stamp, put it on top of the large bg stamp (wood to wood). Put your palm over the medium sized stamp and press (your hand will be on the rubber part, b/c that's face up), move it slightly, press again, repeat until you cover the entire image.
