Default For all the Procrastinators Out There

I am the "pro" of "pro"crastinators.
So I've created inserts with this poem to enclose in my late cards.

I hurried, I scurried
I remembered the date.

But in true Holly style-
This card is late!

Of course, insert your own name for "Holly".

I fell earlier this spring and busted a disc in my lower back. I had two chairs I could sit in relative comfort w/o too much pain in my house, one being my computer chair, so decided to inventory this thread up to the end of page seven. There are approximately 587 poems to be found or linked to on this thread, much of them usable for crafts other than cards and for your reading pleasure. I like longer poems, however, there are many websites [w/ search engines] listed for your convenience and several excellent poets on SCS whom I'm sure would be happy to write you short verse if you don't find what you need in a timely manner. Or perhaps you just need a little confidence in your ability to write verse. Challenge yourself to write four or five lines. Free verse doesn't have to rhyme; it will be meaningful if it comes from your heart, but there are rhyming dictionaries available if your lines must rhyme. I love my thesaurus too. Over the years, many people have quoted special stanzas of longer poems [see page 6; posts #224(5) for examples]; just be sure to name the author first and the poem your quote came from, so if the person you are sending it to wants to read the longer version, they will know what to refer to.
Also, I must tell you that I really appreciate my "shoemaker leprechauns" who have filled in for me from time to time and have shared from their bounty. Love that! I come to SCS when I can.
That said, here are a few more long poems. J

Marriage Takes Three.
By Perry Tanksley.

I once thought marriage took
Just two to make a go,
But now I am convinced
It takes the Lord also.

And not one marriage fails
Where Christ is asked to enter,
As lovers come together
With Jesus at the center.

But marriage seldom thrives,
And homes are incomplete,
Till He is welcomed there
To help avoid defeat.

In homes where Christ is first,
It's obvious to see,
Those unions really work
For marriage still takes three.

Inside a Dry Cleaning Shop
By Hagar Shirman.

Inside a dry cleaning shop,
They met each other on the rack.
Him so manly and so neat,
From the top of his hat
To the cuffs of his slacks,
So dark and handsome,
Tall and sleek.
Her so dainty and so pale,
With plump arms topped with lace,
A waist so tiny, tied so tight,
With a ribbon of the purest white
From which flowed a skirt,
So wide on every side,
His sleeves started to shake,
His heart flip-flopped,
His jacket stretched,
And two buttons popped.
He tipped his hat and asked,
Where did you come from?
From the Governors Ball, she answered.
And you?
A wedding, he replied.

Inside a secondhand store,
They met each other on the shelf.
Him -- ragged and a little torn,
His hat all crumpled up,
Four buttons missing and a sleeve,
And his bow tie gone.
Her--without the lace and all the bows,
Her white ribbon, a dirty yellow,
Her arms just hanging like a sack,
Her worn skirt drooping at the back.
We meet again, he sadly said.
Yes, she sobbed,
But more she couldnt say,
For then the trashman came
And dragged her far away.

I Wanna Be Yours
- John Cooper Clarke (b. 1949)
found at: The Tea House Times - Print and Online Tea Magazine, Tea Industry Resources, Articles, News

I wanna be your vacuum cleaner
Breathing in your dust,
I wanna be your Ford Cortina
I will never rust,
If you like your coffee hot
Let me be your coffee pot,
You call the shots,
I wanna be yours.
I wanna be your raincoat
For those frequent rainy days,
I wanna be your dreamboat
When you want to sail away,
Let me be your teddy bear
Take me with you anywhere,
I don't care
I wanna be yours.
I wanna be your electric meter
I will not run out,
I wanna be the electric heater
You'll get cold without,
I wanna be your setting lotion
Hold your hair in deep devotion,
Deep as the deep Atlantic ocean
that's how deep is my devotion.

The Kid Has Gone to the Colors
By W.M. Herschell.

The Kid has gone to the Colors
And we don't know what to say;
The Kid we have loved and cuddled
Stepped out for the Flag today,
We thought him a child, a baby,
With never a care at all,
But his country called him, man-size,
And the Kid has heard the call.

He paused to watch the recruiting,
Where, fired by the fife and drum,
He bowed his head to Old Glory
And thought it whispered "Come!"
The Kid, not being a slacker,
Stood forth with patriot joy
To add his name to the roster
And God! We're proud of that boy!

The Kid has gone to the Colors;
It seems but a little while
Since he drilled a schoolboy army
In a truly martial style.
But now he's a man, a soldier,
And we lend him listening ear,
For his heart is a heart all loyal,
Unscourged by the curse of fear.

His dad, when he told him, shuddered,
His motherGod bless her  cried;
Yet, blest with a mother-nature,
She wept with a mother's pride.
But he, whose old shoulders straightened
Was Granddadfor memory ran
To the years when he too, a youngster,
Was changed by the Flag to a man!

In Flanders Fields
By Lieut. Col. John McCrae.

In Flanders fields the poppies grow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place, and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago.
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe!
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch! Be yours to lift it high!
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies blow
In Flanders fields.

The English Scene
By Mary Howarth.

A Saxon church, a glint of flint,
A broad-backed barn, a copper tint,
A dovecote round, a cedar tree,
A manor house, some topiary.
A glimpse of lawn, a family,
A dog or two, deck-chairs and tea,
A timbered pub, a village green,
A cricket match, the English scene . . .

Let England thus, forever be,
And I for one content will be.

And all my joy and sorrow share

Have you read autograph verses from the late 19th to the first half of the 20th century? My mother has a small velvet album of my great-grandmother's and she gave me blank one as a birthday gift when I was young. Here are some that might be appropriate for cards. Enjoy!

My pen is poor
My ink is pale,
But my love for you
Shall never fail!
~~ @ ~~
May your life be "A Midsummer's Night Dream"
And always "As You Like It."
~~ @ ~~
When Cupid shoots his arrow,
I hope he "Mrs" you.
And may you live happy ever after
In your bungaloo.
~~ @ ~~
May your life be strewn with roses, and
Your husband meek as Moses.
~~ @ ~~
May Dame Fortune ever smile on you,
And not her daughter, "Miss Fortune."
~~ @ ~~
Remember me long,
Remember me ever,
Remember the days
We spent together.
~~ @ ~~
In your chain of friendships
May I be your master link.
~~ @ ~~
Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Sugar is sweet,
And so are you!
~~ @ ~~
When you get old and cannot wiggle,
Think of me and then you'll giggle.
~~ @ ~~
When you are old and cannot see
Put on your specs and think of me.
~~ @ ~~
As twilight draws the curtain
And pins it with a star,
Remember that you have a friend
And she is not too far.
~~ @ ~~
May your joys be added,
Your sorrows subtracted,
Your friends multiplied,
And your enemies divided.

Default message to go with a bookmark shower favor

Hello,

I'm making 50 ribbon bookmarks to go into little "fancy favor boxes" as a baby girl shower favor and was wondering if anyone had some cute words to let the guests know the gift is a bookmark! I was hoping to attach a little phrase to each bookmark rolled up and then place it inside the little box. I have a prototype of the favor ready if anybody wants more details. It seems sorta obvious to me that they ribbon bookmarks with a butterfly on each end, but I want it to be clear for the guests. Any help or ideas would be much appreciated!
Thanks for your consideration!

I'm a little bookmark, don't you see!
Take me home, I'm yours, I'm free!

Out of this box, unrolled and flat.
I'll mark your pages, just like that!

Thanks for coming on this fine day!
Welcome Baby Girl! She's on her way!

Note:

And if the baby girl has already been born:

Our little baby girl is here to stay!
Thanks for coming on this fine day!

Default One for you and . . .

Thank you Mothermark! You saved the day!

Poem
By Benjamin Franklin.

If you would not be forgotten,
as soon as you are dead and rotten,
either write things worth reading,
or do things worth the writing.

Two Autograph Books:
It Rained All Day that Night: Autographs, Rhymes, & Inscriptions. By Lillian Morrison. August House, 2003.
Yours Till Banana Splits: 201 Autograph Rhymes. By Joanna Cole & Stephanie Calmenson. 1995.
Examples:
-----
Can't think,
Brain dumb.
Inspiration
Just won't come.
Poor ink,
Bum pen,
Best wishes,
Amen.
-----
My ink is pale,
My pen is frail,
My hand shakes like
A puppy's tail.
-----
Some write for pleasure,
Some write for fame,
I write simply
To sign my name.
-----
Just to make you angry,
Just to make you frown,
I'm writing in your album [card]
Upside down.
-----
I've tried to think of something,
But my mind has fallen flat.
I'll say that you're a friend of mine
And let it go at that.
-----
In my garden there is a rock
On which it says, "Forget me not."
In my garden there is a tree
On which it says, "Remember me."
-----
Remember the M,
Remember the E.
Put them together
Remember ME.
-----
Postman, postman,
Do your duty,
Send this letter
To my cutie,
Don't you stop,
Nor don't delay,
Get it to her/him
Right away.
-----
Remember this, and bear in mind,
A good man is hard to find;
But when you find one good and true
Stick to him like Elmer's glue.

Riddle.
The land is white,
The sea is black,
It'll take a good scholar
To riddle me that.

Paper and ink.

I found the following poems on old postcards.

Blessed with Easter Peace
May Strife & Sorrow cease.
-----
Easter Greetings
Here I send,
To My very
Dearest Friend.
-----
In each song of triumph
In each anthem may
You with heart rejoicing
Join on Easter day.
-----
In the Sweetest Music
Bells are chiming
Jesus died to save us
Because He loves us so.
-----
May your heart
With hope and
Gladness sing
And the day to
You great blessing bring.
-----
The Savior slain
Now lives again
O'er earth to reign
Forevermore.
And how I pray
That He today
Sweet blessings may
On thee outpour.
-----
An Easter Blessing.
May he who rolled
The stone away
And left the grave
On Easter day.
A blessing sweet
To you impart
That shall o'erflow
Your happy heart.
-----
Sweet Happiness
Oh, may the light
Of Easter day
Shine warm and bright
Upon your way.
And may the Lord
Who lives to bless
To you afford
Sweet happiness.
-----
May the bells
Of Easter
Ringing clear:
Fill your heart
With love and
Cheer.

Mother's Day

A mother's love
How sweet the name!
What is a mother's love?
A noble, pure, and
Tender flame
Extended from above.

Default one for me...

A Good-bye Prayer.

Bless my friend who's gone away
I honor him this lonely day.

Lift my friend on wings of love
To Heaven lit with cheerful sun.

Dry my tears and soothe this pain
Let my world be whole again.

Baby's Shoes.
By William C. Bennett.

O. Those little, those little blue shoes!
Those shoes that no little feet use.
O the price were high
That those shoes would buy,
Those little blue unused shoes!

For they hold the small shape of feet
That no more their mother's eyes meet,
That, by God's good will,
Years since, grew still,
And ceased from their totter so sweet.
And O, since that baby slept,
So hushed, how the mother has kept,
With a tearful pleasure,
That little dear treasure,
And o'er them thought and wept!

For they 'mind her forevermore
Of a patter along the floor;
And blue eyes she sees
Look up from her knees
With the look that in life they wore.

As they lie before her there,
There babbles from chair to chair
A little sweet face
That's a gleam in the place,
With its little gold curls of hair.

Then O wonder not that her heart
From all else would rather part
Than those tiny blue shoes
That no little feet use,
And whose sight makes such fond tears start!

Road to the Mailbox.
By Ila L. Funderburgh.

Between the house and the mailbox
On an old, old farm I know,
There's a winding road through a still, green wood
Where the huckleberries grow.

Along the road on either side,
The pale green bushes stand;
Some berries are purple, some dusky blue,
But all of them are grand.

Here and there a gooseberry bush
Offers its mauve fruit tart.
Oh, it's hard to get to the mailbox,
Though it's never hard to start!

It's only when I'm very near,
In sight of the last oak tree,
That I suddenly hurry and run quite fast,
For maybe there's mail for me!

Father's Letter.
By Eugene Field.

I'm going to write a letter to our oldest boy who went
Out West last spring to practice law and run for president;
I'll tell him all the gossip I guess he'd like to hear,
For he hasn't seen the home-folks for going on a year!
Most generally it's Marthy does the writing, but as she
Is suffering with a felon, why, the job devolves on me
So, when the supper things are done and put away to-night,
I'll draw my boots and shed my coat and settle down to write.

I'll tell him crops are looking up, with prospects big for corn,
That, fooling with the barnyard gate, the off-ox hurt his horn;
That the Templar lodge is doing wellTim Bennett joined last week
When the prohibition candidate for Congress came to speak;
That the old gray woodchuck's living still down in the pasture-lot,
A-wondering what's become of little William, like as not!
Oh, yes, there's lots of pleasant things and no bad news to tell,
Except that old Bill Graves was sick, but now he's up and well.

Cy Cooper says (but I'll not pass word that it is so,
For Cy he is some punkins on spinning yarns, you know)
He says that, since the freshet, the pickerel are so thick
In Baker's pond you can wade in and kill 'em with a stick!
The Hubbard girls are teaching school, and Widow Cutler's Bill
Has taken Eli Baxter's place in Luther Eastman's mill'
Old Deacon Skinner's dog lick Deacon Howard's dog last week,
And now there are two lambkins in one flock that will not speak.

The yellow rooster froze his feet, a-wadin' through the snow,
And now he leans agin the fence when he starts in to crow;
The chestnut colt that was so skittish when he went away
I've broke him to the sulky and I drive him every day!
We've got pink window curtains for the front spare-room up-stairs,
And Lizzie's made new covers for the parlor lounge and chairs;
We've roofed the barn and braced the elm that has the hangbird's nest
Oh, there's been lots of changes since our William went out West!

Old Uncle Enos Packard is getting mighty gay
He gave Miss Susan Birchard a peach the other day!
His late lamented Sarah hain't been buried quite a year,
So his purring 'round Miss Susan causes criticism here.
At the last donation party, the minister opined
That, if he'd half suspicioned what was coming, he'd resigned;
For, though they brought him slippers like he was a centipede,
His pantry was depleted by the consequential feed!
These are the things I'll write him  our boy that's in the West;
And I'll tell him how we miss him his mother and the rest,
Why, we never have an apple-pie that mother doesn't say;
"He like it soI wish that he could have a piece to-day!"
I'll tell him we are prospering, and hope he is the same
That we hope he'll have no trouble getting on to wealth and fame;
And just before I write "good-by from father and the rest,"
I'll say that "mother sends her love," and that will please him best.

For when I went away from home, the weekly news I heard
Was nothing to the tenderness I found in that one word
The sacred name of mother why, even now as then,
The thought brings back the saintly face, the gracious love again;
And in my bosom seem to come a peace that is divine,
As if an angel spirit communed a while with mine;
And one man's heart is strengthened by the message from above,
And earth seems nearer heaven when "mother sends her love."

I recently checked out a scrapbooking book from our local library called Mother Goose's Guide to Scrapbooking Your Baby: Creating Fabulous Projects & Pages with Classic Drawings & Cherished Rhymes. By Kerry Arquette & Andrea Zocchi. Lark books, 2007. I love the ideas for using classic drawings and Mother Goose rhymes in the scrapbook. Most of the illustrations look like the old-fashioned black & white and colored lithographs from the late 1800s era to the 1940s. I've been trying my hand at coloring in similar stamped images using various techniques such as watercolor pencils and blender pens, colored pencils and markers. I haven't decided yet just what I like the most.
I want to make a baby album using this idea, but instead of Mother Goose, using Biblical images. The album cover is decorated in pastel colors with an image of Noah's Ark on the cover. I just pray I can find appropriate images to go with the theme.
What kind of verses have you used in your baby scrapbooks?

Ode to Love
Author Unknown.
Said to have been written on St. Valentine's Day.

Oh, Love! How potent is thy sway;
Thou'rt terrible indeed to most men!
But once a year there comes a day,
When thou tormentest chiefly postmen.

Oh, hard indeed the lot must be,
Of him who wears thy galling fetters!
But e'en more miserable he
Who must go round with all thy letters!

When at the door our vision greets
The postman, as he knocking stands;
The hearts of half-a-dozen streets,
Perchance he carries in his hands.

It seems a profanation quite,
That all the sentimental touches
Which lovers hit on when they write,
Should be within a postman's clutches.

Must all that love has fondly said,
Freely, with no reserve to cramp it,
Require a little paper square
To give it currency and stamp it?

Must sentiment extremely fine
Be down the area rudely cast;
The postman bawling, "Valentine!"
While in the act of going past?

I came across this poem my daughter wrote when I was going through some things. She was 13 when she wrote it. Not sure if it would be considered a Christmas/winter poem or a spring time poem...at any rate I think she did a pretty good job writing it.

Christmas time is coming near
I shake the bells, can you hear?

It's getting cold, it's getting late
Go outside and you'll shiver and shake

White little snowflakes falling to the ground
Look out your window, snow is all around.

Family visits by the dozens
Aunts, uncles and the cousins

Christmas comes and now it goes
Slowly but surely so does the snow

The flowers come out to dance and sing
Look out Frosty, here comes spring!

How to Write a Letter.
By Elizabeth Turner.

Maria intended a letter to write,
But could not begin (as she thought) to indite;
So she went to her mother with pencil and slate,
Containing Dear Sister, and also a date.

With nothing to say, my dear girl, do not think
Of wasting your time over paper and ink;
But certainly this is an excellent way,
To try with your slate to find something to say.

I will give you a rule, said her mother, my dear,
Just think for a moment your sister is here,
And what would you tell her? Consider, and then
Though silent your tongue, you can speak with your pen.

I need a poem - two actually.

I volunteer at our local animal shelter; we've outgrown our current facility, or at least, we'd like to. We take all the animals we can, but there are always more that we could help if we had the room (we do everything in our power to never put an animal down). Well, our wonderful director has found a phenomenal facility at a reasonable price - if we can raise the funds.

Here's my thought. I'd like to do my part by making card packs and selling them for the profits to go to the acquisition of the new facility. So, anybody got any ideas for a little poem? I'm thinking printing it on sticker paper and putting it on the front of the bag holding the cards. Only, I haven't a clue of what to say, something to the effect of "Purchase of these cards benefits the CCHS (Cabarrus County Humane Society)" and "thanks." Just to let the purchaser know what the $ is going to and to thank them. Not very poetic, am I?

The second need is along the same lines, but these would be individual cards that go home with those who adopt at the time they leave with their new pet. As it is, they just get all of their legal paperwork; I thought a soft touch to make them feel good about their adoption would be a nice touch.

Any thoughts?

Here's a couple of ideas:

For the first poem:

If you spend your money on these hand-made cards.
Our inches of progress turns into yards and yards.

Each dollar you spend will go to a wonderful cause.
A new home for us as well as more and more paws.

When we ask for your help, thank you for saying yes.
We'll greet you soon from a new and improved CCHS!

For the second one:

We are happy for you as you've chosen your pet.
We are happy for us as another goal has been met.

Our world gets much better as you leave to go home.
With your loving new pet in a new place to roam.

Your love will get stronger, the bond it will grow.
The rewards will be many for the kindness you show.

On behalf of all animals, together we're doing our part.
We thank you today from the bottom of our heart.

Hope they are not too mushy! I am an animal person! Dogs to be exact! Snort!

They are wonderful; thank you so much, Mothermark. Not too mush - it's hard to be too mushy for us - we're just a bunch of animal lovers; we're pretty sappy about our animals, LOL. I went to a meeting about the facility last night and learned that we're going to be a 100% no-kill shelter. Yea us!

Default Mothermark to the Rescue again! Yeah!

Hope your Christmas was very merry! Have a wonderful New Year!

A former art teacher and friend in an ATC club stained paper with fruit and vegetable peelings by pounding them between sheets of paper with a mallet hammer as a technique for coloring paper. The poem below reminded me of that.

Blackberry Ink
By Eve Merriam.

Berries on the bushes
In the summer sun.
Bring along a bucket
And pluck every one.

Look at my teeth,
Theyre raspberry red.
Look at my fingers,
Theyre strawberry pink.
Look at my mouth,
Its huckleberry purple.
Look at my tongue,
Its blackberry ink.

With God As Your Partner
By Helen Steiner Rice

It takes a GROOM,
It takes a BRIDE,
TWO PEOPLE standing side by side . . .
It takes a RING
And VOWS that say
This is OUR HAPPY WEDDING DAY. . .
Bur marriage vows are sanctified
And loving hearts are unified
When standing with the bride and groom,
Unseen by others in the room,
The SPIRIT OF THE LORD is there
To bless this happy bridal pair . . .
For GOD IS LOVE, and married life
Is richer for both man and wife
When God becomes a partner, too,
In everything they plan and do. . .
And every home is specially blest
When God is made a DAILY GUEST
For married folks who pray together
Are happy folks who stay together . . .
For when Gods love becomes a part
Of body, mind, and soul and heart,
Their love becomes a wondrous blending
Thats both ETERNAL and UNENDING,
And God looks down and says well done
For now you TWO are truly ONE.

Old Letters
By Adele Jordan Tarr.

I keep your letters [cards] for a rainy day;
Then take them out and read them all again.
So, reading, I forget that skies are gray,
And pathways sodden under falling rain.

They are so full of simple friendliness,--
Of understanding of the things I love,
No phrase obscure or vague, to make me guess,--
No deep philosophy my soul to move.

And though your eyes are lifted to the hills,
You still keep faith with earth, and earthy things;
Prosaic duty all your hour fills
The while you listen for the beat of wings.

You have read deeply in the book of life,
And you have added lines that I shall keep
To be a shield against the petty strife
Until such time as I shall fall asleep.

So when I would forget that skies are gray
I read your letters [cards] on a rainy day.

Oh my, what a great thread. I don't scrapbook much but I love quotes and poems. I top each blog post with some sort of quote, poem, song lyric . . . whatever. So, I keep a list of web sites to check for whatever topic I'm writing about. You can find my list here:

Her Valentine
By James Whitcomb Riley

Somebodys sent a funny little valentine to me,
Its a bunch of baby-roses in a vase of filigree,
And hovering above themjust as cute as he can be
Is a fairy cupid tangled in a scarf of poetry.

And the prankish little fellow looks so knowing in his glee,
With his golden bow and arrow, aiming most unerringly
At a pair of hearts so labeled that I may read and see
That one is meant for One Who Loves, and one is meant for me.

But I know the lad who sent it! Its as plain as A-B-C!
For the roses they are blushing, and the vase stands awkwardly,
And the little god above itthough as cute as he can be
Can not breathe the lightest whisper of his burning love for me.

My Mother
By Ann Taylor.

Who dressed my doll in clothes so gay,
And fondly taught me how to play,
And minded all I had to say?
My mother.

Who ran to help me when I fell,
And would some pretty story tell,
Or kiss the place to make it well?
My mother.

Who taught my infant lips to pray,
And love Gods holy book and day,
And walk in wisdoms pleasant way?
My mother.

The Letter Edged in Black
Author Unknown.

I was standing by my window yesterday morning,
Without a thot of soorow or of care;
When I saw the postman coming up the pathway,
With such a smiling face and jolly air.

He rang the bell, then whistled as he waited,
And then he said good morning to you, Jack
But he little knew the sorrow that he brot me,
When he handed me the letter edged in black.

With trembling hands I took the letter from him,
I opened it and this is what it said:
Come home, my boy, your dear old daddy needs you,
Come home, my boy, your dear old mothers dead.

The last words that your mother ever uttered,
Were Tell my boy I want him to come back;
My eyes are blurred, my poor old heart is breaking,
As Im writing you this letter edged in black.

Thos angry words I wish Id never spoken,
You know I didnt mean them, dont you Jack;
May the angels bear me witness, I am asking
Your forgiveness in this letter edged in black.

Dont Fret, New Mother
By Lois Lake Raabe

Youll have some busy days, soon,
With your babys care.
Youll stroke her tender body
And kiss her downy hair.
Youll nurse and hug and rock her
And sing her many a tune
And then youll note with worried frown
That dinnertime is soon!

No need to fret, new mother,
Or take your babe from breast,
Your friends have made these dinners
To help when you feel pressed.
Just warm them in the oven;
Then, with your family there,
All eat with calm and loving hearts,
Remembring that we care.

Mama’s Patchwork Quilt
By Nita Smith

I love the pretty colors,
They’re dancing in my head,
They always seem to cheer me up,
Whene’er I make my bed.

There’s colors running up,
And others running down
Parts of it are square,
And other parts are round.

It isn’t something that will wilt,
I never water it.
For it is blooming all the time,
It’s mama’s patchwork quilt.

The Good Old Dolls
By Allan Ahlberg

We are the old dolls
Losing our hair
Hats and dresses
The worse for wear.

We are the old dolls
Noses worn
By little girls’ kisses
Before you were born.

We are the old dolls
We sit or flop
In the Old Dolls’ Home
Or the second-hand shop.

We are the old dolls
Fingers broken
Old food still in our mouths
Last words spoken.

We are the old dolls
Worse for wear
The little girls who loved us
No longer there.

Friendship
By Angie Monnens

Friends know all our secrets,
Friends know all our fears.
They’re always there to hold our hand,
And gladly, wipe the tears.
Friends are never far away,
When we’re feeling sad;
They long to share the laughter,
When the heart is glad.
They tend to overlook our faults,
Instead, look deep inside.
To reach into our “inner selves”
Where the “real you” often hides!

Take Time to Love
By Mary L. Case

A moment spent to share a smile
Or go that extra special mile,
To hug a child or greet a friend
Or care enough to stop and send
A cheerful thought to someone dear
To ease a sorrow, dry a tear,
Will bring God’s blessing from above—
When we but take the time to love.

Little Sister
By Janet Rumpf Wolfe

Your little sister follows you
No matter where you go.
She tries to win a race or two
But falls, or stubs her toe.

You like jeans and sloppy clothes;
She wears frills and lace.
You think baths are for the birds,
And hate to wash your face!

You must share your friends with her,
Your toys, your clothes, your bed
You often wish that mom and dad
Had bought a dog instead.

But when those bedtime shadows dance
Upon the floor and wall,
A sister sleeping next to you
Is not that bad at all.

Brotherly Love
By Jacqueline Schiff

Mom brought him home for me one day
In a blanket of baby-blue,
I kissed his bald and wrinkled head
And whispered, “I love you.”
He wasn’t fun to play with then
This infant red as beet,
For entertainment all he did
Was kick and eat and sleep.
Perhaps, I thought, we’ll give him back
This brother is a drag,
He’s much too young to play my games
Of jump-rope, jacks and tag.
But Mother said he’s here for keeps
I was thankful in the end;
My brother, once a childhood pest,
Is now my dearest friend.

Your Love
By Ardath Bigham

The world’s a better place for me
Since you have come my way,
The friendship and true concern,
You show from day to day.

Your patience, love and gentle ways,
I’m proud to be a part,
These are the things I felt the day,
You came into my heart.

You tell me that I’m special,
And I feel that way with you,
But then my dear, dear husband,
You’re very special, too.

Early to Rise
~ by Eileen Melia Hession

Two hours spent just eating meals,
Two hours more to cook,
One hour’s worth of exercise,
One more to read a book.

Eight hours at my desk at work,
Two commuting in my car,
Two more for makeup, shower, hair
(That’s eighteen hours so far).

Add two more hours for cleaning house,
And one to watch TV,
Two to spend with my husband, kids,
(Now we’re up to twenty-three).

Managing time isn’t such a big deal,
My schedule’s easy to keep,
But how long will it be ‘til I feel refreshed
On one hour a night of sleep.

My Pet Peeve = I get aggravated with those people who forget to record the poets name with their poetry. Its a great compliment to the writer if you remember to credit them with authorship. I know I would be tickled if you remembered that I wrote a particular piece and kept my name along with the poem on your card/project!

A Mothers Pride
Author Unknown (because somebody neglected to record it for posterity!)

I am so proud, dear son of mine,
Of you and your success.
My every thought and every prayer
Are for your happiness.
No matter what your life may hold,
I know youll meet it true
And justify the love and faith
And pride I have in you.

Letters-Link-Lives
Author Unknown.

You are a special friend of mine
And letters we exchange
Yet never have I seen your face
To some this seems so strange!

Your place is here, within my heart,
This too may sound unique
We share each others finest thought,
Yet never have I heard you speak.

For this, the friendship we possess,
We owe the mail a debt;
And I thank God for you each day,
Though we have never met!

Treasured Trinkets
By Nedra L. Krider

Such useless things I keep and keep
Until my drawers are all knee-deep
Pictures, letters, poetry and such,
Oh, nothing that amounts to much.

But every single things a part
Of the memories in my heart
Letters from friendsso far away
Id love to visit some day.

And poetry always can express
Heart-felt joy and happiness;
A tally, a picture, a piece of string,
Oh, you can find most anything.

Heres greeting cards of every kind
Birthday, Friendship and Valentine,
If I were only half as kind
As they saythese friends of mine.

How silly, did I hear you say?
O.K. Ill put my stuff away
To haul it out another day
And dream a few more hours away.

Patchwork
By Mrs. William Sullivan

With care and precision she cut the blocks,
Fancied a pattern where none had been;
Grandmothers grandmother piecing a quilt
Thats been handed down since then.

Every faculty of her mind
Bent upon making a masterpiece,
Jacobs Ladder and Lemon Star,
Irish Chain, and the rest of these.

Grandmothers grandmother sat and sewed
Lovely patterns of diamond and square
Berry Basket and Ocean Wave,
Chimney Sweep and Ascending Stair.

Carefully handled, we have them yet
Even today, there are places where
Youth and old age are sitting together,
Piercing the old-time patchwork.

A Pennys Worth
By Lallie Engell.

Remember when a pennys worth to you
Meant happiness, along with good taste too?
A penny then to spend, at the grocery store
Meant up to 10 to 15 pieces or more
Of the best tastin stuff
They called penny candy.
Candy dots on strips of paper
Licorice stringschocolate drops,
So good was it all.
Peppermint stickslemon drops
Five for a penny, it seems;
Coconut rainbow stripsthen caramels with nuts,
And that which you got the most of, I recall
Was the one they calledbeans.
What patience the clerk did have
For it took 10 or 15 minutes to decide
As how to get the most for your money, you tried.
As you left the store
Holding your sack,
Although wishing for more
Happy were you with your pennys worth
Of good old penny candy!

I am sorry but my list is a couple of decades old & the names got lost with many coping, computer virus, friends who shared with me, etc. I do make an attempt to keep the names NOW. I will not go back over my list to try to find the old names. Since the list has been out there, I don't even know if the site I coped it from is the writers site.

When possible I will list the name, but I will not cry over it if I don't have the name.

This card is late!

Of course, insert your own name for "Holly".

This poem is so cute!
