Default Michaels Rewards Program

I just received an email from Micheals for an "exclusive rewards program." Members get 20% off the entire regular price purchase every time you shop; 10 points for every $1 spent - 2000 points equals $10 Michaels gift card; 60% off custom framing; exclusive membership card. It costs $24.99. Has anyone else received this email? Anyone biting on it? I don't like the idea of paying for "rewards". Plus, they have the % off regular price purchase coupons more frequently and in crafting magazines.

I haven't rec'd this email yet. I do subscribe to the newsletters and regularly get coupons via email from them but not this one yet. Is it an addtional 20% off sale items, too? If so, I would definately bite on this offer. I like the idea of earning points towards gift cards - Lord knows I spend enough to earn some. lol

No -- it clearly says in the email and also on the site to sign up that it is off regular price purchases only.

Ahh. TY for that info. I probably wouldn't sign up for it, then because I never, ever, ever buy anything that isn't on sale or that I can't use a coupon for. Oh well!

What is the point of paying for something that they give out for free each week? I know you can only buy one thing with their coupon but you can shop more often.

Ok mine said only $4.99 a year and nothing about points...hmm. Wonder what thats about??

When I saw the email it made me think, I know I shop enough there that the 4.99 wouldn't be too much to spend in that I'd get it back cuz over the year I know I spend > $49 but on the other hand I HATE to pay for rewards programs. I won't go to Barnes and Noble for just that reason - go to Borders with their emailed coupons and free rewards instead....So I will probably pass. I am trying to be better about my craft spending and mostly using coupons...

I got the email too, and it's free.

This is from their FAQ section:

How much does membership cost?

There is no cost to become a member.
How long is my membership valid?

Your membership expires one year after the date of your enrollment.

I get the coupons in an email and have stopped even going in to try and use them. I just never see anything that I want.

I think they have some proofing issues. If I click the "Join Today" button in the email, it takes me to *link* removed.

If I click on FAQs, I go here.

No mention of $4.99 or Free.

Maybe this is why Michaels hardly has an ad on Sundays now, too. I find it rare to go on their website and find this week's ad NOT saying "Sorry, no ads for this week, check the store for unadvertised savings." It's so annoying.

The email I got was for $24.99/year fee and 40% off one item every time you shop. It also said not to share that this offer was exclusively for the recipient. Hmmmm. I am not biting... Sounds like they are trying lots of different offers and seeing which ones get the best response.

I may be the 'downer' on this, but where I work they are always teaching us to be cautious of emails that are fake, imitation, and take you to 'phishing' websites. Reading all of your comments about the various formats that this Michael's email is taking - and asking for money makes me wonder if they are legitimate or someone trying funky stuff? I haven't received the Michaels email yet; I still get coupons and ads in my local sunday paper and I'm in my local Michaels shop almost every week and have never heard anyone talking about it. The AC Moore store (which is next store to my Michaels) did start a FREE rewards program last year in which you earn points from every purchase... so perhaps Michaels is trying to jump on the bandwagon? Regardless, I would wait until the store clerks at Michaels try to sell me the membership first, at the register. That's just me being a little more cautious.

That's a thought. I went back and looked at the email again (already in my trash folder) and it is from [email protected] Maybe it is ok, but the "mic.michaels" looks rather strange to me...

They should set up their rewards program something like Best Buy, Staples and Office Max. Spend x number of dollars and you get a certificate, i.e. at Best Buy for every $250 you spend you get a $5 coupon.

I would be cautious with all these varied offers, consider where they might have gotten your email address. But on the other hand it could be a marketing test to see which offer is most attractive . . . someone should call a store or headquarters and ask, but I'll probably forget to! lol

I think it's a marketing test.... the web link is to a page called "loyalty landing." Mine was for 40% off with cost of $24.99. I don't think the cost is worth it. (of course, I'll kick myself if they stop doing coupons).

I will say that Michaels marketing is different for different markets. I get the ads emailed to me about every other week, but NEVER a coupon.

I think Victoria's Secret got in trouble for this many years ago, sending catalogs to different customers with different prices. They sent the higher priced ones to their bigger spenders.

The offer I received today was 20% off regular purchases for a fee of $24.99 per year. Hardly worth it, since I can use my JoAnn's and A.C. Moore coupons at Michael's and save 40-50%. Plus I receive Michael's coupons in my email and in magazines already. I never pay to be in a "discount" club, because it's never worth it for me in the long run. The different offers seem a little strange to me, too.

I got my e-mail from them today. It was for $19.99 a year, 40% off a single item every time you shop, 10 pts for every dollar, etc. At the bottom of the e-mail was a statement that says "Michaels is testing how to make MichaelsRewards most valuable to you. At this time, this offer cannot be transferred to anyone else." There was also a "Personal Registration ID#" at the top of the e-mail.

So it looks like they're sending out different offers to see how many people respond to any given one and then, once they figure that out, will likely advertise one of the more popular options to the general public that don't get their e-mails.

Wow! If this is in fact a M's marketing email and not a scam, I find all the different "offers" interesting in and of itself....I guess M's doesn't know the power of us internet chatters and our communication. I'm glad to hear they are doing something to draw in business as I read that they are one of the companies to "watch" for going under in 2009...however, what they really need to do is get some new merchandise and turn it over before it gets stale again!!

I wonder if the different offers are spawning from the type of coupons we use -- I think I've used more of the 20% off your entire regular price purchase than 40% off a single item lately. I'm sure they have some way of tracking that.

I just also realized that, at least on mine, the MichaelsRewards offer expires on Tues, March 31. I was originally going to suggest keeping the offer in your e-mail in case they stop doing coupons, but that idea may not work. Hmmmm.

I don't think so. I use mostly the 40% off coupons, and I was offered the 20% off deal.

I received an offer to but with different terms. Here is the link.

I think it's to offer two different reward programs to their loyal customers.

Hey, everyone! *PLEASE* don't post the links from your email. There's a unique reference # associated to each one, and when someone clicks on it, they can see your address and whatever information you have given to Michaels.

If you'd like to see the pages the links go to, here ya go (personal info removed):

I got one of the versions of the offer, too. In mine, it was 40% off one regular priced item every time you shop; 20 rewards points for every $1 you spend and when you reach 2000 points, you'll receive a $10 Michaels card in the mail; 60% off custome framing all year long; the cost to join was $24.99 per year.

For me, I rarely purchase stuff there that's not on sale or that I don't have a coupon for. If I want to buy more than one item that's regular price, I take my kids with me and give them a coupon, too. If Michaels did away with the ads in the newspaper or I stopped getting coupons via email, etc. then I would simply stop shopping there except for items that I needed that I could only get locally at Michaels. My store doesn't change their stock very often and we don't get a lot of the really cool items that the bigger M's stores get. It's not like I "need" any of the items there anyway. I've been a crafter for years so I have a hefty supply of all types of supplies on hand. The only rewards program that I pay for is my membership fee to BJ's warehouse type of store. I save enough just by filling up my vehicles at their gas pumps to pay for the fee, so any purchases in the store are an added bonus. I wouldn't even come close to purchasing enough at Micheals to justify paying for the "priveledge" of shopping there and waiting in their long lines because not enough registers are open, or having to search for a price for an item because the shelf isn't marked, or dealing with outdated sales signs that they don't bother to take down, or not getting a sales price for a scrapbooking pad when ALL the pads are on sale (but the stores people swear up and down that the ones I want aren't part of the ALL pads on sale sale) - you get the picture. Needless to say, my Mike's isn't one of the bright, new, wonderful Mike's that some other threads have said have opened in their areas.

I think this is VERY PHISHY!!! I doubt that Michaels would send out that many different emails with different coupon amounts and dollars on them... remember all of the scam websites for Stampin' Up, Mary Kay, etc... posted here just last month?

The closest Michaels to me isn't a new one either and they always have the same thing -- at least 80% of their stock, it seems. Now and again they will have something new. Another store about 40 minutes away is a newer one and they do have a better stock, but the layout of the store drives me batty. Even if the newer layout/better stocked store was closer, I wouldn't pay for a rewards program.

When I started this thread last night, I didn't expect for people to be getting varied offers -- some "better" than others. Very informative and I'm sure it isn't something Michaels expected to be "found out".

If the offers are all different, it's a scam. The only way I would even bother looking into this is to go to my local Michael's in person. I would almost guarantee that this is a scam. No company is so dumb as to mass market a promo and give a different offer to everyone.

I just called Michaels customer service line and asked if the program was legit and it is. I didn't give all the scenarios that people have received, but at least the $24.99/year is legit.

I guess I work for a very dumb 30 billion dollar retailer since we do this all the time with our rewards program, weekly ads and marketing offers.

For a new program like this, they are most likely trying out different program details by market. A lot of retailers do this, including AcMoore who in select stores has a rewards program. It is done so retailers can measure the effectiveness and do a cost benefit analysis of a program based on what the program guidelines are.

I received it yesterday. I'm not biting it. I don't see the point in it since now they have their coupons each week on-line. Also I don't see the fine print to tell whether you get the points for sale items or if you use a coupon. Even still to pay $24.99 a year and have to accumulate 2000 points is a lot.

I have AC Moore stores near me and they have a better Rewards program that does not cost the customer anything.

The differences in programs is probably based on the various parts of the country. I really doubt it is a scam, since the e-mails are actually from the Michaels address.

I dont understand why some have to pay for this benefit and some get it for free. That is crazy!
I understand marketing different offers to different consumers, but they cant be that stupid to think this would not get around on message boards all over the internet and that the ones that are having to pay for this are going to be furious. If I found out I had to pay 25 bucks for something my friend got for free, I would be more than upset.

I got this in my email too, $24.99 40% off yada yada. It will turn out to be like my gym membership. ;) I'll stick to walking in with my coupon from M's, JA's, ACM instead. This way in the event a Michaels near me ever shuts down (heavens forbid!) at least I'm not out of any money.
