I like Faux Linen for workshops. My stamp campers loved that technique...it was easy, didn't take a whole lot of resources, and results in a nice end product.
The "Try a New Technique" forum has such a cute trifold card this week. It would be easy to precut the pieces for your group and then let them just "stamp away." Forums at Splitcoaststampers

I found that I sanded off too much when I followed the tutorial on the resources page.
I love faux silk... you have to be careful what set you use (watercolor sets or bold shapes work well... watercolor minis is my preference)... working with the tissue paper is so easy and looks so fancy!
Cracked glass is my 2nd fav.
