Are you talking about Yahoo groups? I guess the easiest answer is that what we're doing here is a little step up from Yahoo Groups. First of all, YG are free, so you get what you pay for I suppose. Because the service is free, Yahoo probably has to find a way to limit their expenses - which means restricting the amount of storage space available on their servers for artwork, older messages and the like. Storage space = $$$.
Space will become a bigger concern for us at some point, but so far we're well within what our service provider allows. When we eventually need
more space our monthly fees to them will go up, so we'll have to deal with that when the time comes.
As to whether this is a "group service" or not, I guess no, not really. We've used various software packages to build the site rather than using a service that you go out and sign up for.
