Default Why is it....

that so many people prefer the layered look on cards- lots of layers, embellies, etc to the less is more look???

Just curious i guess....... I am sure it is in peoples over all style preference- but I know that CAS has a place out there- look at Kristina Werner- she has a HUGE following but it still seems that less is more is less loved.

so what is it that you like on a project?
more?
less?

Depends on what I'm doing. If it's for someone special or something special, I will add more. I love ribbon, brads, and bling! I try not to overdo. If it is for someone i don't know as well, or a just because/thank you kind of card, I may use less.

It depends on what I am doing. Sometimes I go simple... sometimes I "dress it up"... Depends on the card, the recipient, etc...

I can go both ways. . . .I love to layer embellishments and ribbons. . . and am not too much into the many, many layers when making cards anymore. I love the way it looks, but for me to actually make? Nah. . .I am simple.

This is just a thing of preference I guess. For me I like layers. It gives the feel and look of quality. Of being polished. I can buy a simple card at hallmark. Not that I don't think that the simpler cards are just as pretty. But, I don't think that everyone pulls off the less is more look as well as people like Kristina and Julie HRR.

Once in awhile I see a many layered card that I like or might CASE, but generally I prefer the simpler cards. I've never much liked polka-dots, stripes, busy prints, etc. And I don't much care for lots of bows. But, that's just my personal taste. We're all different.

Willosmama, will you post a link to the gallery of Kristina Werner? I would love to view her CAS cards. I tend to like the more is better idea but I can't make the ones lots of stuff on them. I love to see others work but mine just seems to be overdone when I try.

Good question.

I love cards with lots of layers, As you said, it is just my overall style preference. What I like about layered cards are the 'full and complete' look they give you. They visually offer a lot such as different textures, colors and designs, and that, to me, makes them interesting.

That's the best way I can describe my preference.

Some people like ruffles and bling on their clothes. Some people like nic-nacs all over their house. Some people like clean lines and simplicity in their homes and lives. I think this often carries over into our stamping. Also, I think alot depends on 'what stage we are in' at the time to what type of card we stamp. I've had my glitter, buttons, magic mesh, foiling and wax seals phases, oh my! Generally speaking I don't like to make cards that have thick bows and embellishments that make it difficult to fit into a normal size envelope.

I wonder... Do so many people really prefer the layered look, or is our perception of the numbers skewed because people don't always upload their simpler cards? Someone might think that a card isn't "worthy" of uploading because it doesn't have all the attached bells and whistles. Maybe simpler cards don't generate the dozens and dozens of comments that more complicated cards get.

It's hard to keep things simple. Throughout the design process, I'm usually thinking, "What else does this need?" There's only one OLC in my gallery, and it doesn't qualify as CAS.

I do both, too. Just depends upon how the stamps inspire me. I tend to do more layers with colored images (not sure why). I love both styles!

The name of my blog is More is More so I think you can guess where I stand on the issue.;) It's not that I don't like CAS cards...it's more that I don't feel I have the knack for them like Val or Julie or Kristina. I really think it takes a special talent to pull of CAS cards and that's just not really where my talent lies.

I do both and I like both, what I like the best is using quality products. They don't have to be expensive, but the best papers available do give a card, well just a better look to them. Now the embellishments can come in all price ranges, it is how everyone uses them that IMHO really set the standard for a card. I have seen very simple cards that I love, I have seem highly embellished card I love. Maybe I just love them all...LOL And I too do both.

I like to think of it as a plan for using stuff so I can justify purchasing more :P Just kidding I just find that I like the look of multiple layers and I often can't resist adding a little bling because it's pretty. I admire those that can do simple cards with style and sometimes I end up copying them for exactly that reason. It also depends on how many I have to make I've been known to do projects where by the end I'm super sad that I thought all the layering looked cool because by that point I'm sick of the project.

Me, I totally ADORE the limited look, if it is pulled off well (i.e. JulieHRR ~ whom I stalk and drool over her creations).

But to make a card that is CAS, It gives me fits. I manage to pull it off every so often, but for the most part, my cards have MORE.

Thanks to Jen's CAS challenge that has recently started, I am at least trying more often

I think there is a following for either way. And some of us like it both ways! (ha!)

My personal preference is for less. I actually cringe when I see a bunch of layers. I am pretty sure that I am in the minority. I have tried the layer thing, but it is just not me.

when i sit down to do a card i never know what way it's gonna go. I've recently started doing CAS cards and love them, but I also like doing techniques like sponging and paper tole too!! So it's just my mood.

My mind wandered.....

I prefer a cleaner look, but I can't always manage to pull it off. Some days I just can't help myself from adding some extra stuff.

I don't know why I like more complex cards, but I do. The more stuff, the better, I say. That does not follow through with clothing and decorating for me, though, like one poster said. I am much more restrained in other areas of my life than I am with cards.

For me, I think that if you have even one layer on top of the base, it needs something to define the edges. So that could be sponging - a lot or just the faintest bit round the very edge - or another layer to mat it. So when I'm following a sketch with several panels, I do way more layering than would be normal for me. Just looked back though all my saved cards for curiosity, and as far back as 04, 05 there's nothing with more than 3 layers, and very few of those. Then I found the resources section here and started trying out some of the techniques, and the average number of layers rose a bit . If I could do less is more well, it's what I would like to be able to do. As it is, I think I sort of sit in a middle ground - I hope.

I'm not sure if I pull it off or not either but I really love CAS. That's my fav. I can go either way though. I think I am inspired by the stamped image, paper, embelli's...it totally depends on what I am working with.

....and if it's a card I am sending to someone, I try to make something that would 'fit' their liking. I know that some of my friends like CAS and some like 'more is more' ;)

I do like CAS cards,BUT, the problem is, for me, when I start creating, I find it easier and more satisfying to add a touch of "more". I love the richness and definition that multiple layers and embellishments bring a card. The simple double matting with a black panel super tight behind the image then a coordinating color under that can really 'pop' an otherwise boring card or the detail of a bit of piercing or white signo pen dots around an image. It's the littlest details that can make or break a card, imho! You know, that piece of ribbon that's in the bottom of your stash and it totally brings in the "right" colors? I'm only trying to say that some of us just "have to" add that one-more-thing! That was part of the revelation I got when I first started coming to SCS! It made my card making BETTER!

Don't get me wrong, my favs are stuffed with Sparklegirl and Julie HRR's stuff. But I those take a certain type of talent and design savy that I must not have.

In short, when I do CAS, it just ends up PAB (plain and boring)!

Well, I love some of the wildly embellished, layered and blinged out cards I see here! And love to make 'em. LOVE cool patterns and glorious colors all knockin' around a bit!! SO many factors to consider on why it appeals to me. I've always liked intricate patterns in rich colors, and the artistry in a really worked up card can be something to behold.

On the other hand . . . .

Holy cow - I see CAS cards that WOW me and the first thought in my mind is, why? How did they pull this one off LOL!?!? And I want to.

I love to layer, love new techniques, and sometimes I just want to build that card right up!! But - sometimes I want to make sets of notecards for someone who I *know* does not want a gussied up card. They might be for professional purposes or just thank yous to friends, but they have to be clean and simple. Well - I do not want that to be boring. I want it to be classy - I want a Cary Grant card!! A Katherine Hepburn card! And by golly, I'm going to keep trying until I get there LOL!

ETA: YIKES ~ I had no idea! It's not *that* Val. . . it's THE Val!! LOL!! I didn't know her/your SCS username!

Now I'm going to this Val's gallery ;) ~ apparently, I've been missing somethin'!!
ditto- I like them to be simple, but striking.
and to the person above who said PAB- that's funny- that's sort of what I feel too, that mine might just be a tad to boring!

and yes, Val has great stuff!

LOL!! And ditto!

Many of my very favorite cards and artists are CAS, but I personally don't pull off that look well at all!

AJ I think you know how I feel about CAS...I am so drawn to the CAS cards that are done "just right"...but sometimes that just doesn't work for me and it's just plain. Most of my favorite artists have a CAS style, but like Jamie said, sometimes I just can't pull it off. And sometimes it takes me just as long because everything has to be "just so!" You can't hide crooked layers or mistakes on a CAS card.

For me, it's about the mood I'm in and what stamps I'm using. If I have a stamp that I really want to showcase, or a dynamic color combo, that can carry the card without a whole lotta "schtuff"...but other times I just feel the need to have 10 layers.

I admit, most of mine are a bit cluttered, but depending on the project, it varies. I think personal preference goes along with personality type. Some of us like 'order' and the clean look. Others go for the soft and 'cutesie' look. Or the bright, fun, over-the-top pizazz! If God made us all alike, how boring would that be?! I personally enjoy looking at the CAS cards AND the 'over-done' cards alike! In my book, 'It's All Good!!!'

I admire the the frou-frou cards, but just can't do it myself. I'm a CAS girl, both for personal preference and practicality. When I see the huge amount of DP and bling, I see dollar signs! Plus, if I wanted to mail something like that, I'd have to buy special boxes or envelopes and extra postage. Call me frugal . . . aw, heck, call me CHEAP! In clothing, I'm more simple and tailored, so I guess it only goes that I'm simple and tailored in crafting, too.

Now isn't that the truth!

I'm somewhere in between - I don't do huge amounts of layers but I can't do CAS either very often.

I think the thing is CAS done right "POPS" however there are so many multilayered cards about they don't necessarily stick to my mind as spectacular.

I love the look of clean and simple cards. I covet them in my favourites gallery. Why don't I make them? Basically I suck at them so I gave up a long time ago! I enjoy and admire how people are able to pull them off without them looking boring, but have a hard time with restraint. I also love 3 dimensional which is really hard to pull off as CAS ;)
