Hi, i need a poem for a retiring teacher, a nun who celebrated her jubilee (50 yrs). I have had the pleasure to work with her fifth graders these past 3 yrs. She will stay to help grades 1 to 4 with science. I read the posts, but did not see a retiring teacher poem. We, the teachers are taking her out to dinner after retirement mass. Thanks in advance!

"Strips and scraps and plastic sleeves,
Kaleidoscope colors and memories,
Die-cuts and stickers and two-sided tape--
Dear Lord, what a glorious mess it all makes!

But out of these tools and crafter's passion
A powerful album I hope to fashion.
Guide my art as I tell this story
And make this record to your glory."

From the book called Pages of Faith: The Art of Spiritual Scrapbooking. By Sharon Sheridan. Morehouse Publishing, NY; 2007. p. 95.

Have you scrapbooked your spiritual or church history? What page titles, quotes, scripture, and poetry did you include? Please share here.

My Christmas Cards
By Miss Burnside, a Christmas Card poet. (early 1880s)

My Christmas cards,
Oh, while I look
My store of pictured
Treasures through,
As in the pages of a book
I read kind greetings,
Sweet and true
And faces rise upon
The waves
Of mem'ry, that o'er
Time's dim sea
The treasures of its
Nooks and caves
Are softly bringing
Back to me --
And some are gay
And some are sad --
Yet cannot bring me
Thoughts of pain,'
Tis only memories
Sweet and glad,
That Christmas cards
Bring back again,
For all are fraught with
Hope and love,
So may the card
I send to thee
In some hereafter
Christmas prove
A happy memory
Of me.

~ from The History of the Christmas Card. By George Buday, Republished by Omnigraphics, Detroit, 1992 from an 1954 edition.

The Ultimate Guide to the Perfect Word.
By Linda LaTourelle. (saw this book in Joann's today.)

Default For Poetry Writers . . .

I found a little book in my local library called The Greeting Card Handbook: What to Write, How to Write It, & Where to Sell It. By Edward J. Hohman and Norma E. Leary. Barnes & Noble, New York, 1981. It has many samples of greeting card poetry!

If you like to write poetry, please feel free to share some of your work here!

Default Praying for a snowday?

I came up with a cute idea for a craft fair that I'm doing in November, but I'm stuck!
I had the idea of decorating store bought jar candles with a snowy or snowflake theme. They would be a snowday candle.
When there was a snowstorm forcast, the teacher or student would burn the candle and hope for a snow day. Many teachers have rituals of lighting candles and wearing their pajamas inside out in hopes for a snowday.

I'm stuck though... I can't come up with anything catchy.

I've gotten as far as...

When snow is in the forcast
light this candle ...

My friend's daughter is getting married shortly and I wanted to send my friend a nice card as she has been so stressed over the wedding arrangements. I have tried google but all the mother of the bride verses seem to be from the bride. Can anyone help with a suitable poem? Thanks in advance

Can anyone help these ladies with their request? It always takes me such a long time to find anything . . .
~~ @ ~~
A sonnet, called "The New Colossus," written by Emma Lazarus, is engraved on a bronze plaque on the Statue of Liberty. The words are:

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land,
Here at our sea-washed, sunset-gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flam
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles, From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome, her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she,
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

I am compiling a scrapbook on the history of the neighborhood in which I grew up. It is near the Santa Fe Trail. Are you aware of any historical or western poem about the Santa Fe Trail or know of a good poem about neighborhoods that you would be willing to share here? I'd be ever so appreciative. Thanks in advance.
I found these so far:

My Special List
Author Unknown.

I have a list of folks I know...
all written in a book,
And every now and then...
I go and take a look.
That is when I realize
these names...they are a part,
not of the book they're written in...
but taken from the heart.
For each Name stands for someone...
who has crossed my path sometime,
and in that meeting they have become...
the reason and the rhyme
Although it sounds fantastic...
for me to make this claim,
I really am composed...
of each remembered name.
Although you're not aware...
of any special link,
just knowing you, has shaped my life...
more than you could think.
So please don't think my greeting...
as just a mere routine,
your name was not...
forgotten in between.
For when I send a greeting...
that is addressed to you,
it is because you're on the list...
of folks I'm indebted to.
So whether I have known you...
for many days or few,
in some ways you have a part...
in shaping things I do.
I am but a total...
of many folks I've met,
you are a friend I would prefer...
never to forget.
Thank you for being my friend!

Hi ,
I just came across this thread and
I am happy to try to write a poem for you, if you still need one, but because I live in a hot climate I have to ask what is a snow day? Does this mean that they just stay indoors at school, or don't even go to school?

A snow day means a day off from school, usually because the roads are too bad for travel.

Default Homeschoolers usually don't get snow days! *smile*

Some of you are too young to remember Burma Shave signs along the highways of America. They used to put up red & white signs along the roadside, one line per sign every 100 feet as an entertaining advertising gimmick. The Everly Brothers even sang a song about the Burma-Shave signs in 1962. If you can't find the book below, there is a DVD called The Signs & Rhymes of Burma-Shave (Sentimental Productions; 1994) also.

I thought these poems might help you come up with ideas for some great guy cards & gifts! If you do create your own poem & card/gift using this idea, please post a link to your uploaded photo of the items in this thread. Be sure to include a typed version of the 5 or 6 line poem in the description when you upload it to your gallery. Thanks.

These four come from the book called The Verse by the Side of the Road: The Story of the Burma-Shave, Signs & Jingles. By Frank Rowsome, Jr. with drawings by Carl Rose. Foreword by Senator Robert Dole. (Stephen Greene Press, 1990).

"If a gift
You must choose
Give him one
He'll like
To use.
Burma-Shave."

"Every day
We do
Our part
To make your face
A work of Art.
Burma-Shave."

"This cooling shave
Will never fail
To stamp
Its user
First Class Male.
Burma-Shave."

"Dear Lover Boy,
Your photo came
But your doggone
Beard
Won't fit
The frame.
Burma-Shave."

I hope your Christmas was a merry one! Have a Happy New Year!

Prayer for the Coming Year
By William A. Bixler.

Our faith has been rewarded by
Your faithfulness and care:
But for the unknown paths ahead
We come to You in prayer,
We ask Your guidance for our feet,
And courage for each day,
That we may serve our fellow man
And help him on his way,
And may we give a helping hand
And have a kindly heart,
And to the sad and lonely one
Oh, may we do our part.
~~ @ ~~
(I was reading an old copy of Simple Scrapbooks' Mini Albums in an Evening magazine and thought this poem might make a cute mini-album!).

A Year's Calendar.
By Lucy Gray Kendall.

In January the snow is white
Like a clean, new slate on which to write.

In February we think of spring,
For the birds return to build and sing.

In March the crocuses pop up,
Holding a dewdrop in each cup.

In April come the splashing rains,
And wild flowers cover hills and plains.

In May the sun shines warm and bright;
Vacation days are now in sight.

The happy days of June just fly,
And quick as a wink, 'twill be July.

August brings us heat and haze;
School returns with September days.

October has its bright, blue weather;
Thanksgiving and November come together.

December and Christmas follow fast,
And before we know it, the year has passed.

And so the twelve months roll around;
Something nice in all we've found.

We thank God for giving us each one,
For work and study, play and fun.

If you live in the Midwest, you can easily identify with this poem a friend recently sent me!

WINTER Poem
Author Unknown.

It's winter in Kansas
And the gentle breezes blow
Seventy miles an hour
At thirty-five below.

Oh, how I love Kansas
The snow's up to your butt
You take a breath of winter
And your nose gets frozen shut.

Yes, the weather here is wonderful
So I guess I'll hang around
I could never leave Kansas
I'm frozen to the ground!

A friend, knowing I LOVE poetry, gave me this poem. She found directions on how to make the Dish Cloth Towel Britches on this website along with a photo of the said britches. www.craftbits.com

Dishcloth Pants

Stamp a tag, computer generate this poem, glue to tag, then attach tag to pants. Good for kitchen bridal showers.

Don't get excited
Don't be misled
These aren't for you.
But your dishes instead.

Untie the bows
Pull out the stitches
You've gained two dish cloths
But you've lost your britches

Default You are welcome to stay . . . have fun! *smile*

This poem was found on an Angels' Memorial in my hometown. I thought it would be great for a photo montage of children playing, whether as a framed gift or on a scrapbook page.

Through the Eyes of a Child.
By Myron Spencer Davis.

The Lord put hope and wonder in a child's wishful eyes
The hope of sun-kissed mornings bright with possibility,
The wonder found in daydreams and in chasing fireflies
The promise of tomorrow and how happy it can be.

The Lord put sweet nostalgia in a child's laughing eyes
To bring our thoughts to simpler times and days of way-back-when,
To memories of backyard swings and favorite lullabies,
To help the child inside of us to come alive again.

The Lord put pure contentment in a child's trusting eyes
The peace of mind that comes from being innocent and free,
A love that knows the sacredness of friend and family ties
We have the eyes of angels when we see what children see.

I just made this up for you. I hope this is what you're looking for!

This piece of card, sitting tight,
Made sure your card arrived just right.
But now its work is done, I say
Please recycle it in some way.

Cheers!

Here's what I've come up with, I hope you can still use it!

Snowday Candles

Light this candle in your hand
When a snowstorms looming.
Then make a wish that schools closed for the day
because the roads need grooming!

Default Nice poems! :)

Not in Vain
By Emily Dickinson.

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.

The Sunshine Fairies
By Laura Ingalls Wilder.

The little sunshine fairies
Are out on sunny days,
They gaily go a-dancing
Along the country ways.

They paint the flower faces,
The leaves of forest trees,
And tint the little grasses
All waving in the breeze.

They color all the apples
And work for days and weeks
To make the grapes bloom purple
And paint the peaches' cheeks.

Ah! There's a tiny fairy!
She's in the garden bed!
It's little Ray O' Sunshine
Who makes the roses red.

I have subscribed to this for a long time, and am just now getting around to checking it out more thoroughly. What a gold mine. Rush'd Lady - I can see how you are rushed - this must take so much of your time. Thank you and every one for all these wonderful contributions.

Two questions....
If I save this in a document file - would I be able to go through and delete all except the ones I could use?

I am looking for some shorter poems on friendship, to use on the inside of cards.

Thank you!

Default Friendship poetry

I also love to use poetry inside of my cards. Your public library will have a awesome section of poetry books. If a trip to the library is out do a web search of poetry & friendship or whatever other subject you need. I have a file box divided into holidays and events, sympathy, thinking of you etc. that I file poems under so I can find them when I need them. Remember to include the author of the poem and personal use only. If you sell them it could be copyright infringement.
Here are two you might be able to use.
Ila

A Precious Gift
by Bea Wooley
Friendship is a priceless gift
That can't be bought or sold;
To have an understanding friend
Is worth much more than gold.

The precious chain of Friendship forms
A strong and sacred tie;
It binds two kindred hearts together,
As the years slip by.

What I Call A Friend
One whose grip is a little tighter,
One whose smile is a little brighter,
One whose deeds are a little whiter,
That's what I call a friend.
One who'll lend as quick as borrow,
One who's the same today as tomorrow,
One who'll share your joy and sorrow,
That's what I call a friend.
One who's been fine when life seemed rotten,
One whose ideals you've not forgotten,
One who has given more than he's gotten,
That's what I call a friend.

Default Hi!

I have a folder specifically named Poetry in my document folder on my desktop on my computer. And then I have word documents named in categories like "Friendship" (divided into two columns) and I either type in a poem that I like in the word document or copy and paste it if I get it off the internet somewhere (I also type in the website where I got it). I'm not too "rush'd"! I also have three blogs, am a Sunday School teacher, domestic engineer, send cards to Just Cards, etc. Poetry is just a hobby that I love to do! And here's some more!

I found this book at our library recently.
I'm At A Loss for Words: What to Say When You Don't Know What to Say. By Cynthia MacGregor. 2002.
~~ @ ~~
And purchased a printed poem on a strip of acid-free vellum from a new-to-me scrapbook store recently called "Little Hands and Feet" by Patty Gaut @ 2007. By the company www.shopquickquotes.com

Several weeks ago, I attended my uncle's funeral and this was on the back of the service leaflet.

The Farmer
Author unknown.

He lived where the prairie winds blew so freely,
Across the land, where the earth was oft time stubborn,
Then suddenly gave forth her yield with utter abandon.
But he always knew the earth was the Lord's,
Man a tenant, with only a lifetime lease.

So, he lived and worked and whilst he worked, his soul grew.
As he strove to be a good neighbor, to condone, not to condemn,
Until suddenly and quietly, the Lord noticed that the granaries of his soul
Were well filled. His lease on life was up and lo,
I think his very soul was born upwards on the prairie winds.

My maternal grandmother saved this poem in a scrapbook. My uncle helped them farm. I re-typed this poem and added it to their 50th Anniversary scrapbook page.

Meditation
By M. Claudius.

We plow the fields, and scatter
The good seed on the land,
But it is fed and watered
By God's almighty hand;
He sends the snow in winter,
The warmth to swell the grain,
The breezes and the sunshine,
And soft, refreshing rain.

He only is the Maker
Of all things near and far;
He paints the wayside flower,
He lights the evening star;
The wind and waves obey him
By Him the birds are fed;
Much more to us, His children,
He gives our daily bread.

We thank Thee, then, O Father,
For all things bright and good
The seedtime and the harvest,
Our life, Our health, Our food;
No gifts have we to offer
For all thy love imparts
But that which Thou desirest,
Our humble, thankful hearts.

Here's a typical one-room school recital poem.

Here's to the Pioneers!
By Nona Keen Duffy.

Here's to the pioneers of old,
With lofty dreams and hearts of gold
.

Our country then was just begun,
But what a rich reward they won!

Those perilous nights and storm-swept days
They overcame in dauntless ways.

They planted crops and tilled the ground
Until the harvest came around.

They started homes and planned our schools,
With courage, hope, and work their tools.

They wrested from the wilderness
The country that we love and bless.

Here's to the pioneers so grand
That helped to make our fatherland!

Resurrection Power
By Carolyn R. Freeman.

Once an ugly little bulb
Was sleeping in the ground
A sunbeam shone from up on high,
And soon a leaf was found.

It grew and grew until one day
I saw a pretty sight.
That ugly little bulb had turned
Into a blossom bright.

Thus a little Easter bulb
Became a lovely flower;
But greater things than these are done
Through Resurrection power.

Jelly Bean Poem
Author Unknown.
Found at two websites:
www.dltk-holidays.com/easter
www.sundayschoolcrafts.com

Collect mini jelly beans of these colors in large plastic Easter egg or cello bag. Stamp a topper and attach this poem for meaning of jelly bean colors. Cute for children's parties or gifts at Easter.
RED is for the blood He gave.
GREEN is for the grass He made.
YELLOW is for the sun so bright.
ORANGE is for the edge of night.
BLUE or BLACK is for the sins we made.
WHITE is for the grace HE gave.
PURPLE is for His hour of sorrow.
PINK is for our new tomorrow.
An egg full of jelly beans, colorful and sweet,
Is a prayer, a promise, a loved one's treat.

Happy Easter Seeds
Author Unknown.
(Place tic tacs or candy eggs inside a baggie & attach this poem.)

"To have a happy Easter
Peek inside this packet here
It's filled with seeds for Easter eggs
To bring you springtime cheer.
No, you can't really sow them
But "plant" one on your tongue
And if they make you grow a smile
Then their Easter job is done.

The Meanest Mother in the World
By Bobbie Pingaro.

I have the meanest mother in the whole world. While other kids eat candy for breakfast, I have to have cereal, eggs, or toast. When other kids have Cokes and chips for lunch, I have to have a high-protein sandwich. As you might guess, my dinner is different from theirs too. But at least Iam not alone in my suffering. My brother has the same mean mother as I do.
My mother insists on knowing where we are at all times. Youd think we were on a chain gang. She has to know who our friends are and what we are doing. If we say well be gone for an hour, she insists that it is not an hour and five minutes. We cant sleep till noon like our friends. In fact, my mother is so mean that she breaks child labor laws by making us work. We have to wash dishes and make beds, learn to cook and do all sorts of exhausting jobs. I believe she lies awake at night thinking up mean things to do to us. She always insists on our telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, even if it kills us -- and sometimes it nearly does.
Now that we are teenagers our lives are becoming even more unbearable. There is none of this tooting of the car horn for us to come running. She embarrasses us to no end by making our friends come to the door to get us, and she says she will insist on the same behavior from our dates one day. And speaking of dating -- while our friends are dating by 13 or 14, my mean mother has refused to let us start dating until we are least 17. Seventeen, that is! And we can only go to a church or school function, then straight home.
As you can easily see, my mother is a complete failure. None of us has ever been arrested or sent to juvenile court. We havent experimented with drugs or sex. We dont hang around the shops with the other kids in the neighborhood who have nothing to do, and we have never thought of running away from home. And who do we have to blame? Thats right. Our mean mother. She is literally forcing us to grow up into God-fearing, educated, honest adults.
It is with this background that I look forward one day to being a mother. Then, when my children call me mean, I will stand a littler taller and be filled with pride. You see, I can thank God for the meanest mother in the whole world, and I want to be just like her.

All these poems are by Idalee Wolf Vonk.

~~ @ ~~
= birthday greetings =

Let me sprinkle your path wth birthday wishes
That all through the year,
Nothing will grow around your door
But happiness and cheer.
~~ @ ~~
= for Christmas card =

The humble shepherds from afar
Were first to see the wondrous star.
And hear the choir of angels sing
Their praises to a new-born King
By this we know that in God's sight
True humbleness means more than might.
~~ @ ~~
= to insert in Christmas ornament gift box =

When you pack away
All the ornaments
And take down
The Christmas tree.
Be sure you do not
Throw away
All of the Christmas glee.
~~ @ ~~
= donation card =

I am always happy
When people give,
Denying themselves
So others may live.
~~ @ ~~
= for another donation card =

Giving.
Keep giving in your heart this year,
Then share with all you know,
And you will be surprised to find
How giving makes you grow.
~~ @ ~~
= for an encouragement rainbow card =

Why waste your time with jealous glances?
Or look with envy long and hard?
The rainbow's end with the pot of gold
Lies right in your own back yard."
~~ @ ~~
= for another encouragement card =

When you feel your temperature rising . . .
Because you are losing your head,
Just stop whatever you're doing . . .
And say a prayer instead.
~~ @ ~~
= for Father's Day card =

To Dad.
I am shouting your praises aloud today
Because I think you're so grand,
And because I think you're the finest and best
Of all the dads in the land.
With lots of love from ______________.
~~ @ ~~
= for a get-well card folder =

This little folder
Holds for you
A pack of wishes
Kind and true

MONDAY
We miss you more
Than words can tell,
We hope that you
Will soon be well.

TUESDAY
Flowers are blooming,
Summer is here;
Just dropped in
To bring you cheer.

WEDNESDAY
The birds are singing
From above.
They tell us of
God's wondrous love.

THURSDAY
God made the world
So gay and bright,
Just trust in Him
All will be right.

FRIDAY
The grass is so green,
The sky is so clear,
Enclosed with this card
Are wishes sincere.

SATURDAY
Another week
Is almost through.
We hope you're feeling
Just like new.

SUNDAY
May God bless you
Upon His day,
And may rich blessings
Come your way.
~~ @ ~~
= for memo pad =

"Just hang me in a handy place
Inside the cupboard door
Then write down everything you need
To purchase from the store."

Just thought I would chime in here and let you all know that I love, love, love to write poems and would be happy to write poems for any of you needing a little something for a special circumstance, for something more customized to your situation. I will subscribe to this thread (thanks Rush'd Lady - how awesome you are in doing this!) and keep an eye on it. Also feel free to send me a pm and then I can always list the poem here in case others could use it. This thread was fun to look through! What a kick!
