I masked my edges and mixed my colors. I have found that preparation helps with a fast loose watercolor like this. I followed the artist prompts and used a spritzer when my paints weren't reacting . I found this more challenging than I expected because Paul made it look so easy. To do this kind of fast loose watercolor I think it would help just to practice on cheap watercolor paper and throw down colors onto a wet page to get an idea of the pigment to water ratio needed. I enjoyed trying this spring garden exercise.
