A View Out the Window

This card was made for Merry Monday Christmas theme challenge #265: http://merrymondaychristmaschallenge.blogspot.ca/ where the theme was outdoor winter activities.

I knew right away I wanted to use one of my favorite Stampin' Up! retired holiday stamp sets, "Winter Wonderland". Then I started thinking about "framing" the scene, and my window die came immediately to mind. Since I wanted to add depth, I decided to make it a shaker card.

Since the scene is so wide, I needed a "picture window" to allow it to show through. This meant I die cut the Madison Window twice to create a side-by-side window unit. I cut off the "ledges" on the inside edge of both windows to allow them to butt up against one another.

First, I stamped the scene with Versafine Black Onyx ink, then determined how big of a rectangular opening needed to be cut with my paper trimmer. The size was determined by how wide an opening the window die would allow, and how wide the scene required.

I glued the two window frames atop the cutout opening, and backed them with a piece of scrap clear acetate that extended well past the window opening.

I used Adhesive Foam Strips to create the "tray" around the scene where the opening was, so that my tiny little gold balls would stay contained inside the "window". I added the balls, then after removing the Adhesive Foam Strip top covers, carefully laid the top Whisper White window panel on top of the "tray" with all the balls in it. Note that you need to add some Adhesive Foam Strip pieces all around the edge of this panel to give it stability and to keep in flat.

Finally, I stamped the sentiment from SU "Happy Scenes" onto Whisper White cardstock, then used my Stampin' Up! "Word Window" punch to punch it out. Then I used the SU "Modern Label" punch to create a Cherry Cobbler mat for the sentiment. This was glued together, then mounted on the card front using Adhesive Foam Strips.

Since I'm an indoor hermit during the winter, I thought a big window looking out at the sledding, skating, and sleigh riding of people who have thicker blood than I was an appropriate card for this challenge. I'm sure whoever gets it this holiday season will like how it turned out!

I rated it a difficultly level of 4 out of 5 because of all the precision cutting of the window, and the ball-chasing I had to do :-) Those little guys REALLY roll!!!
