Made for 52 Christmas Card Throwdown Color Challenge #40-16: http://52cct.blogspot.co.uk/ in which the challenge colors are gray, soft blue and soft green.
Since one of the challenge colors was soft blue, I knew I wanted to do some kind of winter snow theme. But rather than snow, I chose to use the soft blue in the sky as if there were a borealis. The green along with the blue was perfect for the effect I wanted.
The card base is SU Pool Party cut to 4.75"x9.5", then folded to a 4.75" square. Each subsequent panel was cut .25" smaller to allow matting to show beneath them.
I started by cutting a masking mat that was larger than the 4.25" Whisper White panel, then die cutting a 3.25" circle using Spellbinders Circles Dies. This masking mat was centered over the white panel (which I had affixed to my work surface with double stick tape to prevent any shifting during sponging) and taped down using painter's tape.
HINT: us a ruler and light pencil to mark the center of the white panel you will be fixing, in order to ensure you can center your sponging mask. I just positioned the ruler from opposite corner and made a light mark from two different directions. You should erase these marks before you start sponging.
I tore Post-It-Notes so that the sticky back was on the part I was going to use. Then after affixing the Post-It, I sponged the green and blue sky. I used the "other half" of the Post-It to protect the sky as I sponged the snowy hillside, then moved my snow mask and repeated the snowy slopes using SU Smoky Slate ink.
The tree and polar bear were stamped using SU White Christmas stamps with Smoky Slate ink.
The SU Petite Pairs "Merry Christmas" sentiment was also stamped in Smoky Slate.
I really liked the outcome, especially after using a gel pen to add some random "stars" to the sky. The card was fun and easy to do! I set the difficulty level to "3" because of the need to create and center the circle mask before the actual sponging could begin.

Your aurora borealis is just fabulous; the ink blending is super. Love the snowy hills. The addition of the bear and tree is fab. Lovely use of the colours. Thanks so much for playing along with 52CCT this week! Deborah, DT.
