Sheri gave us a fun story this week along with a challenge to bring lots and lots of flowers to the niece of fellow Splitcoastie, Pam Mackay. Katie is having a hard time with life at the moment; I hope our cards bring some sunshine to her day.
International post and flowers are not very compatible so I went the weirdo arty abstract option. I thought I would be very clever and use one of the colour palettes from the colour challenge....buried under here are paints and inks almost identical to one of the samples.......you should see the mess on my desk and gelli plate. Needless to say this won't be appearing in the colour challenge!!
Nothing really went according to plan on this gelli plate background so I went to Plan B and sponged on a truckload of Peacock Feathers distress ink using the smack & squirt technique. Now I love the background!! The stencil is actually a die cut used as a stencil. The stencil was made using a previously reject background - with a gazillion layers of paint and/or ink, reject pieces make great stencils when die cut.
The modeling paste is from a batch I made a few months ago and stored in an airtight container: - half cup baking soda, 2 tablespoons white school glue and 2 tablespoons white acrylic paint. The 'use by date' on the baking soda was something like June 2009.
Homemade modeling paste can also be made using talcum powder instead of baking soda.
For a much thicker texture paste use 1 part white acrylic paint, 1 part talcum powder, half part white school glue. Both recipes can be made with coloured acrylic paint. I made some purple texture paste last September, stored in an airtight container and it is still as good as the day I made it.
After the background was dry I placed it in my MISTI stamping tool. Initially I stamped this Unity poppy image with Archival ink, it wasn't dark enough so with the magic of MISTI I stamped it 4 more times using Versafine. The Unity sentiment was stamped with Versafine. I blasted a bit of heat onto the ink so it would set over the modeling paste.
Thank you for looking and have a great week everyone.

Now aren't you the clever, resourceful stamper??!!! I was just about to shut down my computer for the night, when up popped the email telling me you had just uploaded a card, so NATURALLY, I HAD to come and see it - what a wonderful treat! Love how the peacock feathers inking "fixed" the problem you had with your gelli plate - sure looks very artsy now!!
Thanks for giving us the recipe to make our own paste and even the thicker textured version too. I will be sure to try this. I love how you used your rejected diecut with all the paint layers to use as a stencil - the chicken wire die looks fabulous!
I am awaiting the arrival of my MISTI tool - could not wait after hearing of all the adventures you are having with it!! Hugs!

What an amazing mixed media work of art, Susie! I love the imaginative way you created this and what a wonderful sentiment you chose for it! The colors are just gorgeous! Your gelli print came out fabulous!
Thanks for the laugh on the 2009 baking soda too! Glad you could put it to use!

wow Susie, love the way you did this...it has an optical illusion quality to it. Your honey comb goes under and over your image giving it a wild exciting trip to look at! I am blown away! Did you do that on purpose? if so, you are a genius, i could NOT plan such a thing! ANAZING!! Love repurposing the out of date baking soda...I didn't really know it HAD an expiration...hmmm, I wonder how old mine is?

LOVE the artsy look of this card you made for Katie! Your inked, emb bkgrd is great and I like your flowers. I have only used Ranger white texture paste. I'm still practicing. Hee. I saw Jennifer McGuire demo Ranger's "new" transparent paste and that intrigued me. Darn, I guess there isn't a recipe for that.

Susie, is there anything that you can't do stupendously???? This is gorgeous and shows your innate artistic talents. Stunning background and love how you did your bouquet of flowers. A wonderful and appropriate sentiment to make it "perfect".
