The bird is from Bugawumps. I masked it and dragged a sponge, double loaded with pan pastels across the background. Then I removed the mask and used a stylus tool and more pan pastels to color. Pan pastels are creamy and smooth. I think having the tools that go with them is important. The pp are a bit pricey and I am more likely to use a brayer or a sponge. I have to admit, I don't use them much. I find they need a fixative spray. I own some so it's no big deal. In all honesty, the pan pastels don't add anything new or that I can't achieve with my vast array of ink supplies and they take up precious room. At the same time, they are the nicest chalks I have ever worked with.
