I don't remember which wonderful SCS poster clued me in on gum arabic, but I mixed roughly 1/4tsp pearl ex with 1/8tsp gum arabic mix it until the pearl ex makes a smooth puddle in the bottom of whatever you are mixing it in (I bought cheap 6 well watercolor palets and had one for each assortment). Let the gum arabic dry and then just use a wet paintbrush/aquapainter to watercolor with the mixture. The gum arabic binds the pearl ex so you don't need a fixative. It's kind of like making your own sparkling H2Os... Look for gum arabic at places that sell watercolor supplies. It's not cheap (my 2.5 oz bottle cost 11.70 at Michaels), but it will last a LONG time! have fun!
