APR10VSBNB-- Friday, Apr 23/6:30 PM -- Who Do You Think You Are?
Title: Who Do You Think You Are? Hostess: Mary Pat (Mary_Pat419) Keyword: APR10VSBNB Day/Date: Friday / April 23, 2010 Time: 6:30 PM EST
One of the newest TV reality show is Who Do You Think You Are? , a television program initially from the BBC that we Americans are borrowing for the off-season and has now become a new favorite. Who Do You Think You Are? helps celebrities research a branch of their genealogy for all the world to share (it airs on Friday 8PM on NBC). My brother is a history professor and he likes to introduce his 101 class to history by asking them why do people research their family historywell, for the most part theyre 18 year olds and they initially say to see if theyre related to someone rich and famous ;). That could be true for some but I think in the process it becomes about the story ~ the story of youhow you fit in the world by way of your ancestor's lives. I think the older you get it evolves more to psychological, philosophical, and spiritual connections. Its interesting to see how the past influenced your presentand how your present may influence future generations of not only your direct decendents but of the world. It turns out the human race is one big family after all!
The big 5th grade project at our elementary school is an immigration project on Ellis Island. My younger daughter is doing it now and its wonderful to see her interest and her initial questioning of unknown relatives and how they have influenced her lifefun for her and for me! Each child needs to begin their research to their great-grandparents if possible. The had to use the Fan Chart found at this link: www.misbach.org/pdfcharts to complete the first step of their project.
Here is my challenge to you:
1) Pick a chart and fill it out to the best of your ability. Hopefully you received this early and youve had time to talk to your family members to get the whole chart filled out. If you want you can check out www.ancestry.com and pay a fee to work on your genealogy.
2) Select a branch of your family (or the whole family if desired) and fill in the details as best you can. My MIL put photos in an album of my DHs family but did not specify that this was grandmother on maternal side ~ so be specific where ever possible and put down important dates: birth/adoption, marriage, death, other factoids. If you know of a special story about someone include that. If you want to do more research then be sure to leave space for anything you want!
3) Now for the look!
A) Since this is a borrowed tv show idea, you will need to borrow a layout ~ select a page that you have marked as a FAVORITE here at SCS and use it (be sure to link us to the original in your description) B) Since this is a Hollywood show be sure to add some blingit can be as little or as much as you want just be sure to tell us about it in your description C) This is a two page spread! The first page will be your chart and you can make it as simple or as elaborate as you like!
I cant wait to hear your story and how your ancestors influenced you! Enjoy the process!

A side note...I have only been scheduled for 1.5 hours before the next challenge but the challenge is for 2 hours. However, since this is a bit detailed challenge it may take you longer than the 2 hours to finish it (well, if you work like me)...it took me 2.25 hours to finish my samples...so I say it only fair that you take the same length of time plus...so 2.5 hour for this challenge :-)
Hi Mary Pat, Bouncing in to check out the fun before I go see movie w/ my hubby. I'll be scrappin later tonight.

I'm a bit confused....2.5 hours to complete the challenge and the deadline is April 30th...today is 23rd.
You have up to a week from the challenge (hence the April 30th date) to complete the challenge. However, you are only 'allowed' two hours total to work on the challenge...it's on the honor system. For instance, I may have time to work on a challenge by pulling paper and some pictures for about 15 minutes but then I have to leave. By the time I get back to it, I then have a total of 1 hour and 45 minutes left to complete it. You can come and go as much as you want on a challenge. I know it's a bit overwhelming at first but you'll get the hang of it. Most people pick and choose their challenges too. Those that are quick as lightening can tend to do all the challenges :-)
I lost track of the time since it's 2 hrs. earlier here in AZ than EST. Just checking in for the first time. I think I'll need some time to get working on this one!

Be sure to go to the Master List...it'll have all the challenges there. I usually 'Copy' and 'Paste' into Word so I can print it out to use during the next week.

The idea is that you try to complete it within 2 hours or in this case 2.5 hours. It's done on the honour system so you have all week to try to do challenges and post. As long as you are getting pictures scrapped, that's all that matters.

I love this show and our history!
How fun...I live near his house ;-) At least you've found out about 'good' relatives...better than finding out something not so good! :-)
Sorry I am just checking in now. And now I am checking out. I have to go to dance class but I'll check back in around 9:30. I was planning on doing this challenge but the picture I want is still at my mom's. She is going to make a print of it for me. It is mt greandfather and his twin brother with ringlets and wearing Christening gowns when they were about 2. That would have been about 1905. They were the first identical twins born in their town and they had interesting lives including being grave diggers. I hope I will get my picture before the end of the week. Enjoy scrapping everyone and I will be back in about an hour and a half.

Today is the tomorrow we worried about yesterday.
this is a wonderful challenge and one I probably won't get to this week but one I need to do for both of my girls.
I do know on my dad's side we are somehow related to Napolean's half brother (or something along those lines) my grandmother was very wise and captured her mother on tape talking about family right before she died, and unfortunately my grandmother died just over 10 years ago, but we still have the tape and all the research she and my Aunt did together, it really is fun to go back.
On my mom's side she has gone back quite a bit too and stopped in recently to a town where all of her father's side was from just a few months ago and got more info, nothing amazing, but certainly interesting.

You go girl! How awesome to already have the paper too!
I would love to find out more about my DH's side of the family. His mother's father was a Native American Indian and many of her relatives still live on reservations out in the Dakotas. I've told him to try and get info on them but no one is ever in any hurry to do anything about it! He's going to invite her and his Stepfather to Mother's Day Brunch so maybe I can get the conversation flowing that way this year!
I know very little about my ancestors as all of them have been deceased for many years.
