Whether you call them acetate cards, clear cards, transparent cards, or floating cards; these cards are simple, classy and most certainly will impress any recipient.
There are 3 main types, they all start with a folded piece of acetate (5 x 8 or 4 x 8 : these are common dimensions, but feel free to deviate from them), scored down the middle. Where you choose to mount the cardstock on them determines what kind of floating card it is. The 3 main types are: inside mounted, outside mounted, and inside & outside mounted.
TYPE 1: Here are photos of an inside mounted card. In this type, there is sort of a mini card on the inside. The outside can be decorated with all sorts of embellishments and designs, including sentiments or stamped images, just no other paper. In this example, the inside card is 5 x 4 , folded in half.
TYPE 2: Here are photos of an outside mounted card. In this type, all decorations and designs are on the outside only. The only paper on the inside is a piece of white or cream paper to allow some place to write a message.
TYPE 3: Here are photos of an inside & outside mounted card. In this type, paper is placed on the inside, as well as the outside. The inside piece adds to the design, in the example it adds a frame to the front part.
There are many creative ways to attach papers to acetate, one could use eyelets, brads, a xyron, or tape! Be creative!
Also, these cards are not the easiest items to photograph or scan. If you have a digital camera, get someone else to hold the card, and set the camera to the macro setting (usually the little flower) if you are using the flash. Or if you have a very steady hand, use no flash. If you scan it, just proceed like you normally would.
If you stamp with stazon and slip, or are just trying to clean the acetate, rubbing alcohol works well.
And remember, put AUGVSNG as your key word!!!
Feel free to ask any questions, and have fun!
*All the samples are up now*
**If you do not have acetate, you could use the lightest, clearest vellum you've got(no colours, otherwise the floating effect is lost). Also, acetate like plastic can often be found around the house**
Well, my brain is wanting to shut down, but I think I can do this....
Well, I'm not at all happy with this, but for a first time effort (and it was fun to try!) I wasn't expecting perfection. That acetate is harder to work with than you think, and none of my hole punches want to work well with it!
This is really neat. I haven't seen these before. I don't have any full sheets of acetate, so I will try it out tomorow after I make an Acetate-Run! Now to catch up on all the challenges.
We did one of these a couple of months ago at my demonstrators card class. I just did one last week and sent to my secret sister for her reveal! I shall try to get one done.
The idea was for the entire card to be made of acetate or vellum. If you have limited acetate, you could make a smaller card.
If all you've got is regular vellum, look at the the 2nd type. It uses cardstock as re-enforcement, it really halps make the card stand.
ahh! Way cool! I will have to attempt tomorrow though since I just took my ambien. I love these, bummer that I am already creatively shot! Oh well, I will look forward to trying something new tomorrow~
Sorry... I don't have accetate that is stiff enough to do a card. I've been cutting up page protectors to use in small windows and shaker cards. But that won't do. Time for another iced tea!
I loved this one too! I thought it would be more difficult but I was even able to combine it with the 2nd bonus challenge! I chose the Inside/Outside style: Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

This was VERY fun. I'd not seen these cards before and they are so cute.....Great challenge. Here's mine ....I'llhave to play around with some more of these.....the tag is on the outside, the larger yellow sheet is on the inside with the punched circles w/flowers. Gallery at Splitcoaststampers
This is only the second or third time I have done floating cards. This one was fun and I had a great time making it. Thanks for the challenge. Here is the link to my card...
I have a little tip for those of you who did the floating cards and had a problem with getting fingerprints on them. Wear gloves! It makes a big difference in keeping them smudge free. I loved this challenge and can't wait to make more of these.
These sound cool. I wish the gallery was working so I could see them. Where do I buy the acetate? Has it been right in front of me at the craft store the whole time? I never noticed it!
