A bunch of you have ordered tons of coasters. So tell me, are they paper, and are you going to stamp on them? What about when they get wet, will that work?
Can you emboss on them and they will be ok?
Are you doing these for gifts, with initials, etc....Enlighten me!
I believe the ones that are being ordered in huge quanities are chipboard coasters (like the kind you can get at restaurants) but are blank. And they are being covered with papers, or painted, stamped, etc. and used as all kinds of altered books, calendars, scrapping stuff, etc.
Oh, they are tiles? I see. I have seen those done. They are so beautiful.
no they aren't tiles ... llike Valerie said, they are chipboard coasters. Sorry I didn't say that! But, you can still pop in coasters and the chipboard ones will show as well as the tiles
I ordered 100 last month and I have only gone through about 1/4 of those - and that's with selling some off to friends. They are great fun to play with - I made a desktop calendar and several picture frames (check out my gallery). I have more ideas churning in my brain but no time to actually develop them - maybe this week.
I have tried several methods of covering these. On the first try, I covered them with designer paper using Royal Coat decoupage medium (like mod podge) using one layer to adhere the paper and two coats on top. I really like how this turned out. On the second try, I brayered classic ink over them and the coverage was sketchy. I used close to cocoa and wasn't sure if I really liked how it turned out until I decided to seal it with the Royal coat - it made it look like leather...pretty cool over all. I have not tried the craft ink yet, although that is my next test, and I think the coverage will be much better than the classic ink - I have 75 more to play with so I might as well experiment.
A friend and I are going in on an order so I will have another 200. I am not sure if I will ever need that many, but I am a classic stamp supply hoarder and the thought that I won't have enough for that perfect project later down the road freaks me out!
A lot of the women that ordered coasters from me are SU(or CTMH or TAC) demos and are using these for projects at stamp camps. So they need a lot for all their customers. Many women are making gifts with them. I figure, if I am going to order something that is so cheap($.03 each) and yet so versatile, I want to order enough the first time that I don't run out right away. I plan on using mine for personal use and for my Girl Scout troop.
I haven't touched mine yet. They are still sitting in a nice, neat pile on my stamping desk just waiting for the inspiration fairy to thwap me over the head!
This is just great! It sounds like such a great giftie, great for like you say, the scouts to make, etc...It is neat to see all the ladies come together too, for huge orders! I see the ordering is on the buy/trade forum. Very cool. I am tempted!!

All together I ordered (and sent out) almost 15,000 coasters. I even had women come back to order more after they got their first ones. I am taking a little break now, before I order more. It was a lot of work, keeping all those orders straight, but it was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed checking my mail box everyday and getting something other than bills!! It was nice knowing I helped out about 75 women!
Okay so where can we purchase these chipboard coasters? I love these coasters!! You ladies all deserve an A+++++++++++++++++++++!!! Very creative people in here. :-D
As to where to get them...well, besides restaurants and pubs ;), if you're looking for a large quantity then a few people ordered from an American supplier (minimum quantity 1000) and then they were splitting the order amongst those who were interested. It looks like no one has any up for grabs at the moment...have a look in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum...here's a link: search results for 'chipboard' in the Buy/Sell sub-forum <--click
I hope this helps! Looking forward to getting some next week or so (through the local scrapbook store at which I sometimes work). =)
3 cents each? wow....I missed the whole discussion / ordering. I must live in a cave.
Nah...it was fast and furious! *lol* I think it started late September...I noticed it a couple of weeks ago. And it didn't take much for someone to order 1000's of coasters for many SCSers! Hehehe. Maybe someone else will start a new order for next week or so.
So, I think I started the frenzy. Sorry!! I ordered over 20,000 coasters all together. It was a little crazy. My last order is coming in on Tuesday. I would be more than willing to pass along the information for ordering these, although I am not sure I want to order more at this time. But I will let you all know if I decide to do another order.
Pfft, dude, you sure did!
speanburg = the coaster lady!
And please tell me you took pics of you amidst the gazillion coasters and an action shot of you packaging them all up? ;)
I have no idea how you did it; you took orders, managed payments, and shipped everything so quickly! You rock!
.:Cris:.
Aw, thanks! It was easier than I expected, and harder than I expected. It was a lot easier when it was just checks and money orders, but the paypal thing took some work!! I finally get some round ones on Tuesday!!
And another FYI...Just wanted to share with any Canadians that I came across a Canadian supplier. Canada Coaster - in Dundas, ON <--click!
I contacted them regarding cost and this was the reply:

We have blank coasters 4 circle and squares, or printed leftovers various shapes and sizes. We sell them to scrapbookers for $20.00 per thousand plus shipping by UPS Standard.
Maybe a Canadian wants to start this up here? It would save on shipping costs!
I checked my game room and my DH had some budlight coasters, like 65 only thing is that they are oval. I'm gonna try those out, when he finds out he's gonna have a cow and a half :p
I'm wondering how in the world do u guys make those holes on the coasters? Am I gonna need a drill as well Sorry I'm a beginnner and very very Dumb. I love this place you gals are super nice and awesome.
I'm dreading if the paper falls of and they see the budlight at school (teacher) I'll die of embarassment!!!! hahahaha too funny sorry I had to say it.
myrnabs...funny story...hehehe.
The Crop-o-dile by We R Memory Keepers works...cuts through it like butter.
If you don't have that or the chance to get or use one, do you have a leather hole puncher (we do! :p ); that would work. Else, maybe use a hammer and nail for now? Or maybe you have an old hole puncher?
You may be a beginner, but I don't agree with your 2nd comment. ;) I don't believe in stupid Q's either...and others will learn from you asking Q's, too! ;)
Hey thanks a million!! Your comment was super nice!!! I was going crazy looking for my Michaels coupon, hehehe ;-) but I found it!!! My mother has this old thing that she used as a button setter(she would sew). I tried it and it worked!!! I'm super excited!! onLY THING is that now I want that pink one (yes I'm crazy). I read on and it can actually do many things!! I may just get that this week. But in the mean time I will use my mother's button setter. WEIRD!!! But one just never knows!!!!!
I'm wondering how in the world do u guys make those holes on the coasters? Am I gonna need a drill as well
I did my first coaster project last night (will try to upload later today)... and at first I was using the drill attachment to my cordless screwdriver (which made a slightly messy hole).
Then I tried the SU! paper piercer from the craft kit... the paper piercer made a nice neat little hole! I threaded some thin ribbon into the SU! craft needle and, with a little tugging, got it to pull through without too much effort.

I am making mini albums as Christmas gifts out of the coasters. I also made a little art book for Rebecca and her friend. I bind the book by making an accordian style binding. I added some pictures of that binding. The first shows the binding without pages, the second with the first page attached. You just keep on adding pages, one ot each mountain/valley fold.
I have some samples in my gallery, but this is my favorite so far.
I was also thinking about using the coaster to make post it note covers. I haven't done that yet, though.
I have read the thread and looked at the pics using these coasters and I'm still confused. Maybe the brain cells that work with chipboard coasters died or something. Are they stamped on? painted? glued? I'm afraid of them I guess.
Just be warned. Once you start using chipboard, you will be addicted. Those coasters are a cheap way to get started. And they are so versatile.
Calendars, Frames, Mini book and post it note covers.....the posibilities are endless.

It looks like I posted at the same time as Beate. I hav enow read your blog for the correct scoring marks.
Thanks for the awesome idea. I just planned out one of my MIL & FIL Christmas presents.
Do you think you can add more pages into the album or would it be too thick?
I think you can add as many as you want. It might just look a bit thick with too many pages.
Add ribbon between the chipboards to keep it from coming apart like a jack in the box, or add a glue dot between the outside of each accordian fold.
