I saw mention somewhere that SU's Basic Black (and one other color) pads are waterproof. I emailed my rep to ask if that meant it's a solvent ink to be used on multiple surfaces, or if it just means it's waterproof on paper so that you can't blend it (and can blend other colors in the lines). I also wanted to know, if it's waterproof, does that mean that the STampin' Write basic black is that same funky ink, or the regular formula.
She emailed that in her personal experience, Basic Black DOES muddy colors and run when 'colored' or 'painted'-in with other colors. She said she's complained to them. She didn't seem to 'get' my question about the markers.
So my question for you -- in YOUR experience, is that Basic Black (not the pigment one) good as a waterproof ink for outline work, and/or for multiple surfaces?
I really don't know what's happened to the Basic Black 'cause it use to be great for watercoloring, etc. but not anymore. Seems like somewhere along the way something was changed about it and it's just not the same 'cause it's not a true black either anymore.
I've been using VersaFine Onxy Black and love it -- it came highly recommended from many stampers on SCS. Really, as great as Stazon is for most things, it's overkill for cardstock. Plus, the VersaFine doesn't stain the rubber like Stazon does.
Our demo told us it is only waterproof on Stampin Up paper. I think she was desperate to sell paper. I used it on Bashful Blue and it ran. I then used it on some scrap white and it ran. I use Brilliance Black and it works great.
Basic Black (and Basic Brown) are formulated to be waterproof only on Stampin Up Whisper White and Very Vanilla. You know that creamy finish on those two papers? That's what interacts with the Basic Black and Brown and makes them waterproof *only* on those two papers. If you could find another paper with that finish, they would probably be black on that, too. (But I've not found another paper with that finish!)
That said, I rarely use the Basic Black and Brown. I usually use Staz-On. I haven't happened upon the other inks mentioned, and I'm not willing to pay shipping on them at the moment. :-)
I made a card just last night and used Very Vanilla cardstock and Basic Black ink. I then coloured the image with my Stampin' Pastels and blender pen. I was disappointed because the black ran, so next time I will use the Staz On pad.
I've had the Memories dye pad for YEARS now, and it's still juicy. And doesn't run. And doesn't sink in the middle. And doesn't fray at the edges. I should mention this to SU!
I agree that Basic Black used to work better than it does these days. I've also noticed that it DOES work better on WW and VV cardstock, for whatever that's worth. ;) I stamped on some cheapy cardstock to save money and it ran. :p
I've heard I should reach for the StazOn, but I don't have any problems when I use Basic Black with SU! cardstock. And I'm an avid watercolorer...

I want to thank you all for the 'second opinions'! I have some StazOn here, and one Archival Ink by Ranger - I seem to get better coLor with that one,but don't recall having seen it sold for a while - this one is OLD.
LynnAnne, you had me really curious, especially after what housefan said about SU! cardstock. So I set out to test StazOn & Basic Black ink on cheap cardstock and SU! cardstock. Here are the results!: http://inkblots.webseitler.com/blog/...ntroversy

Wow, thanks for doing that experiment! It was very enlightening and nice to see the comparison!
BTW, the earlier person who asked the question about markers...if you are talking "journaler" then, yes, it should act in a similar fashion to the Basic Black because it is a pigment ink. I often use my journaler for inking only selected things on my stamps and you have to stamp quickly because it doesn't refresh with huffing like the dye ink in the "regular" marker does!

Not to beat a dead horse, but I second the recommendation of VersaFine Onyx Black.
Ancient Page Coal Black is another excellent choice.
