You're right, it's that ghosted signature you're seeing on everyone's cards these days. Their purpose is to identify the work you post online, for signature's sake and as a distinguishing mark so your work can't be stolen or wrongly credited. The watermark itself is an opaque file (text and/or clipart) on a transparent background that can be layered using a photo editing program over the photo or scan of your card. I make them and there are several others that do too, in addition to a couple tutorials around here somewhere to make your own.
