I just got a Dove Blending Pen. I was hoping that the stuff in side it was the same as Gamsol and I could use it with Prisma Colour Pensils. I was wrong!
Now I'm wondering what to use it for. What's the big deal about blending pens?
I have water colour crayons but no pensils. I may try it with those. I tried it with my SU markers and didn't like the results at all. I only have the Bold Bright colours though maybe it will work better with lighter colours?
I just bought a dove blender pen and now have a few questions. Can you fill it with just water and use it the same as the aqua painter, or is it for use only with a special medium, and if so what do I put into it??
Not sure what a Dove Pen is but I love using my Tombow blender pen...I color with Watercolor pencils and I love the look of going over it with blender pen to give it a more rich even color...I am shocked there isnt a company out there that doesnt make the same type pen and put Gamsol in it....so people can use it with their Prisma color pencils....
There is a refill for the blender pen and also refill tips. If they don't sell it where you bought your pen you should be able to find it online.
The Angel Company sells the Dove blender pen refill and tips.
You have to try it with watercolor pencils as someone mentioned above...I don't think they work as well with the crayons.
But I love the results with the pencil...
And, as someone else mentioned, it works with chalks too.
I have also used it for embossing. I mark where I want powder to stick and go from there.
You can also use it with your ink pads, like a paintbrush. While closed, press the pad to the lid, open it up & use the lid as your "ink well". You can also just pick up the ink right from the pad.

:-D Thanks for all the info, I tried it with both chalk and watercolour pencils. I liked both but prefer the WC pencils for getting more depth of colour, plus I have more colours than chalks. Yeah an excuse to go shopping when the snow stops.

StampGroover - what a wonderful idea - Dove Blender with gamsol. Well get this - based on your idea I took my Dove Blender apart (pull the bottom plug out with pliers). Inside is the filler that holds the blending solution - I tried washing it out but couldn't get rid of the Dove solution, so, I made a new filler by rolling a piece of papertowel and then wrapped it in scotch tape. If you take yours apart you'll see how easy it is.
Then I stuffed the papertowel into the pen and capped it. Take out the point and using an eyedropper, add Gamsol or ultra pure lamp oil or oderless mineral spits into the top and then put in a new blender tip. Works like a charm.
Note that I tried filling it from the bottom and the liquid just pours out the tip. Also, the blending stumps are much cheaper so when working with multiple colors on a large piece I'll still use the stumps, but for a quick hit, this is great. I don't know if this will last, I think it would be great if I could new padding for the inside, but for now, woohoo!!
Stamphappy, what a great experiment. I'm going to try this as well but I will get another pen and mark it just as a gamsol pen (seems like $5.00 is worth this experiment). Just to clairfy I don't mix the gamsol or mineral spirits with water correct?
Okay, they turned the clock ahead on me this morning and I guess I haven't caught up yet (should take about a week LOL) but can anyone tell me where to buy gamsol?? Hopefully I can get it here in Canada too. Thanks
Correct, don't mix gamsol and water. Gamsol is oil based and Dove blending solution is water based and we know that oil and water don't mix. I bought my Gamsol at a local store but its a signature product for Inky Antics.
Great idea on marking the pens I'm going to mark mine also.
Also, time change is great for me beacuse I've never been able to set my body clock since the last change so now instead of waking at 4 am its 5 - Yipee!!

Gamsol is just the product name for Odorless Mineral Spirits, which you can buy in the art department of Michaels and Hobby Lobby. Or wherever art supplies are sold. A big container is only about $4.
