I have been needing a new paper cutter for quite some time, as my old Fiskars rotary trimmer is hard to find replacement parts for now.
After some research, I have decided to go for the Tonic 12" paper cutter. But....I cannot find it anywhere locally. Does anybody know if this item has to be ordered online? My local Joanns and Michaels do not carry it.
Bottom line...I want to find it as inexpensively as possible, and I hate paying for shipping.
Also, is it worth having the big 12" one AND the tiny one, or would that be a waste of money? I'm not concerned with space really, and I do not travel to crops. I am primarily a card maker; don't do much scrapbooking at all.
I have the one with the 6 inch base and have been very satisfied. I do both cards and scrapping, and haven't wished for the larger base (and I have been using it over a year)... I'm sure you will love it! As for the mini, I would get that only if you were carrying it around to crops, etc.
I bought mine at Joann's.com. I did pay shipping which I also hate, but the cutter is so worth it! I stamp and scrap so the 12" base has been great! I might get the smaller one as soon as I save some money.

I primarily make cards and have the 12" Tonic as well. I bought mine at Joanns.com and got it on sale with free shipping. It's easy to use and I like the fact that it's self sharpening. It also has the grid for easy scoring. I use mine every day, all the time. It was definitely a good purchase for me!
I also have the 12" one and LOVE it ... so worth it. Joann has specials with free shipping ... keep an eye out for a special like that. I also am possibly going to by the smaller one in the near future for transportation purposes ... I hate not having my TONIC when I go somewhere ~

I have both the 12 and 6" Tonic cutters and love them! I purchased them from Joann.com I did a check just now though, and cannot find them on their site. I would do a google search for tonic paper cutters and see who carries them. They are the best!

Joanns still carries the tonic (I ordered one from them last night) but I couldn't get the search to work either. I used my friends SU tabletop cutter (made by tonic) last Friday and it was sooo nice!!!

I have the 12 x 12, the 12 x 6, and the mini 6" trimmers. I simply adore them all. I like my 12 x 12 best, but then I have a table dedicated to it and my scor-it and such. I use my 12 x 6 upstairs. I love my 6" mini trimmer, that too was WELL WELL worth the price. You will want the mini trimmer. I love my tonic. When I had a problem with it and contacted them they took care of the problem IMMEDIATELY and handled it over and above what I would have expected.

Well, ladies, I was able to find the Tonic on Joann.com, and ended up placing an order for the 12" one today. I searched high and low before I could locate it, but finally found it. Then....to make it even better, I searched and searched for a free shipping coupon code and was able to find that too! So...I got the cutter 40% off PLUS free shipping! The order had to be over $35 to get free shipping, but that was not hard to do. The cutter itself was nearly that.
I am hoping I like it as well as everybody else, as it will be hard to return. But I'm sure I will love it.

So the trimmer and shipping was $29. Awesome deal!! I had been considering the SU one with the 6" base, but I really wanted the bigger version and you cannot beat this price for a decent trimmer. It's barely more than a Euro-Trimmer.
You will love your Tonic! I bought mine at my LSS (not Michael's or Joann's but I can't remember the name off hand). I have the 12" base model. I do mostly cards too, but I find the larger base measurements very helpful, especially when it comes to cutting multiple cuts from one sheet of cs. Also, it's easier when cutting down 12 x 12 paper too, and it is lightweight but stable. The only problem I have found is it does require some dedicated space in your stamp room. My space is very limited, but I consider my Tonic a MUST HAVE.
Maybe I should look into the smaller size as well, if the price is right I'd snap it up!
I have:
An old-style Fiskars Rotary cutter
A small Fiskars trimmer (like the old SU one)
A Carl DC220
Just purchased the 12" Tonic with 6" base (like current SU)
I love my Fiskars Rotary, but it is not good for small pieces.
The small Fiskars gets dull quickly
The Carl I really don't care for except to cut large quantities of things in half.
So far I really am impressed with the Tonic
Those who love their Carl - I'm amazed. I can't get a straight cut on anything small, it's large, cumbersome, and just not impressive to me.

I couldn't cut small pieces straight with mine since I first opened it!
I really do like the newest addition (Tonic) to my growing collection of cutters. It slices so clean and straight! Great sound it makes when cutting...

Yep, I have to pull out the exacto and glass mat for anything under 2.5 inches....I have the feeling the 6in tonic will join my collection soon also
The siggy is from Flylady (google search if you wish)...who says you can accomplish anything in 15 minutes

Seriously, ladies -- I have just about every cutter that's come along in my quest for the "perfect" one. I own two Carl cutters, various Fiskar and other brand trimmers, and a Genesis. Without a doubt, my absolute favorite is the SU tabletop cutter...and it costs far less than I've paid for three of the cutters I already have.
I became a convert when I tried using a friend's...instantly hooked and ordered it the next day. Gotta love that there are NO blades to replace! Cuts straight and true and I can shave the tiniest bit off. It's light enough and designed to be portable if you wish, but sturdy enough to do serious cutting.
They'll have to take my SU tabletop cutter out of my dying, cold hands!! LOL!
Cutting the smaller pieces with my Carl is hard too...so with the Tonic - can you cut smaller than 2"??? I may need one of these too!
Yes, you can feasibly cut to just smaller then 1", anything smaller then that when I am doing a mat I use my little mini 6 incher. I love my mini trimmer. With the tonics I am able to shave off the smallest sliver, which is nice when I have a piece I cut wrong or just need it a tiny bit smaller.

For those of you who have both the large 12" Tonic cutter AND the mini, do you see a real NEED to have the mini, or is it just nice if you want to travel with it? In other words, can the mini do anything that the larger one cannot do? I appreciate your input.
How small are the measuring increments on the Tonic? Is it like a regular ruler and clear and easy to read to make your cuts? I need to get a new paper cutter, and just found out about the Tonic. I saw a picture of one-- are they sturdy?-- in the pic didn't look as though...

Regarding your Carl, do you use a T-square or quilter's triangle with it? I've found that to help me keep the bar straight and thus, get straighter cuts.

On my 12" base, it has a full ruler, down to 1/16". It also has grid lines on the base incremented every 1/2", to help with keeping long papers aligned all the way down.
They are very lightweight but sturdy at the same time. My 12" base is not exactly portable, but it's light enough to pick up and move around, while heavy enough to stay in place while cutting.

Carl makes a few different lines of cutters. The RT series is smaller. The DC series is professional, heavy duty. There is quite a difference btw the two.

I've had the Tonic with the 12" base for awhile, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!
I just got the mini cutter by Tonic the other day, too. Great for cutting and trimming smaller pieces for card layers, and very portable. Now is a great time to buy from JoAnn's.com. The cutters are on SALE, AND there's a free shipping coupon! Doesn't get much better than that! ;)
