I did a Scrap time episode on this a while back. You can find it under technique archives.

Anyway, you can use them paint in lined stamps. Or on those fabulous new Prima Paintables.

I have an example at the address below. Doesn't show up the shimmer too well but they are wonderful fun.

I put three colours on the background and kept painting them over and over until they "blended" so that there were no hard lines (Ihope!). When it dried I stamped and embossed the flower in black and painted that too.
