Well, hate to say this, but customer service wasn't so excellent yesterday. After detailing everything in an "I need help now" chat to them, their only response was to send me what looked like a canned response to have me send them a video of the problem on a platform I was unfamiliar with.
I ended up having my husband help me after he got home from work. He found a youtube video that showed how to fix the problem I was having. So the end result was they didn't help me, especially when I needed it (I needed to have a card done last night) and instead they gave me a complicated way of not taking the time then to help me.
So, no, I was not really pleased with them yesterday.

I'm sorry you had this problem, and I feel your pain. I am glad (so to speak) that I'm not the only one having problems with customer service. Sometimes I think I am. I hope they can help both of us. I haven't received even an acknowledgment of my email yet.
On a happier note, I found a wonderful video showing how to cut out stamped images with my Cricut, so I'll be using that. I'll reserve my Portrait for Silhouette Studio files and projects that I've already saved. It's so disappointing, but I'm glad I didn't invest in a more expensive Silhouette product.

Glad you were able to figure that out with the Cricut.
I love my Silhouette, and I'm hopeful that this glitch will be fixed in an upcoming update (preferably soon).

Someone from Silhouette answered me, but with the same instructions I've been following. Good lighting, flat surface, yadda yadda. Never addressed the issue of the alignment grid pattern not printing correctly. He said to send him the image I'm using if I continue to have trouble. Oh, well, at least someone answered me.
I imagine their customer service is pretty busy dealing with new owners of the 4 at the moment. All those tools..... Having worked in IT I don't expect great things from free customer service. I suspect troubleshooting the calibration printing issue thoroughly would have been very time consuming for both you and them. If you did decide later you wanted to take it further, perhaps you could get sometime to mail you one. Chances are the calibration pattern is the same in older software. Anyway I'm glad you can do what you want to without getting into a world of IT hurt.
I have watched a couple of the cricut stamp cutting out videos.
The method of using a 1" square you draw to calibrate a scanned-in image (to make a cut that you then stamp on ) is something that could be done on the Silhouette I think, without pixscan. That was in this one, Tiffany :
What I would like to do with pixscan is cut out an image that's already made, such as on scrapbooking paper. That needs the pixscan's ability to put a cut on exactly the right place on the mat.
well I got the pixscan to calibrate after a number of attempts, putting the phone close enough to the paper that the dots filled the entire screen, as advised by Silhouette School.
After a number of tries photographing the mat under good light I still got a blank design.
Guess what? The latest software fixes a bug that made that happen for the Portrait. After updating the software it works at last, using the November 1 Silhouette Studio update.
This update is the one that caused my Silhouette Cameo 2/Studio to not pull my Pixscan mat far enough in for my Silhouette to recognize the registration marks--so now I have to manually set it to each image I want it to cut.

It's become significantly more difficult to reach a person at Silhouette. I used to be very happy with their customer service, but their process now leaves a lot to be desired.

Does anyone know to reach real person at silhouette cameo my cameo has broken
Keep calling. Also, go on social media and ask why they don't answer their call from a desperate customer.
I am very sorry you are going thru this. It is maddening when you can't get help with a broken machine. Been there, done that. Hopefully your warranty of one year has not expired😥.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
Hope you get some help❤
I've not gotten either machine yet, but I'm wondering for those of you who have both, or had both, if the curio will do most all that the cameo will do...except maybe size wise? Trying to figure out which to aim towards getting. Love the idea of being able to emboss, but want to be able to cut out designs and use the pixscan mat to cut out stamps too. I know this is a cameo thread...but thought I'd ask, in case anyone has both.
Hi Deb, I don't have a Curio, but did research them...what I found is that the embossing is not that great on paper or cardstock, so I ended up getting a Silhouette Portrait as I don't need a 12" cutting width. I suggest you look at some examples of work produced by the Curio to make sure you know what you would get - it can only emboss along a line. If you want to produce a raised area, there is a method shown on the "Clever Someday" blog, but it is quite involved. Amazing flat embossing with a Curio
Thanks Jenny, I actually did see that the other day, and yes it looked a bit complicated...but maybe doable, once in a while. It's to bad it's that hard to get a good embossing though. *sigh* I don't know when I'll be able to afford one, so I have time to keep looking at them. Thanks for your thoughts!
Anyone experiencing extremely long delays in your library syncing? I've never ever had this problem, but most of my images say "queued" or they have a number/number. I'm at a loss to figure out what is happening. I'm signed in as well. Also it says it's syncing from 5/22/2021 which is weird because it's 5/29/2021 as I type this!
And no answer from Silhouette til after Monday.
thanks for your help!
Kathy
Hi. I’ve been looking at a Silhouette Cameo 4 for card cutouts instead of dies and a die machine. One concern I have is getting the rounded edges you get with a die cut machine. Is there a way to get rounded edges with a Silhouette? Or are the edges of a cut sharp like you’d get cutting with scissors?

It doesn't round over the edges like dies. And I have not seen anyone tell me how to get that look.

QueenPam,
Thanks for the feedback. I was afraid that was the answer.
Since I’m a retired software engineer, I would be very comfortable using a Silhouette. And I like it’s massive flexibility. Unfortunately, it doesn’t do rounded edges (which look good), embossing, and probably some other techniques that I’d like.

Actually, you could round the corners of the cards with a Silhouette Cameo. In the (optional) Deluxe edition (not sure if it's in the basic, though) there is a rounded rectangle. You choose it from the Drawing tool that shows a rectangle icon, but hover over that icon and other shapes pop up. You can also adjust the curve of the angle.
Does anyone use a printer for the Silhouette Cameo Print-n-cut feature? I used to have a great printer, but it died (Kodak), and right now I'm using a used printer from my mom. I want color, preferably an all-in-one, to print 12x12" paper, since my Silhouette is that size.
There are printers out there, but i have a nice hefty amount in my Amazon gift card account, so I'd like to purchase from there.

I have an old Wide Format Epson (up to 13 x 19 inches) with a CIS (Continuous Ink System). I don't recommend it. It clogs all the time.
Thank you. I've been reading reviews and such about all the printers I'm interested in, but haven't really narrowed it down. Right now there are a lot of 'out of stock' printers probably because of "supply chain issues."
I'll find one eventually, but until then, I'll just stick with NOT doing Print & Cut on my Cameo!
I have a Canon Pixma G3260 with tanks that I currently use for print and cut. I like the tanks but it prints slow. Still I'm happy with it.

This is the exact model I ordered! It should arrive Tuesday.
I tried working with the Epson Printer I got from my mom...installed all new cartridges & cleaned the print heads & performed a few tests. I was able to print out about 4 decent photos before it decided to not print well (lines missing in the photos.). So that printer is now in the to go pile.
I just found out today that my niece is going to give me her cameo 3 cause it's got an issue holding the mat, and she doesn't have time to see if she can figure out how to fix it or not...so my first question is, can I buy off brand mats on amazon, or should they really be the silhouette brand? She said her mats aren't to good anymore, so thought I'd start out with new. Also, any idea on what I should look into doing first to hopefully fix the issue. I know nothing about using one yet, always wanted one but just never got around to finding money for one...so am hoping I can fix this one! LOL I think mostly she just wanted a different kind...so she didn't try to fix this, but I'm really hoping it is an easy fix, so I have one to play with! thanks so much! I haven't had time yet to delve into figuring out what could be wrong, she just offered it to me today...and I babysit my nieces, so just don't have a ton of time these days. Looking forward to my summer break, so maybe I can get some playtime in...and learn how to fix and then use my new toy! LOL
Deb, this is probably an issue of the cutting bar lever on the right side of the machine not locked and/or the rollers are not in the proper location for your mat size. There are lots of youtube videos addressing the issue. I would recommend that you use silhouette mats to learn your new machine. With off brand mats, you sometimes have to know whether to place material a little more to right or up or down on that particular mat. You can go ahead and download the silhouette studio free version from the Silhouette website and begin playing and also download the free weekly files from Silhouette.
When you check it out, let me know what you found was the cause. Hope this helps.
Ok, thanks so much Kathy! I'll order a mat, so when she comes for a visit...or we manage to get there I'll have it, and try to remember to let you know if I figure out what is wrong. Hopefully it is that simple, I did see a video about that last night. LOL I don't know that it will be real quick, that I get it...just depends, as she is super busy all the time with working and her family, and I seem to be busy also babysitting her baby sisters so time just flies by and we talk on the phone, but don't see each other as much as would be nice to. *sigh* Guess thats what happens when kids grow up and make their own family. LOL Thanks for your help!
I posted this question under general stamping, but someone suggested here might help me find my answers.
I have a used only once silhouette Portrait 1, with accessories, that I got in 2014. I have found that Silhouette absolutely has no support for this older unit. My questions:
1) Does anyone know how to get the old driver for this old unit?
2) Since I have accessories (pens, blades, scrapers, mat, etc), should I just buy a new one? Or should I sell them? Will anyone want these unused accessories?
3) Since I didn't find working with the unit easy back then, should I switch gears and get a Brother Scan N Cut or a Cricut? (The only things I want to make are some signs with letters about 2 inches tall and to cut out my stamped images that I don't have dies for.)
My Portrait 1 stopped talking to the PC when I got Windows 10. At that time they had an update available that might help, but you needed a Windows 7 pc or older to use to get the update into the Portrait...I wanted the autoblade function anyway so I moved to a newer model.
They changed the blades so I think yours wouldn't work on a newer model, on the current models you can buy new I mean.
The pixscan mat would be ok on a later Portrait.
I'm not sure about the pens - maybe they wouldn't fit a newer machine but if they're that old they might be dried up - easy to check.
The hook, scraper etc could be used with any type of cutting machine.
As you had trouble before, consider finding out how you can get a class on whatever machine you decide to buy. Or pick the machine that someone local to you teaches. Then you are more likely to get enjoyment and use out of whatever you buy.

...
I got my niece's cameo this last weekend, didn't have a LOT of time to play with it, but cleaned it real good and put a new mat and blade in it, and did my first cutting! I used a heavier cardstock, so it didn't totally cut all the way though everywhere, not sure what setting to use. I used heavy cardstock setting...but it looks like they consider 80lb cardstock to be heavy...I don't. LOL
What I was using was cheaper 110 lb cardstock to practice with...my best heaviest is 120, so...what setting would I use to get it to cut it all the way through, ALL THE TIME, for my 120 lb cardstock? Any ideas?
So excited to hopefully find time to play more with it soon...so if you could let me know what material and settings you use for the heavy cardstock, that would be great! Thanks so much!!
For heavy cardstock (I think 100 lb has been my heaviest) I always choose two passes (double cut) and I turn on the overcut feature in the cut settings. That is, I check the box next to the little triangle shape in the cut settings. Test cuts on scraps of what you are cutting are helpful. When you find the sweet spot write down the settings for future reference or save the custom cut setting in your menu in SS.
