I am not really much of a color in stamp image kind of girl (mostly because I do not have many stamps yet!). I am REALLY into color matching and currently getting the color families of SU and matching paper. So far I only have the pastels! Its a slow road!!
I would really like the SU markers but at $125 I won't be able to get them for a long while seeing as collecting the stampin spots are taking some time!
Anyways to get to my point, I would like some cheap (really cheap!) markers to use until that time. Like I said they won't be used too often. And I would like a range of colors straight away. Should I just buy a cheap set of kids color pens? I really don't want to spend much seeing as I will eventually (hopefully) be getting the SU ones!
I bought an inexpensive set at Joanne's -- their own store brand. They are good enough for my purposes. I also don't use markers very often.
But, since you are investing in the SU color families for ink and paper it would be really nice to get the pens to match. Do you have a group of friends who might do a Pen Share? In other words, four or five gals pool their money to buy a complete set. Then they split the set equally..... someone has to make a list and print copies of who got which colors. Then a few months later you again pool your money, buy another set and split it up. Eventually, everyone has an entire set, without having to pay for the whole thing in "one fell swoop."
BTW... does anyone know what the heck a "fell swoop" is?
I did'nt think I'd use my markers but I use them everytime I sit down to stamp. Worth the money. I say get that first. ;) Any other marker would be a waste of money. ;)
You don't have to buy all the markers at one time. If you're really into color matching, I'd go with the SU markers. The Tombows are good and may be the same but the colors don't match.
I bought the markers all at once but added the ink pads and reinkers on to all of my orders. At roughly $2.50 per marker, you could add on a marker here or there to all of your orders and you'd eventually have them all.

Thats a cool idea about the markers. Will have to see if I am convince some other people!
Thank you for all the replies. I would love to get them now but do not have that kind of money at the moment especially as I really want the spots, paper and reinkers and markers and ... and !!!! lol!!
I like my SU markers. I do use them a lot. Remember you can also use them to color directly onto the stamp. In away, you are getting all your ink pads at once if you have all of the markers.
I also have 50 Copic Markers. They are fun in a different way. I suppose the SU markers are more versatile. I like having all the toys to choose from!

I got the set of 36 Bic permanent markers yesterday for 20$. I got them due to a tutorial posted here on how to get copic-like results with them. The tutorial is posted here in the forums, you should be able to find it. I used the technique last night and I'm really happy with the way it turned out. A great compromise instead of spending 3-5$ per marker.
I have an extra set that I received for my birthday that is unopened & was going to put on ebay, contact me if your interested, way cheaper than SU. I luv mine & their well worth the money.

From World Wide Words:
The phrase is one of those fixed expressions that we hardly think about most of the time. It means all at once, suddenly. It’s been around in the language for at least 400 years. Shakespeare is first recorded as using it, in Macbeth: when Macduff hears that his family has been murdered, he says in disbelief:
All my pretty ones?
Did you say all? O hell-kite! All?
What, all my pretty chickens and their dam
At one fell swoop?
The image that Shakespeare’s audience would have brought to mind at once was a falcon plummeting out of the sky to snatch its prey (like the kite for example, which was a bird of prey long before it became an aerial machine). You might guess that fell has something to do with fall, but it hasn’t. It actually means some thing of terrible evil or deadly ferocity.
Before I bought the SU markers I bought a few cheap sets of Marvy Le Plume markers at Michael's with coupons. Reg. price is 19.99 for a set which ended up costing 10.00 with 50% off coupons. They worked fine & I used them all the time till I finally bought the SU markers a year later, & I luv them! I also use Prisma pencils & Koh-I-Noor pencils with OMS & luv those as well for coloring. HTH
Ladies as far as markers go, I use the LePlume markers. I have all the sets of colors. I think there are more colors than Stampin' Up offers. The LePlume sets are only $19.99 currently and I've found them in both AC Moore and Michaels. They work fine for me and I can always find the colors I want to go with what paper I'm using. Nothing has to be an exact match....that would be boring, to me. The LePlume markers work for me just fine!
For other coloring, I use the Derwent water color pencils, Prismas pigment pencils and chalk pencils. These I can all purchase in my local AC Moore or Michaels stores.
I did purchase a set of 12 Copics, but they are not for me. I am not that much of an artist, so they are out of my ability. I know they are very popular with many, but not for me. I will use them for coloring on other items instead of paper where blending/shading is not necessary.
What about buying them one family at a time, instead of the whole set? That way you can focus on your colour families (for example, the Soft Subtles) to go with the paper you currently have?
I have some SU and some of the Marvy and Tombow. I think that so far I like the Marvy best - lots of colour choice, and I prefer the ultra fine tip point to the fine point my Tombow have. I got mine 50% at Michaels. They can also be used to colour on your stamps.
Good luck deciding! I know it is hard when there are so many wonderful and fun products out there to choose from! That is half the fun of this hobby for me!
