Ok how do you guys make these blend? I see Kates cards and i can't get markers to do anything. If you hold them too long they seem to bleed. I just use the SU white cardstock and tried to use the new cardstock at papertrey and it acts the same way with markers. Are you blending with pencils and then doing the edges in markers? Any help on blending with these things would be great.. TIA
I have better luck with Georgia Pacific cardstock (the kind from Walmart). Whisper White is too smooth and the ink wants to puddle on it.
Here's how I blend with Copics:
Color in with the lighter color. Take the next darkest color and add your shading. Take the lighter color and go over the edge where the darker meets the light color and they blend like magic.

Unless you use a matte paper, the marker will show through the other side of the paper and you will need to layer it before adding it to a card.
Always start with a lighter color. Scribble some color on a palette. You can pick up the color with either the clear blender or with the color marker you began with. The marker tip will not be stained. The color will all come off.
If you only have a few colors, you can do your main coloring with the markers and then add shading with colored pencils.
I think you jsut need to practice coloring to get the feel ofthe markers before you actually color an image. You know how the teachers used to tell you to color lighter to darker back to lighter with the same crayon. I like the comment on using the blender that way you can only pick up the amount of color you want.
I hear the word Gamasol or something like that on the blogs, I think it is a product made for blending colors either pencils or markers, but I have never used it.
I also would try water color paper. I just get the cheaper pads at walmart and cut them to smaller sizes. sometimes the wetter markers work better on a more textured surface. When I feel I've gotten the hang of it better, then I get the more expensive paper.

So when you do that... the darker color doesn't get on the lighter marker?
Great thread. I'm subscribing because I have Copic markers coming and would like to have a clue how to use then when they get here! I have a few Copic markers already, but none similar in color that I could practice with to blend...so for now I'm just reading and waiting!

Nope.
You can also color your image in a lighter color and then use Primacolor pencils for shading. Then I go over it again with the lighter color and the pencil will blend (like it does with gamsol).
Or you can scribble on a piece of acetate and pick up color that way.

This is such great information Jeanne! Keep that great advice comin'!!! Is there anything that you would like to share with us that you wished someone had shared with you when you first got your markers?

I just got mine
Up until a couple weeks ago I had 12. Just a mishmash of colors that I picked up to try. I don't have any real advice at this point because I'm still learning myself. I would love to take a class somewhere.
Probably the best advice I could give is to get a few and sit down and play with them.
The inks I like to use are Palette and Versafine. With Versafine you have to let it dry (or zap it with a heat tool). The paper that I like the best (at least so far) is the cheap white Georgia Pacific CS from Walmart. I was told that Wassau Exact White Matte CS works well too but I haven't been able to get my hands on any yet.

Thanks Jeanne for the comments on the coloring. I have a mix right now which i paid obviously alot for but it doesn't look like many compared to the ones on your blog. Wow that's alot of markers. I think my problem is i was thinking like i do with my prismas and gamsol (pencils) darker outside. I also don't have like all the shades leading up to say a darker pink. I was looking at where you said you got yours at and may order the 3 sets she has listed. Also I love SU but their black in smears so getting the other kind you mentioned. I also read somewhere Palette is good so may get some of that also. Boy remember when you thought hmmm i think i am going to make my own cards and save myself some money.... hahaha

Ain't that the truth. I've probably spent more $$ in the last two years on my hobby than I spent at Hallmark my ENTIRE life!!! But Hallmark never gave me this many friends and personal satisfaction!
This is great! Lately, coloring my work has been my favorite. I've even started picking my stamp sets based on weather or not it can be colored or not. I don't have any of the markers or pencils, other than my SU sets, but I am working on getting the primacolor pencils, but now I see about these Copic markers and now I want them too. What is happening to me?

I've been seeing beautiful work with these markers and have a couple of questions. Are you buying the original or sketch markers? Also, I saw 72 colors available at My Favorite Things. Jeanne-Did you buy all of your markers there? Her prices are better than elsewhere, but I didn't see as many colors as you have. Thanks.

I bought the Copic Ciaos from My Favorite Things. They are round instead of flat (a little bigger around than a SU marker) one end is a brush tip the other is a chizzle tip. They are refillable & the nibs (tips) are replaceable.
She special ordered the other 2 sets for me

Thank you! What awesome info!! I never thought of using the prismacolored pencils with them! What a great idea!
Thanks so much for all the great information here. I am loving the Copic (but only have 6 so far!) And need to practice more with the pencils. Thanks for all the tips!
