It depends on the paper you are using and the type of printer you have as to how well your pictures will look. (I do recommend using paper made by the same company as your printer. Especially if your printer is an Epson you should use their paper....I speak from experience on this one. I tried other brands. My pictures just didn't look as good. Most HPs will look okay with store brands but HP paper and Kodak are your best bet. I don't have any experience with Canon or Brothers so I can't help you if either printer is what you own. Believe it or not, the paper really makes a huge difference.)
The size of the photo really won't matter as to what DPI you use. If I am framing my photos, I will print at the highest DPI. For scrapbooks and sharing, I will use the Normal setting - usually 600 DPI. If your camera is at least a 6 MP camera, Normal should be sufficient. Play around a bit to make sure you are happy with the output. That is really what matters most. If they look good at Normal, then I say go for it. Ink is expensive, even in the newer printers.
