Thanks; I'm going to look into that. My MM is good, but I still feel there's room for improvement.
The only complaint that I have is to cut thin pieces of card stock I have to do reverse measuring. If this bothers you, you might not like this cutter. It is pretty heavy so it has a permanent place on my cutting table and I do not move it. I have a 6" Tonic cutter that I use for trimming some small pieces.
Thanks everyone for your advice-- I have has the fiskars (didn't like) I have a Carl-- hard to find replacement blades- i also have the Purple Cow combo one-- I like the guillotene style-- but it doesn't cut straight at all! and the rotary side is hard to use! I am leanning toward the Tonic! thanks again for all the advice
Today I decided to buy a paper trimmer and went to my lss where I found Tonic, Fiskars and Carl.
One of the staff took me into their lab and showed me how the different trimmers worked.
She also told me a little tidbit when I expressed an interest in the Tonic Trimmer. Apparently the man that made or makes the Tonic, was a former employee of Fiskars and thought their product could be improved .....and hence "the Tonic". I have not used it yet, but saw a lot of recommendations here sooooooo if I dont like it...... its all your fault.lol
My closet looks like a paper trimmers graveyard. I have bought Fiskars, Cutterpede (?), Carl and the Tonic 12" is the best of them all. This is my 3rd one though. On the first one, the 2 measuring gauges didn't match up so my cuts were always about 1/16" off. I called and talked to Steve Ramsey. He had a new one sent with a label to return the old one in the box. On 2nd one, the screw that attached the arm became loose so called again. Steve said there is a spring that you can't see that must have broken. He, again, had a new one sent and no label was sent so threw the 2nd one away. (Packed it in a box so it wasn't in the garbage with the cutting arm free to swing loose and hurt someone.) I haven't had a Tonic cutter a year yet but was very impressed with the customer service. I do like this cutter. My friends that come over and have used it also like it.
It has a 5 year guarantee against faulty parts or workmanship.

Reason: add info
My husband just bought a dahle 440 for me for my birthday. I, like many others have a trimmer graveyard. Trimmers make or break your project. I hate kitty wompas cuts. grrrr.
The 440 is heavy duty. It can cut at least 3 layers of PTI cardstock.(know this for a fact). I can also shave off slivers, I mean slivers easily. It is wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Pricey but totally worth every penny. I was tired of going thru trimmers.
Hope this can help someone...I know I researched this for what seemed like forever.
Hi all - I purchased a Making Memories 12x12 trimmer about 6 months ago and loved it for awhile. Now it makes this terrible noise when it cuts, and I can barely push the blade along. A friend of mine is having the same problem, but she uses her much more (and it started making noise earlier). I loved it at first, but am so disappointed that I might even write to them, which I have never done.

I second this. I went through no fewer than THREE MM 12x12 trimmers.
My problem isn't as much noise as jagged edges, though.
B/C everyone here seems to love it so, I was surprised when the first one broke. I emailed MM; they offered a token "fix" which had no affect at all. They also gently indicated that it was probably my fault for cutting too many sheets of paper at one time. I accepted the blame (doubtful, but I'll take the blame one time) and bought another.
I was VERY careful with the second, and it broke even sooner - same problem, feels like the blade is off-track when it isn't. It happens suddenly - I had finished trimming one sheet of CS and when I tried to use the trimmer again a few minutes later - broken.
Desperate for a trimmer, I ended up with a third. Same story - blade dragging and very rough edges.
I'm currently using the largest, heavy-duty Fiskars I could find. I'm not a big fan of Fiskars trimmers (bad track record there), but at least they last longer than my MM did.
Question for those of you that have a Making Memories trimmer... does it make a high pitched noise when you cut with it? My cutter is a few months old. My daughter was using it one day and it was making a lot of noise. When I went to find out what was wrong with it I ended up breaking the plastic ruler on it. I contacted MM and they replace the ruler. Now it is starting to make the noise again and I am afraid the ruler will break again. I would like to know if this is normal or not. Other than the noise, I really think this is a nice cutter.
Hi everyone that has the MM Trimmer. If yours makes a squeeking noise when you use it, check todays threads for a post I made about eliminating the noise with a tiny dab of 3-in-One household oil. Works like a charm.
Cheers, Annette
