Is this the same as odorless paint thinner? That's all they had at Hobby Lobby and Micheal's didn't have anything like OMS at all. I hated to buy it for $8 if it wasn't what I needed.
Also, I've seen some posts on blogs that they have a glass jar with a "push top" that they use to keep their OMS in. Does anybody know what this is called exactly? I'd like to get one of those too. If you know of an online resource that would be terrific!
I use Daler*Rowney "Low Odor Thinners" that I got in the art (tiny) section of Walmart (near the piece goods). It was >$3 and I have been using it for 6 months and I am not half way through it. I am happy with this product.
I keep mine in a small tupperware container with a sponge in the bottom. I press the stumps against the sponge to dampen them. Got this idea from Asela Hopkins (queen of coloring). It works great--I don't worry about spills.
YES the Oderless Mineral Spirits is Paint Thinner. I just picked up the Mona Lisa Oderless Paint Thinner from Michaels in a small jug for $4.99. It was by the painting stuff. I then bought a small glass jar in the same isle and just put a piece of sponge in the bottm with the OMS poured onto it. Works perfect.

Gina K sells the jars in her shop HERE, (currently backordered) but if you don't mind plastic instead of the pretty glass, they're available at Sally Beauty Supply. Here's a link to a picture:
Sally doesn't offer them online, only in the store - but while you're there, they also have white nail blocks for distressing and cosmetic applicators to use with your pastels . . .
I use baby oil. It allows you to blend the same as Gamsol or OMS because it breaks down the wax in the colored pencils. But baby oil doesn't have the the health or fire risks that OMS or Gamsol does. Also much cheaper and no special storage needed.

also...I bought my artist jar(plastic) at Michaels and it came with sponges....but this was a couple of years ago.....I bought 2 and have been using them ever since. I buy my Gamsol from Dick Blick by the quart. I've never had an issue with odor or fumes and I work in an enclosed space...I have a ceiling fan, but no open windows. I do understand alot of people say they are sensitive though. That's another reason why Gamsol is better than some of the other brands...its artist grade.

Has anyone done a side-by-side comparison using both baby oil and OMS? I just bought a bottle of the Mona Lisa stuff, but was mildly horrified after I read all the warnings on it. I've only used it once since I bought it. I would love to use the harmless baby oil instead.
Also, what is the best paper to use with baby oil or OMS? I tried it out on 140 lb watercolour paper, but that didn't blend as well as I'd hoped. Maybe I did not use enough OMS?
Hi, i am new to prisma coloured pencils and recently received 72 as a gift, i sat at the computer all afternoon and read all your posts on using them and ran out to my local art supply store to by mineral spirit. I have just tried to use it with my pencils and am really really disappointed with the effect i have achieved, what have i done wrong, my colour has not blended, it has just changed colour a bit....I am just using ordinary cardstock, should i be using a shiny card maybe....The art supply store has sold be odourless solvent as i live in australia - they said it was the equivalent... Maybe it's different...:( :( :(

I used Stampin' Up whisper white. It works great!

I have done a side by side comparison of gamosol vs. baby oil. I could not tell a difference. I just use the white card stock that Walmart sales. I also took it to my card club and people could not tell which was which. There was a great thread this week that had a link to some wonderful tutorial on utube, but I didn't book mark them. Maybe some else know the site.
What can you use for stumps? I live in rural Colorado and can't get to an art store for a few days. I already have the pencils and would love to try the technique this weekend.

Note: the following is REALLY lame but for those of us who live 100 miles from nowhere....
When I first started I used q-tip brand swabs with the cotton removed and used sandpaper to get a point. It is crude--but it worked, and let me color untill I could make it to a populated area ;)
Thanks for the idea of putting a sponge in the bottom of the container to prevent spills. I am the queen of spills. I'll have to add them to my growing list to pick up this weekend.
I gotta tell ya'll..... I'm so excited! I was visiting Gingerwood last night and someone on there was saying that they used the Copic colorless blender pen to blend their prisma pencils. Oh................My.................Gosh!! It works awesomely! I have never been happy w/ my blending w/ the gamasol, but this just worked so nice and easy. Give it a try, I think you'll be pleasently surprised!

Hi Lesly ...
This is one of my all-time favorite techniques .. This technique is SO satisfying to those of us who LOVE to COLOR. ;)
That being said ...
* locally I can buy "stumps" at "Aaron Brothers" (frames & art supply chain store). (They also carry Prismacolor Pencils in sets & individually).
* locally I can sometimes find stumps at Hobby Lobby.
* Online or at conventions I can purchase Odorless Mineral Spirits and stumps at Gina K. Designs, OR I can purchase Gamsol and stumps at Inky Antics.
* locally you can find odorless mineral spirits at art supply stores, Hobby Lobby, occasionally at Michaels (not consistently). This is in a a quart or half-quart can that is difficult to handle on a project-use basis. Sooooo ... you need a different container such as mentioned in previous threads. Gina K sells a cool "dispenser". The Gamsol is packaged in a sponge-top dispenser.
The choices are definitely 'out there' and available to the online shopper! Good luck! ;)
I have tried OMS, Gamsol and baby oil. They all work the same. Keep in mind any liquid which breaks down the wax will work for this technique. They are all equally good for blending, but Gamsol has health and fire risks so I use baby oil since it's the safer choice.
If you don't have a craft store nearby, you can buy the blending stumps on line at www.inkyantics.com
What ink are you using? I use Staz-on to prevent smears.
I'm wondering about the oil residue as well, although I have experienced some oily type residue with the Gamsol as well. I'm thinking about picking up a small bottle of baby oil to experiment with today.

okay so I tried both and I'm disappointed actually...I thought it would be okay with the whisper white but it smeared the ink even tho I let it sit for 10 minutes...I should have heat set it but I didn't...I tried it on the watercolor paper...don't even bother...it turned out crappy I didn't even bother finishing the image...it left oily residue and it balled up too much...probably because it absorbed it too quickly...
In any case...I did only use the versafine and not any other ink so the stazon may be the better choice for the whisper white....if anyone else has any other suggestions or experience I'd like to know too what paper you use and what black ink
I use Taltine which I bought at my local Hardware store. It is odorless and it comes in a small bottle that is only a little over 2.00 here so in your area I would think that it would be pretty cheap.
