Default New pads vs. Re-ink?

When I first started stamping many years ago, I bought the whole set of Earth Element stamp pads. Those were the old design of pads, not the current flip kind. They are just starting to run out of ink (after all these years!), and I'm undecided whether to re-ink them or replace them with new ones. Any advice?

I also began with the EE pads/old design. I replaced them a few at a time when the new style came out and don't regret it. The larger pad surface makes it easier to ink up my larger stamps. I was able to sell my old style to a beginner who didn't envision ever using large stamps.

I would say new pads, if you can afford it that is. I LOVE the flip top design. They stay juicy and are just super easy to use. I also like the grips on the side, I think that was part of the new design too.

Personally any pads I have when they dry out, I replace them. I don't use re-inkers for that purpose.

I feel ink pads aren't meant to last for ever as they become worn and change shape due to your individual style of stamping.

Ink pads are readily available in various stores, so I just as soon replace them after they dry out or the pad becomes worn.

Gosh, I don't know...I'm NOT bashing SU please understand, but I personally don't like those flip top pads. Maybe it's just me, but I seem to have a terrible time opening and closing them! So....before you replace all of your old pads with these, make sure you've tried the flip top ones and like them!

If they are not worn, I'd say re-ink! I personally love the flip tops. The lids are nice and tight and it helps to keep the ink from drying out. Of course the upside down pad helps to keep the pad inked also.

didnt they also change the inks just a bit though when they went to the new style? there fore the colors may be off just a bit if you re ink the old ones.

i thought i remember they changed the ink formula or something to improve as well?

I would tell you to re-ink (and best yet - if you have a friend with the reinkers share)... Then spend your money on something else you want instead of investing in a bunch of new pads!!!

I'd say re-ink. Save your money and use it on something you want. No sense tossing something and wasting resources just to get the new in thing. If they're still in good shape and work, then why not use them. And as another poster commented, I'm another one that doesn't find the flip type ink pads all that user friendly.

I think only Basic Black changed. At least, that's the only color that I've noticed a change in.

I had most of the old style pads and gave them to a friend once I replaced them with the new ones. I have to admit, I was glad to get rid of them as I was sick of having to try to transport them (to crops and such) in a way that they would not fall open.

As for the OP, if you're fine with your old pads, then keep them and reink them. Mine still worked fine, I just became a demo (way back when) got a full set of the new ones at 30% off plus one color family free (the demo sign up deal at the time included a free family of pads). So, I learned to use the new pads. They took a bit of getting used to, but are fine. The old ones though are easier to do the smoosh technique with (smoosh the lid onto the pad to get ink on the lid and use that ink for coloring).

I'd re-ink them too. If you want to make sure they stay closed, put a rubber band around them.

IMO, I liked that the pads in the old style containers stayed flat better. Many of the flip-top pads I have are sunken in in the middle, making good coverage difficult. If your old ones are still even, keep them!
