Nestabilites

Got my cuttlebug last week and now I am ready to take the plunge and buy a set of nestabilites. Which ones do you think I should get first? Round, square, oval and what size? I am so confused.

Another question, I see a mat mentioned, what is it and do I need it?

I (finally!) got my set of rectangles from CutatHome. I'll probably get the circles next.

You don't need a mat to cut the shapes, but you do need it to emboss.
