As far as I know, they're the same as the white eraser - but they don't get that "dirty" look, so they're always nice and clean. Aside from the always-clean look, they're nice if you want to have an eraser for a very specific use (ex. a special eraser to use on watercolor paper) that performs the same way a white one does.
At least with the Pearl erasers - remember the Pink Pearl we had back in school? - there's a difference. White leaves more eraser dust, is the least expensive of the three, is a bit crumbly. Black is the most expensive, leaves little dust and is more ergonomic.
I don't know if other companies' black erasers are manufactured from the same materials or not.
