Default how to clean sponge daubers?

I have some sponge daubers that have been used with pastel chalks -- can they be cleaned? I tried water, and also hand soap and water.... both made it so no color would transfer off the dauber (so it is perfectly functional), but it still remained stained (so its not all that pretty -- I don't care for my use, but this is for customers)
any ideas on how to clean, or should I just follow the "well used is well loved philosophy?)
thanks
mary alice

Default Sponge Daubers

I think the well-used and loved philosophy is best. I have a separate dauber for each basic color so they don't look quite as messy.

Yep, that's what I do too. I use my Dymo labler to identify each one so I don't mix the colors. They store fabulously in the SU! plastic containers made for alphabet or number stamps...you know the ones with the row dividers.

I use one dauber for similar colors. After I'm finished, I wipe it until no more color comes off. When it gets really, really gross, I rinse it under hot water and start all over again until it starts to get little pill-y things.

Washing will make them fall apart shortly. One for each color. I have had mine for nearly 10 years and use them heavily. I have only replaced a few that fell apart from use. The dirtier they are, the better results I get. They blend better when old.

Wow, Lynn - great idea about storing them in the slotted boxes! I do label mine - what would I do without my Dymo? LOL

When I was at a scrapbook/stamp expo last year, I bought (for $5) a plastic container which was marketed specifically for holding sponge daubers. It is actually the same type container that holds square, mini stamps that I bought at AC Moore. There are 40 little spots in the box.
