Without going through a gazillion messages I thought I'd post a question here. Does anyone have the Gypsy and do you like it? I had toyed with the idea of buying one but now I hear the local stores are no longer carrying it. Is there a reason? My daughter said she saw some for 19.99 and at that price it makes me wonder if they are even going to make it anymore. Thanks Zipper28
I think they upgraded it or something. Can anybody back me up on that? They were selling the older models cheap. My friend has an older one, and she loves hers. She's had it several months now, and she uses it a lot.
I bought one shortly after they came out and I have to admit, I don't really use it as much as I thought I would. And of course, I kick myself because I paid WAY too much for it compared to what they are running now. I think you can find them for around $100. I guess I don't work on scrapbook stuff as much when I am sitting and waiting for kids to get done with practices, etc as I thought I would.
I held out for years not wanting to get a Cricut. Before Christmas, the sale at Michaels was too good to pass up, so I got it. A month later, the sale at Michaels was also too good to pass up, so I bought the Gypsy. It took me a while to figure it out but there are a lot of how-to videos on Youtube. Now I wouldn't use the Cricut without the Gypsy. I can plan the whole mat layout. I like being able to weld letters together, adjust the size to what ever I want, rotate it, hide parts of it that I don't want cut, control where the Cricut cuts, and get as much cutting on a piece of cardstock as I can. It was worth my money.
I have one and must say that I haven't used it as much as I thought I would like the OP said. I am taking a class this Sat so hope this encourages me to use it. I do watch YouTube videos but often the person is making a specific project. I just want to learn to get comfortable with all the buttons and features. I have used it on some projects and think it does save paper but just want to learn to use this investment more.
I bought the Design Studio first and never could get it to work. I would start a project and would touch a key and everything would disappear. After MANY tries, I just gave up. I know OP can use but not me---
I have the G-and LOVE it-really great when making Christmas cards-since you can save the layouts-and go back to your file to cut more. My Gypsy made me use my Cricut more-LOVE IT!
I've had one for six months or so and I love it! It was totally worth the price. I use mine with my Design Studio. I like the larger screen area in Design Studio on my laptop for doing the basic layout. I dump the design to the Gypsy and do all my final tweaking there. When I'm ready, it's plug and cut. Awesome! I no longer have to tote my laptop to my Cricut and dig out a cartridge to get cutting.
It's great for on the go too. I frequently tuck it in my "field bag" of basic card making supplies. I'm looking forward to having it on hand when I'm sitting out watching my daughter practice T-Ball this spring.
I can't imagine using my cricut w/o the gypsy now! I didn't use it much at first, but once i learned the ropes, I love it. My BFF actually teaches gypsy classes, so I do have her to show me. I didn't hear that they "revamped" it, but I do know that they are moving more towards "digital" cartridges... I"m hoping they'll be cheaper as a download version (ie: smiley cards is digital only), and some they've retired you can download for free when you do your gyspy update. Good things are instore, and it gets better an better.
When I was at CHA last month I asked one of the guys who was working in the Provo Craft booth a couple of specific questions about the Gypsy. Specifically, if it was being phased out (as the prices have been dropping significantly lately) and about the prospect of them going "all digital" with the cartridges. First, he assured me that the Gypsy wasn't going ANYwhere and I didn't get the feeling that they were planning on upgrading it any time soon (they would've had a prototype to show if it was going to be changing any time in the next six months). Second, he said that they were not planning on going digital with the carts, either. Since the retailers are their "bread and butter", he said it would make them made (to be cut out of the middle), and they had to keep them happy. I (half) jokingly said, "What about the consumer?? Don't you wanna keep US happy???" He just smiled at me and didn't say anything much. All that said ... I absolutely LOVE my Gypsy. Use my Cricut SOOOO much more now that I have one, and couldn't imagine EVER going back to using my Cricut without one.
On a side note ... they DID have a sample of the NEW Expression machine in the booth to show off. The Expression 2 ... you can use both regular and Imagine cartridges in it (though it doesn't print like the Imagine), and the screen is SOOO much bigger and has a lot of cool, new features. Can't even THINK about going there .... yet ... :S
