Default Gamsol replacement

What can I use instead of Gamsol and where can I find it? I looked in the acrylic aisle at Michaels, but only saw turpentine and brush cleaners. What is it called and where in Hobby Lobby or Michaels would I find it?
I've ordered Gamsol from Inky Antics, but I've heard it may take a week or two to get here. My Prismas and stubs are just calling to me!

You want a product called odorless mineral spirits. There are many brand names, Gamsol is only one. If you found turpentine, you were probably close! The bottle I have does not even say odorless mineral spirits, it says odorless brush cleaner. At Michael's, I found it in the aisle with the oil paints, right next to the turpentine. Odorless mineral spirits is a more refined (less stinky!) version of turpentine. It can also be used to thin oil paint, strip away grease and clean oil paint from brushes.

I bought Turpenoid at Hobby Lobby today. It is an orderless turpentine substitute so the bottle says. They had 3 different sizes and it was in the same place as the Copic markers, watercolor pencils, etc.

turpenoid is usually the product of choice for professional coloured pencil artists. Some use the orange oil citrus thinners.

...they are all equally hazardous, whether they stink a little or a lot the fumes and the flammability are still there so use them with caution.

I found the odorless mineral spirits in the artist aisle at Michael's under the name of Mono Lisa.

Has anyone tried baby oil? I read about it somewhere... haven't had a chance to try it out. Maybe tonight's the night!

I just tried doing some of the baby oil...it did blend it. I am a novice when it comes to using prismacolors and blending with stumps, and have a LONG way to go before my images look like those done by the 'pros.' I want to read more about the baby oil as I don't want to use gamsol or odorless mineral spirits while nursing my baby. There's a pen made by National that some people use too. I have tried that, but tonight found that the baby oil 'moved' the colors a lot easier.

Good to know, Katie! I have 2 little boys and don't want to use gamsol around them. I craft in the family room, which is where they play and it's hard to get good ventilation in there. OK... I really need to get off this board and try out the baby oil.

In my experience baby oil or Mona Lisa odorless mineral spirits give similar effects...paper is the KEY for me...some cardstock just doesn't allow you to move the color around. Georgia Pacific white cardstock from Walmart works great.

The Mona Lisa bottle at Michaels is about 6 x 4 and is white plastic with a picture of Mona Lisa on the front. It was at about knee to thigh level at my Michaels. I posted on another thread that I purchased a dauber bottle at Michaels too. It is an awesome little thing for only $3.50. Clear bottle with a sponge at the top. You fill it with the OMS, put on the top, turn upside down and depress the sponge on a non-porous surface to charge it up with the OMS. It is a great little thing, controls the evaporation and is spill proof. I use it in the car when I travel. Have a lapboard with velcro at the top edge. One spot for the OMS dauber bottle, one for my stump cup, and one for the juice can that hold the pencils for my current project.

If any of you travel and color, I also had purchased a leather pencil case that is really awesome! Got it at dickblick.com. Reasonably priced too.

I bought my odorless Mineral Spirits at Menard's (similar to Home depot or Lowe's) and I got mine for a little over $3 for a pretty big container of it.

I am curious- what is Gamsol? I have seen references to it before but have never used it.

Odorless Mineral Spirits. The Gamsol brand is rated one of the highest for safety ratings. Mona Lisa Odorless Mineral Spirits works too.

Baby oil, while seeming that it might work good to move the colored pencil, does not "evaporate" fast on the paper like mineral spirits do, it just keeps spreading into the fibers. It would be like handling your paper with greasy fingers- you know how those would tend to stain or mark the paper for an eternity? You are likely to end up with a "halo" around your blended art work.

Yes, I noticed that. Is there any way to avoid this? Other than not using baby oil, that is. I've only tried it on one kind of paper...need to try my other white papers, but really don't like the 'halo' effect, as you put it.

I use lots of different papers. You can use watercolor but I don't prefer it. I use the Expedex 80 lb bright white paper that I get at my local Arvey's paper store. It has a good tooth to catch the color but not too much to make blending hard. I have tried it on the cream colored paper that has little flecks and small hairs of green in it and it was a lot harder to use because the tooth was a little too much.
