Cuttlebug stuff on ebay
Just curious if anyone can help me understand how people can sell the CB stuff on ebay for so cheap? I'm hearing of alphabets for $20? And I looked tonight for a flower die that I've been going to two Michael's for about 3+ weeks now trying to find....and it was a Buy It Now for $6.49 with FREE shipping!!! How can this be? Where are the people getting these items from? I know our local Michael's has a guy that is stealing the Cuttlebug and Cricut stuff to sell on ebay....and now I feel like buying one of these items could just be funding a crook. NOT taking the moral high-ground here at all....just trying to understand WHERE this stuff could be coming from??
Probably the same way SU stuff ends up there. I think dishonest people can always find a way to cheat the system.

How is selling cuttlebug stuff dishonest? Maybe the seller has a store or works in one that got them. If it's selling a lot below retail they may get it at a wholesale price, mark it up a little and that's it. Nothing dishonest. One of my friends has a tax ID so she buys flowers wholesale and makes arrangements to sell at craft fairs. I think you can buy from the manufactures if you just have a business license and a tax ID, I went to craft classes in someone's house and she had Bazzill c/s that she had bought direct, there was just a minimum order for her. Since she used the space over her garage I was able to buy the c/s from her cheaper than the LSS but she still made something.
I am thinking it would be someone from a craft store using some type of employee discount to buy the stuff cheap and then sell high. Then there is always those people that will magically find something in their pockets when they get home from a craft store - steal it for free and then sell. I think that many stores have started locking up there high priced item such as the alphas etc...
I have worked in retail and seen all sorts of stealing - a minister stealing cigars, ladies stealing watermelons or turkeys(one hiding it in between her legs, another one under her shirt - don't know about you, but I do not think I could handle a watermelon 'tween the legs and walk or run and the turkey - too cold!, a man stealing a family pack of steaks while I can plainly see the outline of the package in his coat (the police caught him!), hiding medicines and heatlh and beauty aids in baby seats, someone coming into a store (at the mall) and grabbing everything on a hanging bar of clothing running out, someone trying on shoes and deciding to put their old shoes in the box and back on the shelf and walk out with new shoes on their feet, a beer rep who called on the store and stole cigarettes.
Oh the stories I can tell after working retail!

Have to add that I do think there are legitimate people out there doing Ebay as a business (like the person the 2nd posting talked about with having a tax id #) or just to sell some things to make some money. And I do think most people are selling things legitimately, but there is always a few dishonest ones that try to beat the system. I did not mean to make it sould like all Ebayer's are stealing cuttlebug stuff to sell, jsut that there is always a few dishonest ones.

Dunno! But I bought that very die for that very price on the 'bay today, with the free shipping. Couldn't find it anywhere!
I sell Toys on eBay and buy from the toy companies that I sell. I have a tax ID and I know a few either sellers on eBay that also do it legally. There are a few companies that will not sell to a store that does not have a store front though. I also think that there is a lot of little stores that use eBay for a second source of customers. Just be smart when shopping on eBay, check feedback, see how long they have had an account and so on.
I will add that the prices that the alphas are going for.....how can you *not* think that they are stolen???? Normally 89.99 in Joann's. and a BIN for 28.95??
That's just my pessimistic cop's wife thinking though:rolleyes:
I agree tha if it is less than half the price of a store on "buy it now" than they probably paid nothing for it. DOn't forget the "missing shipments" of things. There is a lot of shrinkage in shipping and recieving. Whole cases of things turn up missing.

I know a lot of people buy wholesale and then sell on E-bay in smaller increments...all you need is a Tax ID and a business name...
But buyer beware if a deal sounds too good to be true...I could see a Cuttlebug Alpha or a Cricut cartridge going for about 1/2 price on the Bay but any lower than that I would say I would be cautious...

I read the info on becoming a wholesaler for Cricut & Cuttlebug. The information specifically stated that you are not allowed to sell at on-line auction sites. If this is true, then some of these stores must be doing something dishonest.

There are legit places that buy from provo craft and resale at a slightly higher than wholesale price (46% off compared to 50% off) to legit business owners with tax id's (a small time seller even with a website can't buy from provo craft directly) and website storefronts. (not ebay storefronts). I buy from such a place, but I don't sell the stuff I buy from them on ebay, although I don't know if they have such a rule. I had to show a real website to them before I could buy from them. Even at wholesale prices, the cuttlebug stuff is 1/2 the retail price. So, I can't figure out how such sellers can sell this stuff at less than wholesale. If an ebay seller chooses to sell auction style, then they take their chances on selling it for what it cost them, but a buy it now for less than 1/2 price, or less than wholesale, I just don't know. I would sure like to know how they do it.

I was on ebay last night and ALMOST did a Buy it Now for the flower dies I want. The person is a power seller, with 99.8% positive feedback. So I'm convinced the transaction would go through without any problems. I'm still just really baffled at the LOW prices and FREE shipping. As many of you have stated wholesale prices aren't even that good.
I noticed that several of the Buy It Nows were irregular items. For example, the dies I just bought are not straight on the square as they would be if you bought them in the store. No problem to me, but since they do look "off" on the front, some people might not buy them in a store. Many places sell off the irregulars, that work fine but look funny, and let others resale. It is disconcerting that peoples' first thoughts are always that someone is out to get them in this world.
Just wanted to share my experience of a positive eBay Cuttlebug purchase. I bought my Cuttlebug 'Olivia' alphabet on eBay from a US seller, it was an auction, not a Buy It Now.
I'm cautious and always check out a seller before bidding or buying, this seller has Powerseller status with nearly 8000 feedback with a 100% rating. The transaction was perfect, excellent communication and service and very fast international delivery. Don't forget, if you pay via PayPal, there is PayPal Buyer Protection if things do go wrong.
I won the alpha for just over $40 which may not seem a complete bargain to you US crafters - but here in the UK, Cuttlebug alphas cost around 50 - 65 ($100 - $130)
So I was delighted to get it for that price

Well this is something I hadn't even considered.........they they might be items that didn't pass *quality control*.
I agree it IS disconcerting that people's first thoughts are always that someone is out to get them in this world. And I would NEVER have even thought anything about this topic if it hadn't been for the knowledge I had from our local Michael's (them knowing some guy is stealing and selling on ebay). I wasn't so much worried someone was *out to get me*, but rather I personally didn't want to be funding and promoting a crook. I'm sure if I order from ebay that I would get my items without a problem.
I posted here on SCS because I was curious.........and I've gotten a lot of good information back that I wouldn't have known otherwise.......like your comment about things being irregular. SO.......thanks!!!

There is a lot of little Scrapbooking companies going out of business in my area and selling everything for 70% or more off just to get rid of it. So I can see them being sold for cheap if they got it cheap.
Just to add, an eBay Store with a buy it Now is not an auction, so if a store that has a retail store, decides to sell to sell online at an ebay store (to get the most buyers available), I don't think there is much they can do, it's not an auction.
I don't mind buying slightly irregular stuff. As long as it works the way it should, what's the difference? My digital camera that I love is a factory reconditioned model that I bought on eBay for about half the price of what a new one would have been. (That was about two or three years ago and it is still going strong.)

I worked at convention one year and one of the SU employees told me that they used to take the rubber from defective stamps to the dump. Til the dump reported that ladies were digging thru all the trash locating the stamps so they could then resell them on Ebay. That was a lot of years ago. SU now only shreds the rubber and donates it to schools for their playground padding. Some cheap stamps people bought on the Bay actually came from the junkyard. That is gross!
It is always possible that something you buy may be "hot" merchandise. Shortly after I got a new dress in a cute little shop here, I learned that the store was being closed down by the police because it contained stolen merchandise. Last year the Seattle police arrested a guy who had six warehouses full of "hot" stuff and he was a power seller on ebay.
I buy stuff like shoes and purses on ebay and I sometimes wonder about the sellers. On the other hand, I have friends who are ebay sellers and they are perfectly honest. I may be naive, but I believe that the majority of the people are ethical. There is not much one can do these days to preclude supporting a crook every now and then anyway. And, I should start by being more vigilant about my own integrity before I worry too much about others'.
I would tend to be skeptical if I saw an item on E-Bay for LESS than wholesale.
Look, no matter if you sell on the 'bay or in a storefront, you have to have a decent markup, or else you are not making any money. People go into business to MAKE money, and selling a $90 item for 25 or 30 dollars just sends up a red flag.
Yes, there are many, if not most, legit sellers on E-Bay, we just need to be careful.
I too worked retail and really saw a lot of theft like Tracy (tokane 4) saw.
I thought I would buy one of those die cuts off of eBay, knowing full well that it may be a hoax or that I would not even receive it. (I have always had great luck with everything I have bought from eBay which have been 50+ and counting)
Well I ordered "Provo Craft Cuttlebug Dies-Fancy Pants Alphabet NIP" for 29.99 and paid $5.00 shipping on March 11th and I still haven't received it yet. I have sent 3 emails in the coarse of the 18 days inquiring if it has shipped yet, with NO response. This seller has over 5000 feedbacks from positive buyers and has 99.6% positive feedback. This Seller also has a store with over 1500 items in it.
Now, the thing that is complained about the most from the buyers that left negative feedback was VERY SLOW SHIPPING. I am wondering if I should file a claim with Paypal or should I wait a month and see what happens.
Oh, was that from Margo Whatshernuts (obviously not her real name)? I bought an alpha from her, it shipped slowly but it at least got here, but the bugger never left me any feedback even after I left it for her. :P
I am not sure who you are talking about but search this number 330103480419 on ebay and you will see what I purchased. The seller is selling the same Item I bought and says she has 3 now. Pretty bad when you don't respond to questions though. I think I will wait a month before doing anything. I hope I get it soon.
I, too ordered a CB alphabet from Margo whositwhatever. No e-mail responses, no feedback to me from her. Basically, I got no communication at all! I left neutral feedback. It should have been negative. I will not buy from her again.
I think even if you are a power seller you should at least give good customer service!
I was wary also of buying CB items if it sounded too good to be true. But I ordered the CB flower die cut for $6.49 with free shipping. That is cheaper than I could get it at any of the stores with a 50% off coupon, plus no driving. So I thought I would give it a try, because it was a small amount of money. I did a buy in now and got an email thanking me for buying it, and later an email telling me it had shipped. I got it in two days, I think. That is fast, and shipping was free! If anyone is interested, here is a link to her Ebay store: http://stores.ebay.com/Oakhill-Trading-Post-Outlet
Her user id is Oakhill Trading Post and she has a lot of positive feedback. I have been thinking about buying alphabets from her, because they are around $28-$30 with free shipping. I am not affiliated with this seller in any way, just a happy customer.
Yup! I had a great experience with them, as well! Bought several dies that I couldn't find anywhere else for cheaper than retail and also got free shipping. I will be using them again!

Thanks, the next time I purchase I will go to that ebay store, lot of great deals on die cuts there.;)
I got a great deal on an auction for one of the alphabet dies for the cuttlebug. I got Red Tag Sale for 32.55 with free shipping. It came very quick and in perfect condition from a seller "Thrills". I haven't bought anymore because I can't help but think they must be stolen goods for them to sell them that cheap. I think its awful that it is that easy to sell possibly stolen merchandise.

Connie and others,
I have purchased LOTS of things from this buyer, and she is GREAT. Her shipping is super-fast and I've had no problems getting my items. I am a long-time eBayer (member since 1998!) and have found that usually I get exactly what I ordered and in a timely manner; however, with two different Cuttlebug purchases, I've had REALLY poor luck. One FINALLY gave me a refund after I went through PayPal's resolution process - and this is someone who sells TONS of Cuttlebug product. She was not responding a timely manner at all. The other seller is still trying to stiff me, and he is stiffing others, too. Not sure how that one will end up.
Anyway, most of the people on eBay are honest and are selling exactly what they claim. Some aren't. It's pretty much like the rest of life.
It came very quick and in perfect condition from a seller "Thrills".
Heya Pat, did your seller leave you feedback? I bought from a seller with a very similar name who did not leave any for me and have since become all about the feedback on eBay and will only buy from folks who will leave it.

No, I do not believe this seller left me feedback...
I just wanted to let you guys know that I finally received my cuttlebug alpha set. I emailed her 3 time and she finally responds that she had answered all my emails, not. Then she tells me that it came back damaged and that she had to wait for another one to come in. How dumb does she think I am, her feedback states "slow shipping"

Then you have the compulsive buyers who just have to buy something and then find they don't really like it and sell it on the bay. I just purchased some cuttlebug dies.....47 dies and 7 embossing folders for only $66!!! She doesn't really have many other things for sale (100% feedback) so I just think it was a compulsive thing!

I've ordered two alpha's on e-bay for $30 w/free shipping, both came fast and were in perfect condition.
Also, I don't know how true this is, but I read somewhere that there is a ProvoCraft warehouse by the manufacturing plant and you can get their stuff extremely cheep.... I don't know how cheep and how much you can buy, but some of the stuff on e-bay is probably coming from there.
